Thankyou for taking the time to read this.
Right down to the matter at hand. Yesterday I was working on my laptop, plugged in, but charging, about 40%, when all of a sudden it shuts down. I wasnt doing anything overly stressful, CPU's were each at about 50% load tops (Ubuntu 8.10, mysql, apache2, rythmbox, firefox, opera, some file browsers, pidgin).
My initial thought was that the power supply adapter had gone - thus it was draining whilst i worked and i hadnt noticed (since the connector is a little worn). I noticed that the little green light was blinking rapidly on it. However when I unplugged it from the laptop, it returned to its static green state.
I went to remove the HDD today as i had to get my work from it, so I thought I would try to start it up anyway. Nothing. Whilst removing the HDD i noticed an occasional clicking (3 little consecutive clicks to be precise, as if it were trying to start but just couldnt. This happened a few times, until I removed the battery, then it stopped. I can replicate this by turning it on and it will keep happening until I remove the battery.
Also I have gone inside, attempted to clean any dust off and cleaned the battery contacts, so it is unlikely to be anything like that.
I know its an old laptop these days and sometimes these things die, but this thing has been my baby. I learnt to code on this thing, I learnt Linux on this thing and I'm not giving it up without a fight. Any help would be greatly appreceated.
Thanks in advance - Professor Ducky

Bump - Please help!

check the prossesor it could be dead; if thats the case let me know i have a source for a T2600 for about $99 or less or a T2700 for about $300 also check the power circuite inside the lappy not the external power supply. also there was a battery recall for this model that as sony said may cause overheating and power circuite problems if your lappys battery falls into the recall go to the acer site and check your bettery there; if its indeed faulty or under recall the serial test will let you know and will give you the application for the new battery replacement and that may be a good clue that the power circuite inside your lappy may be faulty or damaged

Thankyou for the reply.
i do happen to have a IntelĀ® PentiumĀ® M Processor 725 handy from an old work laptop. I believe its the same socket type and if so, is there any reason as to why i couldnt use this as a replaement - or at least to narrow down the possibilities of faults with the system.
Thanks Again
Professor Ducky -
Read a bit more thoroughly and found that it isnt the same socket - jsut the same number of pins. Could I test the core duo chip in a core 2 duo based laptop, or is there a reason as to why this wouldnt work?
-
Back to the battery recall - Did you try powering on your laptop using just the AC adapter with the battery removed? When the battery goes bad (which happens frequently to the bad batch they are recalling) then your laptop may not turn on with the battery installed even on AC power.
-
if the prossesor its of the same socket type and the chipset its supported you know like if you have a intel chipset945 and the duo core and the core 2 duo uses the same chipset then you should be able to use it even if its a a different model type and good point markmgb about the battery yes you should do that and test it
-
Battery removed doesnt make a difference and the battery wasnt on the recall list. At least I'm narrowing possibilities now...
Ill have a chat with a friend of mine to see if he'll let me test the cpu on his laptop.
Ill let you all know what happens and when.
Thanks for all the support so far.
Professor Ducky -
keep us posted; i`m looking into it, it seams like a lot of ppl had the same problem the battery causes an overheat on the power circuite inside the lappy and this cause damage to it no biggie just replace the circuite and thats it at least this is what i found so far
-
How do I go about replacing the circuit - what would I need? Im not scared to get my hands dirty or anything, whats the worst that could happen - it gets more broken
.
Still no luck getting another laptop to test the processor in yet though.
Thanks for all the support so far everyone.
Professor Ducky -
well first you need to know exactly what the problem is, check the prossesor and memory modules in another lappy also check the power supply stop using that battery and go to acer and check if need to be replace under the recall
-
if you asked me, I would say it is system board or ac/plug caused on the mobo.
-
I Know its been a while since this happened, but its been a busy few weeks with moving house and all.
Ok so since last time I've tested the CPU (swapped in a core 2 duo) - no avail - same issue.
Ram - Still havn't tried this yet, but am getting some a new stick for my eee 901 and IIR the 5672 uses ddr2 400, so when I put the new stick into my EEE, ill try the old stick in the 5672.
Also it is not under the recall.
Still, as it stands, I'm fairly certain it is a power issue, so after I have tested the RAM, we go back djjbox of replacing the power circuit... but how do I do this? Any reference material you ould point me to please.
Thanks again for all the help so far and sorry about the massive delay. -
UPDATE: Tested the ram as well, no luck there, so there it is, whats the next step regarding replacing the circuit?
Thanks again.
Professor Ducky -
