    Hi all,

    First the background:
I have a Acer Aspire 1692 WLMi (1.7Ghz Centrino, 512MB, x700 Mobility Radeon) with Windows XP Professional SP2 installed on the C: partition(converted to NTFS before installation)..and a D:\ partition which had to OS on it, but it was the FAT32 file system. Now I even made further linux paritions and installed 2 Linux Distributions on it, but lets forget about that for now.

    Now the problem!!:
Now I wanted to install a copy of Windows 2003 on the D:\ partition, but I chose to convert the D: partition to NTFS first (so I didn't lose my existing files), now before I could even start to install Windows, my laptop suddenly wouldn't boot at all :( Instead it gave an error saying "Operating System not found".

So immediately, what I did was put in the XP SP2 CD and start ther Recovery Console and use the command "fixboot"..thinking the boot record might be spoilt somehow and maybe that would fix it, but nothing happened :( It still gave the same error message. I even tried the "fixmbr" command, but it went nowhere, got the same error.

So what do I do now? I could use the Acer Recovery Disk, but I really can't affod to lose all my data in the current Windows XP Pro SP2 installation (the main one on C:\) :( Is there anyway I could back this up eventhough I cannot bootup? Or better yet, is there anyway I could restore the state of my drive to the previous config if at all?

This is really importantto me and I don't want to send in my laptop to Acer servicinig for 2 weeks, and I kinda' need the laptop urgently.

What could have caused this problem though? Did Acer have some hidden files in D: partition and I shouldn't have converted to NTFS? Or what? :(

Appreciate all the help, thank you very much in advance. :)

This might not be the best way but maybe you could put it in an usb enclosure on one of your friend's computer and try to get your data that way.

Thanks for the idea, I'll have to ask a friend if i can borrow his usb enclosure for the purpose.

Anyone else has any suggestions at all? I really want to get this working :(

It's possible you may have made the D: partition the active partition when you converted it to NTFS.

    - Try booting using a Windows 98 boot disc and goto the command prompt.
    - Type FDISK and hit enter
    - Just agree with a couple prompts regarding Large drives and NTFS partitions (as long as it doesn't say to delete anything)
    - Select 4 and hit enter. This will display your partition info. Which ever is the C: partition, you should see an A beside it. This will mean it's the active partition (bootable). If the A is on the D: partition, this will explain it. Since there's no OS in D:, it'll give the OS not found error.

I don't think you can make the change here, you can give it a try, but it may give you an error to say that there can only be 1 active partition error. If this is the case, you need to run Partition Magic or some other patitioning software utility and make that change so C: is the active partition. After restarting, it should be working (as long as you still have an OS in the C: partition.

    Good Luck!

Hi there. I have the same laptop as you and I have noticed something very odd. If I were to go into my documents for example and select all of my files by dragging the mouse over and off of them cotninuasly I get a very weird high pitched sound form within the laptop. This also happens when i play fifa 2006. During the game and some of the menus i get this weird high pitched proccessing sound like nothing ive heard before. I think it only happens when the proccessor is under stress. Now this is my 3rd aspire laptop and this has never happened to me before. Does yours make these noises. And also does the fan run pretty much non stop? Please get back to me asap...

Thank you very much for your time.
