Hello to the group and good day.
A friend gave me an Acer Aspire 3680 notebook with a broken DC jack. To replace the jack, I need to take the machine apart to get to the mainboard.
Acer Support tells me that the machine needs to be returned to them for the work to be done. They say that the work that needs to be done is not a user servicable part. I have bought the replacement jack. I just need to install it. Acer does not supply this information.
So far, I have not been able to find any disassembly information specific to the unit. I'm being held up because I need to know how to remove the keyboard. Once it's removed, I should be able to figure out how to complete the disassembly.
Can any one direct me to information about how to remove the keyboard?
Thanks and good day.

There should be a panel above the keyboard that is usually held in place by a series of tabs. You will need to pry it up. Starting from one corner, gently lift it until you can remove the entire panel. If it seems overly difficult, look around the LCD hinges for screws, some laptops have them. You should find that the keyboard is held in place by 2 - 3 screws at the top, remove these screws, lift the keyboard, whilst being careful with the ribbon connector.
Note that this is not a definite guide as I have never touched an Aspire 3680 before. However, this is how you remove most acer keyboards and many other laptops. Remember to ground yourself before messing around with the sensitive components inside or wear a grounding bracelet to prevent damaging the electronic stuff.
hope this helps -
good video... i like that... we need more like it!!

The dis-assembly its not the major issue .
The PCB and the soldering process , its the hard part , specially if you do not own the proper expensive soldering tools , and knowledge to use them . -
Hello again and many thanks to all who posted responses.
The information was most helpful.
Thank heavens for the forums!! -
Hello again to the group and good afternoon.
The YouTube video made the notebook disassembly a "walk in the park". It's now in pieces on my desk. The DC jack is actually on the daughter card which once separated , is more easily manipulated than the entire mainboard. A bonus that I wasn't expecting.
I'll take the card as well as the new DC jack to a capable friend for the removal of the old jack and the re-soldering of the new one.
I'm really disappointed about the lack of help from Acer. I probably would not consider buying an Acer product because of this factor. The one I have here belongs to a friend who I'm trying to help.
Thanks again to the group for the help. I'll post a final comment when the machine is back together.
Have a great day everyone. -
I guess you might be looking for this ?
Instead of soldering, you could get a new part..(Search for Acer 3680 DC/USB Board) -

This will probably be my final post on this thread.
The beast lives!!
I took the board to a capable friend who replaced the DC jack.
On re-assembly, the machine fired up and seems to run well.
A special note of appreciation to ANDYNBR for the YouTube video on disassembly and reassembly. I might not have been able to do this job without the video. No thanks to Acer.
Also thanks to all who posted responses and to those reading my posts.
Have a great day everyone and best wishes from Eastern Canada. -
Glad the vids helped !!

I'll re-up them to youtube, when I'm free.

Amazing hey!!. Acer complains and their Service Guide PDF files may no longer be posted here.
And along comes a user like Andy who posts a non copyrighted step by step video to help which beats any PDF document hands down.
I wish Acer would learn. If there is a will there is a way.
And helping is the way to go....

Hi Guys
I have an acer 3682 with a faulty keyboard and HD. Any chance of that youtube vid being re-posted so I can see how to take out the KB.
Any tips on where to get a replacement keyboard and HD would also be very much appreciated.
Many Thanks in advance

Search for the vids on youtube.
HD - Hard Drive? There are quite a few online stores. You can check them out, depending upon where you live.
Keyboard - You can try out ebay, zandparts or notebooksolutions. -
Thanks for the info Andy. I have now managed to get the KB out and will search the sites you recommend for a new one. Re hard drives in laptops , are they a standard size like desktops or do you have to get one for your model of lappie
Cheers

You'll be looking for 2.5" 9.5mm Mobile HDDs. Download PC Wizard 2008, and checkout the drives section in it to find out which connector your motherboard has got (IDE or SATA).
-
Thanks Andy. The connector in the HD bay is 2 rows of about 20 female pins (approx 2 ich long) so I'm assuming IDE as I believe SATA is not as long.
Cheers

Yes, its a 44-pin IDE Connector. Samsung HM160HC is one of the best (overall) mobile IDE HDDs, alongwith the WD3200BEVE being the fastest and quite expensive.

If you go to this link you will be able to download the service manual for the laptop
