The Acer 1420P is also available in Germany.
I was even able to catch a glimpse of it.

Bought the 1825PTZ *the low-end model* here in Malaysia. I've been using it for about a week now and am satisfied with it's performance. The Capacitive screen is extremely responsive although theirs a slight delay time although it's probably because of the processor.

"Note: The battery life below is currently just an estimate since I turned it off and on during video playback.

The battery life is phenomenal lasting 3-4 hours while watching HD videos in balanced mode*Medium Brightness*, about 2-3.30 hours watching videos in High Performance Mode *Full Brightness* and 4-6 hours of normal usage * I use it as a digital book in college* although there was some stuttering while playing some HD videos but hopefully a system format would fix that.

The only thing I'm disappointed in is the sub-par speaker * I don't own any other netbooks so this could be the same for all netbooks*, the chiclet keyboard *from a programmers prospective*, the inability to permanently turn off the annoying accelerometer and the inability to easily use OneNote due to no proper stylus *Just ordered a dagi and pogo stylus which would hopefully fix this*.

I got sick of waiting for these things to materialize here in the US, so Im writing this from an iPad.

Plus i can't see windows 7 being a great touch interface. I was not very impressed with the HP touchscreen desktops I've seen.

If i need to do something that the iPad can't, i can login to my windows machines remotely. From the iPad. :)

Hi Xenomodo, i also live in Malaysia and typing this using 1825ptz...best tablet ever..easily beats ipad by having win7 as the OS. Just want to ask u, which stylus in ur opinion is the best one to use with this laptop? I would primarily use it to take notes on meetings

    hi,
i've read almost everything but now I am completely lost
    I don't understand inking feature :(

on amazon.de there is a message comparing resistive and capacitive screens of 1820PT and 1825PTZ which says:

resistive screen of 1820 can be used for taking notes with stylus
and capacitive screen of 1825 can not be used in that way at all

is it true? or one can use stylus of special kind?

does anybody tried to write text on Acer's screen really?

in all videos they write 3-5 big letters through all 11" screen - and this is not the kind of writing which I am interested in

P.S. I do understand from the thread that inking is better on these hp-laptops, but 2.2 kilos is too heavy, so I want to try one of the Acers and just don't understand which one

The Acers will not be good for any kind of extended inking (note taking in class). The resistive screen will work with any kind of stylus, but it has terrible palm rejection and will not be able to keep up with your hand writing. The capacitive screen can use a capacitive stylus but comes with no palm rejection and capacitive screens by nature are inaccurate.

Your best options for inking at a cheap price is the HP tm2, but your best light weight option would be the Lenovo x201/x200 tablet or HP 2740p/2730p, but these business tablets are fairly expensive unless you buy them refurb/used

Thanks for this thread, lots of good info!

Would like to know how many of you guys are still using the Acer tablet after a few months to a year, has there been any changes? Any problems with the tablet hinges?

I've been wanting to get a tablet or an alternative to the ipad, been looking at android tablets, looks promising, nice weight but some problems with usability (cheap screens) and video playback. The upcoming tablets are running Cortex, telechips or Atom CPUs. Having used an atom netbook for a while, it is too sluggish to be used like a multimedia laptop. This Acer seemed like the perfect next step from the android, Atom and Celeron tablets.

Anyway, would appreciate someone's feedback on the Acer tablets.

Still using the 1825PTZ here for casual surfing. The screen viewing angles are not good on the table so rarely use it as a pure tablet. Lost a rubber nub but doesn't affect the screen - hinge is the same but wish it was better. Otherwise, size is perfect. It's great to have capacitive touchscreen when you want and also use keys to input more than 5 characters. Like logging into facebook and commenting with the keyboard but viewing pictures by tapping etc.

Installed ie9 beta and makes touch surfing much more comfortable. Not sure if the video hardware acceleration is enabled but the browser is more snappier and comparable to firefox/chrome.

I mainly view multimedia on my TV and rarely take the Acer out on the road. Bought a 10" travel case for it since it didn't come with a bag. 10" is a perfect fit so be sure to bring your machine and find out you need to carry your adapter and accessories.

I found that the notebook couldn't connect to my new wifi network in my home. Turns out that the wifi card on this machine doesn't support 5Ghz but only 2.4 Ghz wireless N. 802.11 G works fine.

Thought about hackint0sh on this thing but couldn't be bothered. If you are interested you can find how to put osx on the 1410 here. The suggested wifi card replacement should allow 5Ghz wireless N.

Finally, I'm looking at speeding up the hard drive. Has anybody installed a SSD on one of these models or can suggest a good SSD drive? Let me know if you have a guide to mirror or transfer all the Acer partition (settings?) or just start from scratch.

    Hey dundan,

Thanks for the quick review of your Acer, I went out and bought the 1820PT (excellent deal!) plus a 3 year warranty (1 year Acer and 2 year Harvey Norman), a wireless mouse and bag. Bag is like one of those messenger type but more solid with very strong paddings.

I read every single page of this thread plus others, but not much on user feedback after a certain period of use. I knew about the hinge that might loosen over time, thought the warranty might help with that as well as some insurance on the screen.

Instead of the capacitive screen of the 1825PTZ, I have the resistive type. Tried the touch pen, seems to work well however I felt that I had to write slowly. I haven't tried calibrating it just yet.

Installed Google and tried reading manga in portrait mode, loved it. It can get heavy after a while but I just try and rest it on a table or my stomach when I'm lying down. Haven't tried IE9 beta yet, heard mixed opinions regarding CSS issues (again).

I'm hoping to use the Acer as a replacement to the existing (and incredibly slow) Atom based Lenovo netbook that I'm using right now. Battery life for that has been good (5-7 hours using wireless), but can get sluggish running several internet pages at once especially with youtube. Video playback is one of the reason why I wanted to get a core 2 duo based computer instead of Atom, rockchip, via or telechips found in a lot of tablets these days. While 1080p won't cause any problems on the Acer there are videos with soft-subtitles and certain media playing software do the job better than others (ie.KM player, GOM etc). Windows media center when set up to play all the codecs will be formidable on this.

I read that there can be SSDs that are slower than SATA, so yeah best to do some research on TOmshardware or anandtech. I'm not going with SSD just yet because the 250GB HD will come in handy, but if I set up a wireless network then I will definitely look into getting a 128GB SSD.

BTW, how do you restore Windows 7 and the software on the Acer?

Does anyone know how to insert the sim card? I can see sim card icon within the battery compartment but there's nothing there to insert the card in properly.

    Hi,

is your laptop shipped with a 3G modem? If not, then there is no working SIM card slot.

I don't think it does because I only got the basic specs that probably everyone else got in Australia (and since the 1820PT is the old model).

Also, I could not get one in black.

    Ok,

so if your laptop doesn't have a built-in 3G device, then there is so SIM card slot.

ive recently bought the 1825ptz and im very happy with it though the only downside is that in portrait tablet mode the viewing angle is pretty poor, i find myself havin to tilt the screen back and left in order to get the right quality view, has anyone else found this?

I hate apple for giving the ipad the best quality touchscreen i have ever used, viewing angles arent an issue with it, and not giving it all the feautures of my acer like webcam usb etc...oh and flash too.
