Someone recently gave me an Acer Aspire 3680-2354 to repair but ended up giving me the laptop because they didn't want to spend any money on it. Anyway, after buying an A/C adaptor and hinge cover and removing a stick of bad RAM and downgrading it from Vista to WinXP Pro - it seems to be functioning fine now. However, it seems to be running fairly warm to downright hot. I am not familiar with laptops and must keep in mind the possibility that this may be normal for this particular model. Are hot temperatures normal for this brand/model of laptop? I did clean things out with a can of compressed air. It wasn't that dirty to begin with but it did make me feel better. When I emailed Acer they told me to go into the BIOS and restore the default settings (which I did). When I was initially working on it - wiping the drive and installing the OS and all the updates - the CPU was running at 65C (149F). This is after several hours and in a very warm room (around 27C or 80F). Today I tried playing a few 720p movie trailers and noticed the CPU inching towards 60C (140F). However, once I was done taxing the CPU the temp dropped just as quickly as it heated up. The idle temp of the CPU is around 54-55C (129-131F) and as I stated previously, I use this laptop in my room which ranges from 25-28C. What I did find interesting is a post on this site about the mod which removes the plastic piece that covers 3/4 of the vent on the underside of the machine. Does anyone have any official word on why Acer has this vent mostly covered up? Well, that's it. Any comments, suggestions or opinions are welcomed and appreciated.

First things first- the temps you mentioned are OK. 64*C under load is nowhere near hot by laptop standards. You may want to replace thermal paste that Acer used with something better and apply it with more care than they did- that would help a bit.
If you're still not satisfied you may consider a hardware mod, but I don't see a reason for that. -
It's not very high temps(around 60ยบ) but you could try applying thermal paste and see whether it helps.
