hi there.. anyone here using the acer aspire 1681WLCi (should be similiar to 1681WLMi) have any problems playing the latest games like doom 3 / lock on / far cry / dawn of war (demo) ?

these games always crashes on startup of the game and VPU recovery tool always report that VPU is not responding. (using omega drivers)
(older games can be played no problem however..)
do i have a faulty ati radeon 9700 chip?

Are you using the latest Omega drivers? Are you overclocking your graphics card? Have you tried using the lastest drivers for your card from the Acer site? Have you tried the latest drivers from the ATI site?

If you can't get the ATI drivers from the ATI site to work with your notebook, goto www.driverheaven.net and download the Mobility Modder (on the left side). This will modify the INF file to allow you to install the drivers properly.

If overclocking your GPU, try running without any overclocking.

Check the Acer site & ID Software site for any updates that may fix this problem on your system.

If it's still crashing with the included drivers, try download the ATI drivers directly from the ATI site & run the Mobility Modder as I indicated in my previous post. If the GPU locks up on just the higher games and not the older ones, it's a software problem (OS, drivers, games) that is the cause.

Is DirectX 9.0 installed? Make sure it is installed, you can get it from the Microsoft site.

Going to the extreme, you can try reloading the OS from scratch. This will be the best test to see if it could be some software/drivers that is causing the problem.

i tried the ati catalyst 4.8 with dh's mod before trying omega's. i also updated the my xp home to sp2 with dx 9.0c. its the same throughout..
then finally used the recovery cd to reinstall everything back the original and reinstall the games. still the same problem.
i even tried to remove the extra 256 memory they added for me when i bought it. no diff. its the worst kind of crashing with so many games i've ever seen.
arrgghh... the first laptop and i'm these problems..
i've read some others using 1681WLMi(same basic config as mine) but no problem playing doom 3 at medium settings.

What happens if you drop your settings to low, does it still crash?

If this continuosly happens, then it's possible that you have some bad hardware, but I still get the feeling it's s/w related, but I could be wrong. Best thing to do, is to contact Acer for possible service on the unit and also contact ID Software & Ubisoft (I think they made Far Cry) and see if they can provide any help.

cant even get to the settings screen for doom3. it just freeze on the very first screen that says loading. same for lock on, if i try to access the graphic options it just freezes. tried disabling write combining and dropping graphics acceleration under display drivers (under acer helpline advice), still no go..i'm bringing it to them today..see what can be done.

thanks venombbite.. seems like u're the only one that responds to my problem so far.

i have same crashing problems with my Acer Aspire 1604
Sometimes it freezes when starting a game, sometimes it freezes in between a game (e.g. Warcraft III FT)...
    I will try the Modder..
