My Drive is making a crumbling sounds all the time, I checked it with HDtune and everything was fine, no errors at all......

Is my hard drive dying and should I step up to a 5400rpm drive for my laptop?

    Thanks.

The hard drive in my 3003 was pretty quite. The crumbling noise might be characteristic for the brand of the drive. Modern HDD's have SMART feature which should give warnings if the drive is about to fail. If the noise is too loud then it might be a symptom of failure, but if the noise is just regular disk access sound, then it might be due to some background program wrting to the disc.

Stepping up to a 5400rpm HDD might be a good idea as you'll see some good performance boost and you'll be able to select a better drive than the stock one.

I would agree with Miner. Only other thing that comes to mind is Windows like's to index the hard drive. I know on my IBM at work, it can get a bit loud.
