My wife thought her 4 year old Acer Aspire 3690 with Vista was getting "cranky" so she got a new Asus.

I installed Ubuntu Linux on the old Acer and it works fine, but I have noticed this weird behavior...

The "Psensor" program shows the temp oscillating between 46C and 54C every 2 minutes, with the fan coming on for a few seconds each cycle (is this typical?).

However, if I tip it so the left side is down (being careful not to obstruct the vents) the temp goes up over 60C and keeps increasing even though the fan is going high speed. If I put it back level, the fan shuts off and the temp declines rapidly towards 46C.

I am thinking this might be due to the cold end of the heat pipe being lower so the fluid is not getting wicked up to the CPU.

Anyone heard of this, or other explanation?
