Hi all, this is my first post. I am thinking of getting a new laptop that is preferably below £850. I have searched the net and I have found 2 models that fit my prefs. Both are manufactured by Acer and are on http://www.acernotebooks.co.uk for around £800.

    Specs:

    Acer Aspire 1672WLMi

Intel Pentium 4 HT @ 3.0 GHz (800 MHz FSB)
    15.4" WXGA TFT Display
    512 MB DDR SDRAM
    60 GB HDD
ATi Mobility Radeon 9700 (64 MB Dedicated)
    Dual Layer +/- DVDRW Drive

    Acer Aspire 1522WLMi

    AMD Mobile Athlon 64bit 3000+
    15.4" WXGA TFT Display
    512 MB DDR SDRAM
    60 GB HDD
    GeForce Go5700 (64 MB Dedicated)
    +/- DVDRW Drive

As you can see the main differences are the CPU's and GPU's. Does any one know the performance differences between a "P4 with the ATi M Radeon 9700" and a "64bit AMD with GeForce Go5700"? What would be my best bet?

I am not concerned about battery life, all I need is the most powerful/stable solution, that I will be using to play newish games and various other media related apps.

Also has anyone had any bad experiences aith Acer ot these models?

Finally if anyone has any other suggestions they would be gladly appreciated!! [ :)]

I would select the Acer Aspire 1522WLMi due to 64-bit capabilities and more linux friendly GPU.

are you sure the 1522 is fitted with the full mobile AMD 64 processor (as in the Ferrari) and not the DTR (desk top replacement) version?

This is the Acer website but it doesn't seem clear to me whether it's the mobile version of the processor or not:

    http://www.acer.co.uk/acereuro/page4.do?dau22.oid=6640&UserCtxParam=0&GroupCtxParam=0&dctx1=17&ctx1=UK&crc=2341434646

Personally I don't think it is as the wording on the spec is different to the Ferrari's spec.

Have you considered the 1683WLMI? with Centrino? You can pick one at www.comet.co.uk (of all places) for £850 or www.shopacer.co.uk. There's also the 1682 which is a little cheaper.

I'm in the same boat as you and not sure what model to plump for! Let me know what you decide! [ :)]

My friend told me AMD 64 bit much faster when rip movie. I think 64 bit would be better choice.
