    Hello all,

I've been trying to track down the new 1691 for some time now. (the x700, pentium m730, 80gb version) Comet HAD it for sale, alongside the older model, at £691, until Saturday morning. No sign of it any more on the website, but not discontinued, according to the Comet person I spoke with on the phone.

Has anyone else had difficulties in buying the Aspire 1691, or, if you have managed to get one for a decent price (close to £700), where did you get it??

    Thanks
    Raymond

I was lucky enough to get mine from Comet at their on-line price of £691.99. Works a treat and no bad pixels. Its a very nice unit.

I had to place 2 orders. On placing the first order I was notified next day they were no longer in stock, only to re-appear again the next day, so I re-ordered, and received it a week later. I noticed they have gone out of stock again.

They do get them in fairly regular I believe. I notice that most of the other dealers only seem to be selling the older model with the ATI X600 card instead of the X700 card. Only reason I bought it from Comet.

Need to buy a laptop this week. Acer would be good, but can't get it online. Would have to fork out £60 more than the online price to get one instore.

Have decided to go for the Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo A1650-34. AMD Athlon 64 chip, and more or less the same spec as the Aspire 1691WLMi.

If anyone thinks that this is a majorly bad move to make, let me know, as i'll be buying two of the bad boys sometime tomorrow!

    Cheers
    Raymond

i got mine from comet last week. it had one dead pixel so they claim they are sending me a new one tomorrow. i doubt it will come if there are these supply issues.

by the way, comet phone staff will tell you anything to get you off thier back, dont listen to them.

it also had an annoying hard drive clicking noise.

Sorry to hear about the duff pixel, that was one of my main concerns. I'll accept one or two when the unit has had some use, but not when new. Generally IME most bad pixels will be present when new or appear within 24/48 hours of use. Its rare to get them later, though it can happen of course.

I notice you mention a ticking from the hard-drive, I too noticed a ticking on mine, but it was only present when the screen saver activated, and so was quickly remedied, either disabling or changing screen saver resolved it for me.

Pleased with mine. just hope I never need to return it to Comet in the future.

Yeah I dont really care about the dead pixel now. The hard drive noise is only when the hard drive is being accessed [and the little light comes on next to the shortcut buttons]. Other then that its a fast machine, shame I cant use it untill comet decide to send me the replacement on the day they keep promising.

Glad you're happy with the 1691.

I'm expecting Comet to deliver me two Amilo 1650's tomorrow. Seems more future proof than the acer, but i hope the Athlon 64 processor isn't a second best to the Aspire's Pentium M. Just couldn't bring myself to fork out an extra £50 for the instore priced Aspire. Acer should have got their act together and made more of the X700 wlmi's. Then Comet wouldn't have to keep punting the older model as if it's the latest!

    Cheers

I know that, it just seems that way.

They never committed to a lead time on getting any new stock in of the new version (the one you got - lucky).

Waiting in all bloody day for these laptops. Thank you Comet all day delivery slot!
