Hi there,
I seem to be having problems with an Aspire 5610. Everytime I run CHKDSK, i get different errors, but the error that seems to always appear is that:
1) ntuser.dat.log isn´t valid.
2) system.log isn´t valid.
2) \SoftwareDistribution\DataStorage\Logs\tmp.edb has problems.
Does anyone have any ideas?

It seems that there are errors on your disk and to fix them, you need to run CHKDSK with options /F/ R

Hi there
Thanks for your reply. I´ve tried that it doesn´t make any difference! Sometimes it comes up with errors in the PREFETCH folder as well, incluiding errors with CHKDSK itself.
I´ve also tried system restore, SFC, defrag and nothing works!
Any more ideas?
Thanks -
I think your drive is dying. Have you tried running the HD manufacturer's utility?
-
I only bought the laptop last week! When I try to run the Acer restore facility, it says that it´s not installed on my system and I wasn´t given any CDs to reinstall windows.
-
Oh...Since it's on warranty, let the acer techs fix it for you
I think the HD is a lemon -
Can I take it back to MediaMarkt because I can´t find on their website a local address?
-
If it is under 30 days yes. Get it there a.s.a.p
-
Sorry for being such a pain...I just ran CHKDSK again and it said there were no problems, but if I do it again tomorrow for example it will appear with the same problems. Does this help anyone to solve it? I don´t kno if that means it´s not physically broken and it´s just a software problem? Plus, I can´t take it back to the shop in this state because if it doesn´t draw any problem when they test it, they´re going to think im crazy!

Have them refund you and get another lappy, say ASUS
-
I think it's normal to get file system errors in chkdsk if you run it on a mounted partition.
-
I don´t know what a mounted partition is, but I can tell you this:
It´s an 80GB HHD, split into two partitions (ACER & ACERDATA) and displayed as two drives in My Computer. It´s using FAT32 (NOT NTFS) and it always seems to display errors with SOFTWARE DISTRIBUTION, PREFETCH folders or TEMP files like: ntuser.dat.log, system.log, tmp.edb and sometimes Internet Explorer & CHKDSK itself (because they are open when I do the scan). -
Have you tried scheduling the scan before booting into windows?
-
The screen normally disppears so fast I don´t have time to see. I did it this time before it booted windows and it was OK, and run it again when Windows had loaded, and this is what I got: problems with the programs running?

Run it with option /f like this "chkdsk c: /f".
Then answer no on the first question where it offers you to unmount parition forcefully and yes on the second question where it offers you to schedule a run during next bootup. This does what bender suggests above, and I think it's a good idea as well. -
Try Milky's advice. If there's no error, then everything is fine. Also, it is perfectly normal to obtain errors on a mounted partition as windows have locked these files.
-
Hey guys,
Thanks for the help. Everytime is still the same - nothing has changed. Although it´s normal for errors, is it worth getting it changed? -
Do you know which hard disk is it? Seagate? Fujitsu? Hitachi?
I would run the HD utility from these manufacturers to be on the safe side. -
It´s an Hitachi, but I don´t know what type. And the OGT Diagnostic Tool is only for certain types http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#OGT
-
You need the DFT one
http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm#DFT
Download the cd image and burn it on a cdrw. Run the quick level test first, then the full scan. Warning: The full scan may take ages -
Anyway, if you still get errors in chkdsk with windows running, that's still normal. -
I run the scan for the next bootable session WITHOUT automatic fix, and it didn´t encounter any errors. Guess that´s a good sign? And I guess it makes more sense now that it´s because the disc is partitioned (or mounted somebody mentioned - I think that means the same?)...because it says in the images that I´ve put up that the files are invalid, NOT corrupted - and they´re temp files anyway...I suppose aswell because Windows is using them at the same time.
Thanks so much for your help guys. -
no problemo. glad you figured it out.

sbrown86: Right, it's because the files are in use that chkdsk gets confused.
Mounted means that the files on the partition is accessible from windows. It's common with laptops to have a hidden partition with recovery files on that cannot be accessed from windows (ie not mounted).
