Mine also had the same issue- and was utterly annoying- thank goodness I came up with an easy fix that doesn't involve screwdrivers. PM me and I'll let you know how to do it.

What's the big secret?
-
My 1810t is great. Does what it has to do for me and apparently also for the the other people with a hundred replies. These people contributed to lot of perspective and it is your own decision to buy or wait. Once I had the decision to buy a AT286 with 640Kb, 12Mhz and 10MB disk or to wait 3 months for the release of a 386sx, 16Mhz. But I bought the 1st one due to future expandable features (haha). Anyways the 286 served my needs very well, so my 1810t does now.

It is called an RMA.

I just tried to send you a PM, but your profile is set to block PMs- can you post it here? I'm sure we'd all benefit from hearing it.

Any updates on the Free Windows 7 Upgrade Discs?
Checked my order status, but no shipping info or anything.

I also agree. Up until a few months ago, my everyday computer was a 4-year old Compaq laptop. The 1410 actually plays games & videos much better than the Compaq ever did, so in that sense it works perfectly well as a "desktop replacement." However, I also recently bought a new desktop- a budget, reconditioned Dell, to which I added a low-end graphics card (Nvidia 9600GT). I really only play 1 computer game- The Lord of the Rings Online (an MMORPG similar to Warcraft, for those of you unfamiliar with it). My old Compaq defaulted to "Very Low" graphics -the lowest setting in the game. My new desktop defaults to "Very High" - the second highest setting. The 1410 defaults to "medium". I find this perfectly acceptable, and it's exactly what I was hoping for from a netbook.
Keep in mind, though, that this is straight out of the box - I haven't uninstalled any bloatware, and it still has the original 2 GB of RAM. -
ok got my 1410 su2300 now... upgraded bios to 3120... win7x64 numbers are 3.9 4.8 3.3 3.2 5.5
not bad...
is this the forum?? or is it the 1810t one??
im gonna post in both till someone clarifies!! -
Congratulations, sosorio
Technically it should be in the other thread, if the split is appreciated that is. Personally I don't think the split is a good idea like I already said. -
But isn't his notebook a 1410?
-
PatrickVogeli Notebook Consultant
Hi there!
Seems you have PM disabled. Could say how you did this? My 1810tz also has this problem, and it's a little annoying and a bit dissapointing. -
lol
Yep, this proves how the split complicates things
-
As I stated before, none of us knew that Acer was putting a dual core in the 1410 at the time of the split. So please accept my apologies.
Still, this thread is too long to be of much use. What good is information on the new models if it's buried somewhere in the middle of a 3000+ post thread? I think a split makes sense but the way it turned out, wasn't exactly the way I had planned. -
Good news on the SU3500!
I decided to download a few HQ videos and saved them as HQ mp4 files (using flash downloader for firefox). Then, using VLC (a lightweight media player) I was able to play these in full screen mode with great results. They played smooth and looked crisp. I even played a while I was in the process of downloading two other videos and had about 10 tabs open in Firefox.
This makes me happy.

On a fresh Win7 install using the Win7 drivers and windows update drivers 1810T with the su7300 is showing:
4.1, 4.7, 3.3, 4.8, 5.5
I'm sure the increased video scores are from newer intel drives that came down with windows updates.

finally....
my dual channel 2x2gb@800MHz ram upgrade is operational, great!
thanks, d-m. -
FYI, I received my Windows 7 Free Upgrade discs today. I'm not sure who else has there's by now, but they have shipped. Although therre is no email ship confirmation.
-
Its really quite simple..
1410 & 1810 series Single Core
1410 & 1810 series Dual Core
The big confusion is the current name of the new Dual Core thread.
" Acer Aspire 1810TZ ~Timeline (dual core) 11.6" Thread"
It should be renamed to.....
" Acer Aspire 1410 and 1810 ~Timeline (dual core) 11.6" Thread"
The opening messages at each thread should specify the CPUs
If your computer has a Single Core... Intel 723, 743, SU3500, then...
If your computer has a Dual Core... Intel SU2300, SU4100, SU7300, then...
(not sure about the 723 & 743, actually)
If you don't know what CPU you have, right click on "My Computer" for Properties. -
Why not lock the single core thread and continue the complete discussion in the dual core thread? Most of the subjects discussed aren't processor specific so the fact that people spend time asking themselves in which thread to post is kind of ridiculous if you ask me.
@ohiomoto
Tbh, I wonder why you are having problems playing HQ in the browser. HD is one thing, but HQ is smooth as silk windowed or full screen on my su3500. -
Good point..
Seems like the rate of postings here has dropped recently.
But I still check daily.
Don't want to miss anything.
-
I bet most are reading both, I know I am and I see a lot of u guy/girls are posting in both... I just cant get enough on the 1410/1810 series. looking to see some hard data now that units are being shipped. 1410/2300 or 1810/7300 ???
-
I'm still waiting for mine. How did they ship it?
-
Maybe it's Ubuntu/Firefox/Chrome. Probably crappy codecs. I don't know. I tried a few videos in Vista and they seem to play a little better, but still not perfect in full screen. I'm not an expert in these areas and it's not a big deal because most of my youtube use is just for background music.
I don't spend a lot of time on my OS. I like to try different ones out, but I'm not much for messing around with them. Maybe I need to tweak stuff, but I'm not into spending a lot of time learning how to do it. I'm lazy!
-
agreed!! this sounds great
-
I changed the title on the dual core thread, but wont show up. I think a mod needs to do it.
-
Correct. Thread title changed.
-
Thanks. Hopefully that will help.
-
Bummer, I didn't get my Windows 7 upgrade disc after all. The wife checked the mail today and we got a Quicken 2010 upgrade disc that said Windows 7 on it, so she thought it was my Windows 7 package. :-( (Thanks wife!)
Sorry for getting anyones hopes up.
I'm still waiting on my shipment too I guess. -
Thanks ohioMoto.
The name change will especially help the 1410/Su2300 folks. -
Correct. Me neither cant get enough. These are epic threads.
-
Just got my 1410 with the SU3500 processor and Vista. First hour of use the CPU was pegged installing junk software from acer and windows updates. I think that even McAffey running on it will use a lot of CPU resources, so I uninstalled it along with most of the other software put on there by acer (even Google desktop was installed!).
Once I got windows configured so the CPU would sit idle, the laptop became very snappy and had no trouble playing HD WMA files, HD flash, etc. I have the HDHomeRun on my wireless N network and over the air 1080 HD programming played perfectly smoothly in Windows Media Center (no cables attached). It barely gets warm, even after watching a couple of hours of HD TV on it (CPU was around 75% while doing this).
I'm very happy with the performance.
I don't like the European keyboard layout or the trackpad (too small). I'm not seeing any warping or flex. Everything looks straight and clean. Only issues are the ACER 1410 sticker on the monitor was coming off and was a little bent, the little rubber screw cover next to it is missing, and the genuine windows sticker and serial # labels on the bottom were peeling a little, so I have to keep pushing them flush and hopefully they'll stay stick.
I ordered the free Windows 7 upgrade from ACER, so that will be interesting to try when it comes. -
Yes, epic thread!
BTW, I just spent a couple hours in downtown Taipei.
The Toshiba 11.6" Satellite T110 is on display everywhere,
but with the very slow Intel single-core SU2700 cpu.
Nice machine, thin and light-weight.
Doesn't at all feel like an old-school Toshiba.
Much more like the 1810. -
Hi. I've been looking at these for a while. I have a few questions. Has anyone seen a comparison of the SU2300 to the SU4100 or SU7300 other than the passmark scores?
And more importantly, has anyone tried the directv2pc software with these? I have been able to get an older version running on my atom netbook, but it can't handle the HD shows. The newer versions of the software promise gpu acceleration, but it doesn't look like the intel GMA 4500MHD graphics card is supported. I was wondering if the cpu power alone would be sufficient to play back HD shows. Of course, you would need to have a DirecTV HD DVR to test this. The software is here.
Thanks,

You may want to look in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=424213
There are a few members who have the new units in there. -
Based on the output from HWiNFO32 as posted by 1810T and 1810TZ owners a I put together a comparison of the differences between the SU7300 & SU4100 here. I haven't seen anyone post the HWiNFO32 output for the SU2300 yet, so I'm not sure how it compares.

Two questions: did anyone try 1920*1200 through HDMI?
Is there a smaller travel battery available, let's say around 2000-3000 mAh? -
Hi, Phil
I've never heard of a smaller battery. The 4400mAh is the smallest afaik. -
Thanks Der Mali, and hi.
Any guess on the 1920*1200 through HDMI capability? -
Sorry, I've no clue. That's not my métier.
-
May not be exactly the answer you are looking for but we just got one of the 1410's in with the 3500 processor.
It will do 1920*1080 through the monitor we have that supports that res -
Yeah no doubt it will do full HD. It seems that is goes higher too.
-
Is there an audible warning you can set for low battery as there is in XP?
-
any news on a possible 9cell battery for the 1810 yet?
-
I'm wondering if anyone else besides lepton attempted to silence their noisy fan.
I disassembled the fan + heatsink and put a piece of silicone between the fan housing and the heatsink's fins, where the metal to metal contact is. Unfortunately, that did not fix the problem.
I'm still getting rattling noises that seem to be in part positional. I'm wondering if it isn't the fan itself...
BTW, for some reason searching in this thread doesn't seem to work, anyone else noticed that? -
Yes. It's never worked for me either.
Hope someone can help with the fan because most of us will probably end up with this issue eventually. BTW, did you happen to dissassemble the unit enough to see how the switch that indicates if the lid is open or closed works? -
There are 2 things which I want to bring in your attention:
-battery life
-CPU temperature
I use the 1410 tray to disable aero and fan noise and I did the undervolting tweak. I get 3 hours of batttery in movie mode and around 5.45-6 hours in net browsing mode. Did you manage to squeeze more than that ?
About CPU temperature, while watching movie some time rises up to 58 celsius. Is this normal, should I worrie about this figure ? Thanks. -
Your battery life is quite good. 58° is no problem. You might be able to lower the temp and increase battery life while watching movies by using DXVA.
-
Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to that, but since I'll be opening it again, I'll take a look and report back.
My unit's fan also makes noise when I tilt the laptop back and forth quickly, as if the blades were scraping something. Other people have reported this too.
I'm not sure whether this is typical on all units or if both symptoms occuring together are in fact indicative of a defective fan.
The heatsink + fan assembly doesn't seem to available from parts stores at a reasonable price either. -
Thanks. While you're there, I wonder if you could also look at what provides the resistance to opening the lid, and perhaps suggest how it could be reduced (to allow for one-handed opening).

For you guys who have had these for a while, how well are they holding up? Screen hinges still staying firm? Keyboard still working well?
