I had my Aspire 1430Z for almost 2 years. Works very well and is /was reliable. I had a problem with it 2 months ago, where it had a problem starting but never getting to the IE page. I had just run my ESET Nod32, earlier in the day.
I managed to get into recovery and rebuilt from factory new.

Today, same problem, only now I can't get into recovery, pressing Left "ALT" + "F10" together when I see the Acer logo. It starts windows and says "wait a while". the HD lite comes on for 5-10 sec. and nothing.

Anyone know of this problem. Is my hard drive dying?

I am thinking of removing the back and unplug the HD and then re-plug it, to see if that will help.

    :(

Use Linux to boot and check SMART status or better yet post all SMART attributes here.

By SMART are you refering to software to see what is happening to the HD or is it a program in Ubuntu?

I performed a second test, using GSmartcontrol, this is a 95 minutes test. I beleive there is a read error.

Apparently there are two sectors pending relocation which is never good but it shouldn't cause sinuses like yours (quite a few more troublesome sectors would be needed)

A few reviews on this HD (WD3200BPVT) have talked about early failures, 6 mo. -18 mo. So I guess that I need to call Acer support and see if I have any warranty left on this drive. I bought this 1430Z, March, 2011. It has been a very good machine, until....

Thanks for your help. I hadn't used Ubuntu in a long time, so it took a little time to re-teach myself. BTW, when I would tell the computer to start normally, it would show the windows logo for about twenty seconds , then go to a blue screen with a message, Unmountable_boot_volume.

Put your hard drive in another pc, backup your data, do a check on the hard drive using some software and if it's damaged you just get a new one..

Yes, very good advice. However I don't have another PC that accepts 2.5 HD. Will a SATA cable work with the 2.5". If it does then I can do what xndbogdan suggests.

I ordered an eRecovery Media. I got it today but they sent discs, instead of an USB device. The 1430Z has to optical drive. I will call Customer Service tomorrow and see if I can get what I need.
