My Aspire 3100 is just over a year old now, and sometimes when I turn it on the screen stays blank.
If I plug it into another monitor it displays fine on that monitor, but my laptop screen stays blank.
The problem is getting more and more frequent. The only times it ever starts or stops working is after I've reset or turned it on, or if it is coming out of hibernation.

Is this a problem I can fix myself, or will I have to get it serviced?

turn the unit on in bright light and look at the screen for a faint image, if there is a faint image its likely that the inverter has failed, however the LCD panel could have failed or there may be a power related issue with the mainboard. The inverter is the most likely culprit though.
