Oops right I meant UL30. UL20 and UL30 are both 1.5kg. At the same weight, I prefer more screen.

I'm on Win7 and on Win7 x86 Smartfan ran great. After reading in this thread that x64 is better, I reinstallled Win7 x64 and now smartfan gives an errormessage "couldn't access acer embedded controller" or something like that.
Remember something needs to be patched an I'll look into this when I have more time.
But about setting the cooling profile to passive; do you mean at "on AC power"? In my "balanced" plan the cooling profile on battery power was already set to passive.
I also installed 2x2Gb GEIL dual channel 800mhz. Chrome tabs definitely are faster and I also got a 0.3 improvement on memory performance at experience index.
Memory appears to be working good, however I did have a out of the blue black screen/nothing responds anymore even the power button. Had to unplug battey, boot from AC only and after this everything worked fine. Haven't had a problem since (24 hours of operation since error).
I'll upgrade the BIOS to 3113 (didn't do that yet).
About the graphics driver; with the standard Win7 driver, I get no black screens with UAC messagesboxes. With the newest intel driver (on x86 that was) I did get these black screens, so I haven't updated the driver on this x64 install yet. Is this recommendable, even with the black screen timeouts?
I also installed the Vista x64 Acer Powermanagement software and battery life (although I haven't conducted any tests) seem to have improved. Don't see anything from the powermanagement software install, except for the greenleaf icon when plugging in AC/unplugging AC. -

Thanks a million for confirming this. -
A shame you are having trouble. I find the computer superb. I did add 2X2 2gb of 800 MHz ram (Kingston hyperx) and a 128gb Runcore Pro IV ssd with a clean install of W7 RC (build 7100). I find this configurations runs every application that I need as quickly as my year old Dell XLS One. I hope you get a working replacement because the 1410 is very good.

will this support 8 gigs of ram ?

Hey Guys
I'm currently installing Vista 32 on a friends 1810TZ. All is well except for the wireless driver. It accepts any Intel 5100 driver but does beforehand warn that the driver maybe incorrect. Then wireless switch on the front fails to turn on (it doesnt light up or anything) and obviously, no networks are found.
I have also tried the atheros drivers from the acer site which failed miserably. The Intel Pro diagnostics utility does sometimes say the wireless is ON but still cant find any networks in range (There are about 10 where I live).
Any ideas? Have Acer shipped a different WiFi in TZ? Is it related to the switch (maybe faulty)? Sadly the notebook came with NO driver CD, which i was very surprised at...
Thanks in Advance...

yes it supports 8gbs of ram chipset does it says so in everest utility

As an Asus fanboy (I've been a fan since I joined the forums...three years ago? Time flies...) I really like the UL30, and I'd take it over a 3810 if I were to make that decision, but I really needed something smaller. $779 MSRP in the US, so it's not a particularly great deal, but the SU7300's extra power + Asus build/reliability would make it worth it. -
.4 of an inch make a screen go from "sweet spot" to "too big" ?? -
If that is brushed aluminum , the Asus UL20 might have just replaced this notebbok as my favorite.
-
Here's the exception - most standard 12" notebooks have similar chassis dimensions to 13"ers, and most 11" notebooks/netbooks have similar chassis dimensions to 10" netbooks (*note: 12" ultraportables and netbooks with shrink-wrapped dimensions don't count, they're similarly sized to the 11.6"ers. However, those 12" ultraportables are a dying breed, since 11.6" panels are cheaper to produce.). 15" and 16" notebooks have similar chassis dimensions, 17" and 18", etc. 14" is kind of a unique screen size that was all the rage maybe 2-3 years ago but has lost popularity in favor of more 13" thin and lights and 15" mainstream notebooks. 12" too, has started to die off, in favor of thinner 13"ers (UL30 and 3810) and smaller 10/11" netbooks/budget ultraportables like the 1410.
Sorry for the dissertation, just felt like I should respond. I've been here on the boards too long for my own good. -

I'll just play around a bit more with Vista and 2GB single channel to get a better feeling for the system to notice the improvement better when installing fast dual channel RAM later.

Someone on here mentioned that they ordered the bigger battery from an Australian site but since this thread is SO huge I can't seem to find the reference now. I did find the battery at http://www.cheap-laptop-batteries.com but I don't know whether to order. It looks like I can get 5600 mah for a little over $90 shipped.
If someone has gotten the 5600 mah battery and it works please let me know where you ordered if from. -
Just bought one today! Getting it on Tuesday. I read probably half the pages in this thread to help make my decision. Thanks guys
I'll report back when I get it.

Btw, some more facts/impressions.
The HDD is the most silent I've ever owned.
Quanta seems to use several clock generators. Phil and Cusem got an slg8sp513v, I got an ics9lprs365bglf.
Edit:
I recommend this eBay seller for people from Germany:
http://stores.shop.ebay.de/ks-pc-ha...Z2QQ_sidZ186585403QQ_trksidZp4634Q2ec0Q2em322
493,95€, free shipping.
You get 1 month "Widerrufsrecht" and that shop is extremely fast. My 1810t came in a huge box with tons of padding material. -
Is somebody able to confirm that under Windows 7 (with ac adapter plugged in!) setting the cooling profile to "passive" makes the fan running as silent as in battery mode?
-
Are you guys getting near that 8 hour claimed battery life? - Sorry this is for those with the 1810T. 1410 comments also welcome
-
I'm hitting 6 hours with ease. Since I'm not using it as my primary laptop, I've gone days without charging it...though, now it's connected to my 1080p LCD as the perfect little HTPC unit, so its on AC fully.
-
Btw, can anyone recommend a good monitoring program for checking momentary power consumption? -
Battery Bar is a pretty good one, which I've been using on my primary Asus for quite some time. Haven't put it on the Acer yet.
-
Someone else mentioned that already in this thread. -
Interesting thing, the Aspire Timeline 1810T is disappearing from the shops around here. It was only available for like two weeks.
Only to be replaced with the 1810TZ, SU4100 modell with a larger harddrive (320Gigs) as well. Our regional Acer site lists the TZ modell, only! Official markings: AS1810TZ-413G32 N, Part Number LX.PJ30X.015
This might be an indication for things to come in other regions. -
Thanks AcerTLhunter
Here in the UK the 1810TZ is the only one listed on websites (with an approx 21 Sept release). I don't think I've seen the 1810 anywhere. -
-
I'll have to ditch mine to get a TZ instead
Luckily I got this from my employer
-
That is why I asked to confirm the fan behavior under "passive" mode. The person, who claimed that "passive" mode would help, didn't exlain the effect of this mode in detail. And there was another user that said it wouldn't help at all. That is conflicting. So there no precise information...

Btw, I expect a successful overclocking to be of good use for graphics performance. Overclocking memory should add quite a bit to its dual channel throughput. -
I have the final version of windows 7 (not RC), though, if this makes any difference. -
I've got GEIL 2x2Gb 800mhz in a dual channel kit.
Model 352G16n, manu. date 2009/08/02 came with 3108 preinstalled.
This morning I updated to 3113 via the insideflashx64 application. Yesterday night I set the machine to hibernate, but apparently it froze, so I figured, let's just install the 3113 BIOS. Maybe it has better support for my DDR.
Nothing but failure since.
Boot 1 - Win7 boots fine -> Blue screen after 20 seconds of login
Boot 2 - Entering Setup -> Flash ok (bios ver. 3113) -> Disabled D2D recovery (deleted Acer partition) -> System hangs during bootup
Boot 3 - A lot of fiddeling around with disconnecting battery / booting on AC only / booting on battery only without AC / etc. etc. I finally got the 1810T booting up again. -> Went for a smoke, came back, black screen / no response to input.
Boot 4 - Black screen again. -> Writing this post.
I'll first try reinstalling the 2Gb SODIMM that came with the 1810T and if this doesn't work... Is it possible to downgrade BIOS versions?
I actually am getting pretty annoyed with little things (however this isn't that little) not working with acer notebooks/netbooks. My previous A150bw would often freeze while hibernating. Not being able to boot up and having to remove the battery etc. etc. Little things like this annoy me. However the pricing of the Acer's are great. -
-
Ok, so removed the GEIL 2x2Gb 800mhz SODIMMS and put the factory Samsung 2Gb 667mhz SODIMM back in and now everything seems to be running fine again (15 minutes of operation though).
Apparently I'll be returning these SODIMMS as well. Never would expected RAM to be so important (branding etc.). Anybody got other dual channel kits working (I know of the corsair 800mhz)? -
@Cusem
Combining all info I suspect your second RAM slot to be faulty.
I'd remove the module from the slot the stock RAM was plugged in and let the device run on the second slot alone. If the problem persists, return it under warranty.
Edit:
Better take the stock RAM and put it in the second slot to test. -
Cusem, maybe you should run a memtest on that memory and see if you get any errors. I posted directions about running memtest from a usb flash drive/sd card in the driver thread if you are interested in trying it.
-
The 1810t will have an emergency shutdown circuitry to shut off when overheating.
The funny thing is, that I disabled the fan and tested temperatures in passive mode and it handles it quite well. The 1810t is extremely efficient. Power consumption ranges from 5.5W(idle) to 12.4W(@100% CPU) in balanced mode with backlight @medium.
Edit:
It goes down to 5W when there is no HDD access. I will have to try EWF later. -
Hope I don't have to return it for warranty. Figure they're gonna be difficult with the recovery partition gone and the laptop being opened (only RAM and HD slots though, not the complete notebook). AND on top of that, don't want to experience a long painful warranty procedure. -
Under Windows 7 on my 1810 the consumption gets not under ~8,5W (Idle, Backlight@low, WLAN on).
And whats EWF? -
@TruEco
It's including Wlan in battery mode.
EWF is Enhanced Write Filter. It buffers HDD writes to RAM.
Btw, I've found out that battery saving mode doesn't make much of a difference in power consumption. Balance mode is best because it provides the best on demand performance when needed and saves as much when idle as battery saving mode. -
Today I took a closer look at the current BIOS, to solve my external DVD writer issue, but discovered that I have the latest BIOS installed.
I have some questions concerning the pre-installed software:
>> GridVista - Looks like it can go, or is there any use to that?
>> Intel Matrix Storage - Not sure if that one can be uninstalled. Does it contribute to the power management of the harddrive. The Storage manager gives me some info about the HD, but I see no further use of that tool.
>> MyWinLocker - OK, it is an encryption tool, but I should have it off my back when disabling it in the autorun/registry autostart if I might keep it for later use?
When I connected the notebook with a HDMI cable to my flatscreen, the TV didn't blow up the picture to full screen size. Instead, it was centered and had a big black border around the notebook desktop. Do I need to chnage some setting here I could not find?
Yeah, you have got to help a newbie here...
PS: http://img248.imageshack.us/i/belkin12sleevefor1810t.jpg/
That's the link to the Belkin sleeve & my Styrofoam modification for a tight fit. -
I have this 1410 for about 2 weeks. I just noticed the speakers do not work any more. They were working in the first week as I have play a few movie clip to test the performance.
The problem now is that speakers do not work but headphone work. Also, I notice there was a red led inside the headphone jack on all the time. If I plug in headphone and then un-plug, the speakers will be on for 1-2 second and then shut off automatically. So, I know the speakers are ok. I have made sure that sound is not muted and speakers are selected as default audio playback device. I suspect the notebook thinks it is still in "headphone" mode as the red LED inside the headphone jack on all the time.
Can someone confirm whether you see red LED inside your headphone jack on while you speakers are on? -
@TrueEco and V1810T
I recommend to both of you to install latest graphics card drivers from here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpost.php?p=5282491&postcount=33
They work in both Vista and Win7.
TrueEco, go to graphics settings panel and go to the energy saving settings, push the slider to the topmost setting and click apply. It dropped my 1810t's idle power consumption to 4,8W
Edit: Changing the Wifi card's energy saving setting in the driver control panel might help too.
V1810T, keep the first two programs. Ive uninstalled that encryption tool because I don't need it. -

Hey Ho!
I am also looking for a good transportable and for its size good performant Net/Notebook and I was really suprised the Samsung n510 has a Non-Glossy-Display. This is really important for me. I would buy it if it has the new ULV-CPUS instead of the old Atom 270. That would be the perfect Netbook. So I searched for a better netbok in same Pricerange and google took me here to this big Thread.
I was searching for someone who has put a Non-Glossy-Foil over the screen and was spreading his/her experience with it. But noone has made such thing.
Is there someone , from the 1810/1410t owners who has put such a foil on the screen to reduce or eliminate extreme glare reflections?!
The Glare-Story is the only thing which is holding me away from a purchase.
Ive compared my Znote 6224W (Non-Glare) with an Acer Netbook incl. Glare-Display and I would really stick with a Non-Glare onwards.
Thank you very much in advance for answering me this question.
Greetz from da good old germany!
