Quick question! How do I remove the HDD on the 1810T? I can't find this information anywhere. I'd rather not break anything since the unit is brand new. :)

I've got the smaller part of the gold connector out (it just.. pops out when you pull on it..) but the wider part at the top is still in. I really have no idea here.

EDIT: Wow, I'm stupid. That was easy.

The Intel Celeron 743 is scoring higher than the Intel Core2 Solo U3500 in all the benchmarks under the same OS.Now that's very interesting ! ! !

    Got some links?
If it's PassMark, forget it. It's watered-down with Win7 results.

The SuperPI and wPrime results reflect the performance differences caused by the 100MHz lower core clock of the Celeron. I wonder when/if the PassMark guys are going to repair their benchmark suite.

"Keep in mind many of these benchmarks are averages of individual user tests. As always, YMMV."

This means these benchmarks are not specific to OS, RAM, hard drive speed, or any other upgrades the user performed.

SuperPi uses both the processor AND ram, so different ram configurations will affect that test. Not to mention, SuperPi is single thread, and therefore, does not use dual cores to their full potential.

I'm sure Prime is the same as far as using both the ram and the processor.

We already know the inaccuracy of the Passmark benchmark.

In our case, a more valid test would be to take the three 1410s with the difference processors but exact configuration for everything else. Same memory amount, speed, timing, same hard drive, etc.

Very nice deal... though that's the slower single core processor.
Oh well, with my 10% cashback... mine with the other proc was 368.99 + 4.99 ship. Not bad

    Hey guys:

Got the 1410 Single Core through the amazon.com deal.

Question: Has anyone tried getting the windows 7 upgrade through Acer (via "Mentor"?)

This 11/26 review on amazon.com ( here) has me a bit worried:

"I signed up for the free upgrade on November 3rd. I did not received it yet. I tried to contact Mentor (who handles these upgrades for Acer) via e-mail about two weeks ago. They have not replied back."

I saw the clean install link but I'd rather have the no-brainer approach which I imagine would be the usb drive (?) windows 7 installer from them.

(I didn't find this addressed through the search function or google. Any insight is very thankfully welcomed :) )

I got mine a couple of weeks after Win 7 was released, but I was on the list pretty early.

I did the upgrade, but ended up doing a clean install after my upgrade grew to 57gb! Here's a link to my issues with the upgrade.

    Wha the FFFF?! Hahahaha.

[shakes head] Even in death, Windows Vista haunts us :)

Thanks for that link. Sounds like Mentor sent you a usb drive that was able to do both:

    * an (hefty) update
    *OR a full/clean install of W7 right?

Glad you got yours figured out so quickly and thanks for ur input. This is getting less scary.

Actually, they send a DVD so you have to make a USB or and external DVD drive.

I actually installed W7 Pro that I got from MSDNAA program. After the install, you need to go to Acer and get the latest drivers to get everything working. I didn't do that because I haven't used Windows 7. Maybe I'll get around to it one of these days, but Ubuntu is my main OS and I haven't had a need to boot Windows. I'll probably just make a VM of Windows 7 at some point so I can play with it without rebooting.

    EDIT:

I will add that it might be easier to get a DVD drive. Because installing MS programs like Visual Studio, Office and Visio from a USB is a PITA. Then you need validation keys for everything.

Really, Linux is way easier to use. Just download and install your software. No need for media devices or activation codes.

When was the 1410 keyboard redesigned? I've seen some photos of 1410s (with SU3500 processors, I believe) that have a very awkward looking keyboard layout, with a large Enter key and a tiny left Shift key. Do all of the newer models have the improved keyboard?

That depends on what part of the world your are in.

My US keyboard looks like this (AS1410 w/SU3500):

Ah... maybe that's the difference. Perhaps the photos I've seen were all non-US keyboards.

Any thoughts regarding the relative merits of the SU3500 vs. the Celeron M 743? I see models with the SU3500 still available on some sites. Most have XP, but some have Win7 Home Premium.

I'd say grab up a DualCore SU2300 while they are still available. Looks to me
like the SU2300 model is being replaced by the much slower Intel 743.

The SingleCore 743 is even slower than the SingleCore SU3500.
    Comparison here at Intel.

Also see this great printable CPU chart recently compiled by a member.

They seem to both be available currently, but I'm not familiar with the history of the product. If the SU2300 model was released first, then you could be right. Seems like Acer is trying desperately to keep the MSRP at $400 while whittling away the specs as their costs increase.

My biggest concern is the relative battery life of the dual core vs. single core 1410. Do tools exist that allow you to easily underclock or even disable a single core of the SU2300 to maximize battery life?

According to this chart and others I've seen, the 743 scores higher than the SU3500. I'm not sure how that's possible with a slightly slower clock speed and 1/3 the L2 cache.

My impression is that the SU3500 appears to only have briefly been available with Win7 Home Premium. The only part number I've found with that combo is AS1410-8373 (blue) from J&R. The remainder of SU3500 equipped 1410s have Vista installed.

I just got an Acer Aspire AS1410-2936 Ruby Red with Intel Celeron SU2300 processor. I ordered some g.skill memory to replace the 2 X 1 gigs sticks with 2X 2 gigs sticks but the memory I got doesn't work with this netbook.

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Dual Channel Kit Laptop Memory Model F2-5300CL5D-4GBSA. The timing on the memory is 5-5-5-15 and the memory sticks that came with the netbook look like 5-5-5-12.

I tried each stick by itself and couldn't get it to work that way either. I went into bios and didn't see a way to set the timing for memory.

I'll see if I could return this memory to Newegg and get some more. Does anyone know what kind of memory will work with this Netbook? I don't see any that say 5-5-5-12.

    Thanks!

They were released at the same time. The 743 has a larger hard drive to compensate for the slower processor. Read the OP or Acer's site for more info.

Edit: Sorry, I though we were in the "dual-core" thread (don't ask...lol). Anyway, the OP of this thread doesn't have the latest models listed. Check this one out: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=424213

The 743 scores were run on Windows 7 while most of the SU3500 scores were run on Vista. It has been suggested that this is skewing the results.

There doesn't appear to be any major complaints with the SU2300's battery life. Either no one wants to admit they are disappointed or everyone has realistic expectations. Expect "real world" battery life to be about 2 hours less than claimed and be happy if you get more than 4-5 hours of use. I consistently get a solid 4 hours out of SU3500 using Linux which is a little more thirsty than Windows.

True. The Vista machines are eligible for a free Windows 7 upgrade though. Still, I'd buy the 2300 with 7 pre-installed unless I got a great deal on the SU3500. Installing Windows 7 from a USB and updating the drivers is a bit of a pain. There are some good guides out there and 7 installs better than any Windows to date, but you still have to jump through a few hoops to get it set up. Not horrible, but it takes a little more effort than it should in my opinion.

Make sure you remove the battery and AC connector while changing the memory. I had some troubles in the past with the SPD settings not resetting until I power down my systems fully.

Also there is a chance that your memory was DOA. Verify in other device if you can.

i just got screwed by cheap-laptop-batteries.com on their 5600mah battery.

a week into my order i am emailed back asking if i will accept a 5 dollar discount for a 5200mah model becuase the 5600mah is not in stock. i refuse the kind 'gesture' and ask how long until the 5600mah model is back in stock only to see my paypal is refunded 90$. What the heck?! outstanding customer service.

where else can i get the 1810t 5600mah battery, or is an extended battery to this out yet, as was speculated a while ago?

I bought my nephew a core 2 solo model in September. I had it shipped to a friend in the US and then got it shipped onto me. My nephew said he wanted W7 for Christmas and i was about to buy him a copy of Amazon for about £70. I thought that i would have to get the discs sent onto a friend in the US and it would be too complicated.
However, i ordered the discs and paid £12.82 and they will be shipping it to me in the UK direct.
I had no such luck with my Sony.

This is very good service. I hope that doing the upgrade path is straight forward.

I just ordered the 5200 pack.. UM09E36 - I did not see a 5600mah pack.. but the 5200mah is 800mah more, about another hour of operating time.. I think perhaps they made a 'typo' - stating a 5600mah pack, when it should have been a 5200mah..

But if there is a 5600 mah, please let us have the part number.

Will be interesting to see what I get, the part number is the E36.. so either the info is wrong on the web - stating the E36 is a 5200mah, or they have made a new E36 which is 5200mah.. I'd sure like the E36 to be 5600mah..

I looked up a few E36's.. they state:

    ACER Li-ion battery UM09E36,Rating 11.1V 5200mAh 58Wh

    Even though the link states..

    ACER Li-ion battery UM09E36,Rating 11.1V 5600mAh 63Wh

    Another states:
    Product ID:1001970
    Battery Type:Li-ion
    Battery Voltage:11.1 V
    Battery Capacity:5600 mAh (6 cell)
    Battery Color:Black

And the last site I'll check says..

    Product ID: 1001970
    Battery Type: Li-ion
    Voltage: 11.10 V
    Capacity: 5200 mAh
    Color: Black

Same exact part number.. can't wait to see what comes in..

On Dec. 9 American Express had 175 Ruby Red AS1410 w/ su3500 Intel core 2 solo chips on sale for $309...they sold out in 1 second, literally.

I used Google checkout, so my AS1410 cost me $304, delivered to my house. UPS say they will deliver my 1410 on Weds 12/16...sweet deal!! :D :D :D

Any of the other 175 lucky Amex card holders on this Board?

Once I get my 1410 and the serial number, how long should it take for Acer to send the Win 7 upgrade?

    Thanks

Most 1410's are being sold with the Win 7 Premium.. are you sure yours does not come installed? Since the system does not come with a CD to install any software, perhaps they will just send you a product code number, and you download from the web? I'm sure most of us "recent" buyers got the Win 7 home Premium 64 bit..

Suppose the Fry's deal was pretty good as it came with Win 7 installed.

Well if this thread is dying we can make one big thread again.

All 1410 and 1810 users reunited again :)

Edit: I think it's a good idea, I'll make the other thread the main thread. This one will be closed.

If you disagree PM me and tell me why.
