I tried out the webcam and I am not used to the quality. Not sure if its just with the one I have or this is how the quality is. The webcam for the 1410 seems a little hazy. I'm not sure how to describe it. Foggy? Like when your watching a movie and when someone dreams they do that hazy effect to make it look like someone is dreaming?

Afaik, Vista's ePower Management works on Win7, too.

Install a virtual disk drive program that lets you mount a blank virtual disk and let the eRecovery write to it. Then you can move it to an other PC

    Great forum and thread.

Has anyone attempted to install internal bluetooth in a 1410 yet? If so, please advise of the module required.

    Thanks.

I've installed 64bit versions but I don't notice any difference. They control the same things that Win7 already does.

Yeah I just double checked the contact page and they're located in HK. I don't think it's OEM although it looks like it in the pics.

I've got my 1810T yesterday and so far i'm very pleased with it, except two things:
    1. The nervous fan behaviour with AC connected. I hope Acer will bring a BIOS-update for that. The silence in battery-mode is awesome.
    2. When the notebook is placed on a even surface (like a table) and the display is open, the forward right corner is hovering ~1-2mm above the ground. @The owners of a 1810T: Can you confirm this with your device?

Oh, one more thing which i haven't found in any review yet: The maximum opening angle for the display is quite generous. It is no problem to sit on a chair and work with the 1810T on the legs, even for tall people.

A regular person does not need to know ;)

Virtualization technology is useful for running the Windows XP mode in Windows 7. It simulates an actual system in the OS.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_machine

PS. I don't expect any 1410/1810 in white.

    I would try Alcohol 120%
I haven't done it myself, yet. So you have to find out yourself how to do it.

    @icefiresr
I did some more research and so far I didn't find a virtual DVD burner that is compatible with Acer eRecovery. People are just reporting problems without a definitive solution.

I would just create an ISO of the recovery partition and save it somewhere as a backup. I doubt that you will go back to Vista anyway.

    Edit:
I've found a solution, but it's in German. Don't ask me to translate it, I didn't use Virtual CD V.9 and so I don't know the options. I might try this when I get my 1810tz and post a howto if anyone cares.

isn't alcohol 120 freeware these days. if not can your recommend a freeware program.

what program is used to make an iso disc. is it the same as ones you use to make backup discs like Nero.

Personally I use Ultra ISO test version for creating ISOs, it supports many formats(also compressed formats). I use daemon tools lite as virtual drive. I haven't used Alcohol 120% for a while.

    Thanks :D

Yes I posted earlier in this thread about the mediocre webcam/mic quality. I get that "haziness", looks like a bright white Photoshop "soft glow" effect. I think it's compensating for low lighting, seeing as the sticker by the webcam says "Webcam optimized for low-lighting".

TBH the mic just sounds bad. Skype always tells me I have a lot of background noise, too.

http://www.virtualcd-online.com/ is the English page where you can get the 30-day trial of Virtual CD 9. I haven't burned the ISO's to DVD and tried to boot from them, but that program did create them just fine.

Basic process: I installed VirtualCD, set up a "virtual burner" drive, then selected the "create and insert blank medium" option in Virtual CD and selected "ISO DVD+R". Then I ran Acer eRecovery wizard. When it asked for another blank disk, I did "create and insert" again (in VirtualCD) and put another "ISO DVD+R". Same thing for the third (application/drivers) recovery option. At the end, I have 3 ISO's that appear to be the same size as the DVDs I burned using a friend's external drive. I can test them sometime in the near future and let you all know i f they burned and/or booted successfully.

Me too, still waiting for delivery to my friend in the USA :) I will have this one 2 weeks later.

Can anybody, who has got one already, confirm that? What kind of RAM has got 1410 on it? 200 pin or 204 pin?

I wanna upgrade it for 4GB and 800 MHz if it is possible.

Mine from Amazon (USA) came with 1x2GB SODIMM PC2 533/DDR2 666 200 pin. I purchased a 2x2GB kit of same rating. I doubt DDR2 800 will yield any performance benefits. It should not be a problem though installing DDR2 800.

Running all default drivers in Windows 7, it's having issues with 1080p playback. I can't seem to dl the chipset/graphics drivers from Acer's site, plus I'm thinking about going back to Vista since I'll need to for the 7 upgrade anyways.

    I put in a stick of 1GB DDR2 667, it's running 3GB without a hitch. At some point, I will put dual channel 4GB DDR2 800 into it.

One user reported higher graphics scores in WEI with 800mhz ram (2x2GB). I don't know if that would be due to faster ram or going to 4GB. Having 800mhz ram might give you a better chance to overclock if you are wanting to to that. If I buy a 1410, I will buy a 2x2GB kit of PC2-6400 (800mhz). A matched pair is best if you want dual-channel ram access (faster).

Thanks Delvius. Hardcover is definitely ideal, but for travel within backpacks and stuff the Zeroshock should be adequate (I'm currently happily using it for my x200 :)). Is it a snug fit, or does the Acer have room to move around if the case is shaken?

Is there even a point to attempt 1080p on it? The resolution exceeds that of the screen and I doubt it's powerful enough to decode it. Unless you're outputting to a 1080p tv.

Try this for 1080p playback, worked for me although I had 4GB in mine. It shouldn't make a difference though:

I'm caring it around in a backpack, too, and because of that i want a hardcover for impacts :/... well maybe one day :). It has some room but it das not really move. It perfectly fits in the lenght and the height but not in the width. But I like it, I put a cleaning cloth there so it does not move anymore and I am able to clean it, but the AC adapter, which is pretty small, also fits in there.

There are two very good reasons, one of which you mentioned.

I have a number of 1080p movies. I do not want to re-encode them and have a 720p and a 1080p copy just so I can watch it on my laptop. It would be a waste of harddrive space to do so.

This laptop comes with an HDMI port. Clearly it was intended to be hooked up to an HDTV at some point. Being able to output 1080p to a 1080p TV is a huge plus. It becomes basically a portable HTPC at that point.

Has anyone found a solution to fixing the annoying fan rattle? It seems to be audible on AC power only, and the fan slows down a lot on battery power, but the rattle is still there, just barely audible on battery.

I saw someone mentioning SmartFan, but it sounds like the fan was installed incorrectly... has anyone opened this thing up and found a way to correct the fan by either adjusting the fan itself or correctly installing it?

    Thanks for any help!

Check the tweaks section (see signature) for a small Hardware MOD to quieten the fan. I'll search for the Smartfan info.

If you have usefull tips, post them in that thread, please.

thank for the reply. I just wanted to know if it was just the 1410 i had. even in normal daylight I still get the soft glow/haziness effect. Comparing the webcam from my gateway p7805 which has a 1.3mp webcam the image quality is not the same. the gateway is sharper and does not have that soft glow effect. I haven't had a chance to test out the mic yet.

    can anyone else pitch in?

    Thanks

I picked up the Caselogic Netbook Attache with handles at Microcenter #753186 for $19.99. its snug but fits nice. There is also a pocket that holds a $6.99 travel mouse and my AT&T Tilt just fine.

quick question. I want to try out the windows 7 on the 1410. Made a restore file from windows backup and restore center. does that allow me to revert back to vista? and also do we need to be at our vista when the windows 7 upgrade comes in october?

You should create the full set of recovery DVDs with Acer eRecovery(see tweaks section if you don't have an external DVD drive).
I don't know if you must have installed Vista to do the upgrade, though.

What they are going to send you is an UPGRADE disk. It won't work unless you have the Vista installed. You can't do a clean install with an upgrade disk, it's designed to upgrade the SAME EDITION of Vista that came with your machine.

It will also probably be altered to look at your BIOS to make sure it's an Acer 1410 and it may check serial number too.

That's not entirely true. In Europe it is possible (and actually expected) that the Windows 7 Upgrade is a full version of Windows 7.

If that's true then you actually could do a clean install and if it's true then they shouldn't call it an upgrade disk. But it still may be designed to only install on the brand/model you have. I'm guessing it's an OEM version that would choke on another brand laptop. Just have to wait and see what they send. I'm going to install Ultimate anyway so it doesn't really matter to me. I like the "Bitlocker to Go" feature that comes with Ultimate. Also, I think you have to have either Ultimate or Professional to use the "XP Mode" virtualization. Thankfully, the SU3500 includes VT or the XP Mode wouldn't work.
