as long as you aren't planning on gaming that PC looks like it's OK

ACER gets a bad reputation because thier customer service and support sux,, i would not recomend an ACER to anyone who is not familuar with PCs and confortable with having to do thier own troubleshooting

on the other hand... IMO ACERs are very good laptop for the price...
but the good price comes at a cost... very bad tech support..

infact this website is the unofficial ACER tech support site

bigozone - thanks for your comments, that's all i've heard about Acer as well -very bad support and apparently their laptops fail after about 2 years.

Another thing i've heard is that Athlon processors have compatibility issues with a lot of softwares and a lot of people have advised me against buying anything with Athlon. What is your opinion/experience of Athlon ?

i personally have had nothing but good luck using INTEL cpus.. while working as a tech i saw AMD come out with the first 40mhz FSB 486... i'm not familuar with thier current products thought....

i choose the lower end intel CPUs for thier price/performance... but that's just me..

wish i could give more advice

i've decided to drop the idea of buying this one for 2 reasons.

    1) Acer's rep. Most people i know say their laptops wont last more than 2 years without problems

    2) Athlon processors apparently have compatibility issues with a lot of softwares.

If you are aware of any laptop with a similar spec by HP/Dell/Toshiba please let me know

My 3680 has lasted me more than 2 years and I have stripped it a dozen times..*tuchwud*.. :D and I had bought a refurbished model.. :D it depends upon the person how he/she treats his/her notebook....not upon Acer..

Just happened upon this forum and thread while investigating some Aspire 4520 wireless issues...

I've had my 4520 for about six months now, and no problems to speak of. The wireless issue I mentioned above is, I believe, caused by my 2Wire router/wireless device (from AT&T), but so far I have been unable to track down the actual culprit, so for the time being I hold both as suspect. However, I've had no compatibility issues with the AMD Athlon 64 processor (dual-core 1.9 gHz), and once I got Service Pack 1 installed properly, Vista is running fine (don't download SP1 through Windows Update! Get the CD image!). I also dual-boot Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04, thanks to the ingenious little Wubi installer (which, I think, creates a "live CD" environment on the hard drive), and I've had no issues with Linux compatibility (I can even use the wireless under Ubuntu!).

My 4520 is a nice little lappy for the money, and I've taken it on a couple of trips - but I don't bang around my equipment, I treat it with kid gloves, because I want to try and protect my investment. I know nothing lasts forever, but I had a Toshiba Satellite 1135-S125 that is still running strong six years later (although the battery charging circuit is out, and therefore so is the battery). So hopefully the Aspire will serve me well for years to come.

Happy to be a member of the forum, and hope I can find all the answers I'm looking for (and give a few, too).
