I have a similar problem. I have an acer aspire 5000, and the sound won't work. This all began when i went to check what kind of ram and HDD I had. Putting it back in, i lost a screw, and shook it out. When I put it all back in and booted up my computer I noticed that the sound wouldn't work.
When I use the 'Fn' keys to turn up the volume it doesn't work, nor does it work then i try to mute the volume ( Fn+left/right arrow to turn the volume up or down; Fn+F8 to mute sound). It doesn't even show the bar that would increase or decrease across my screen for volume.
When I move my mouse over the volume icon, it shows it at a low volume and greyed out altogether. Right clicking and going to volume control leaves me with three options: Wave, SW Synth and CD player; it won't even let me go to advanced controls under the pull down menu.
When i right click on the volume icon and go to 'adjust audio properties' at first it used to say no device, but I formatted since then. Now it says, 'Realtek AC97 Audio' but under the "device volume" section it's set to low and greyed out. When i go to the hardware tab, for "Realtek AC'97 Audio" under device properties it reads:
Manufacturer: Realtek
Location: PCI bus 0, device 2, function 7
Device Status: This device is working properly.
Please help, i don't know what to do. When this first happened, I tried restarting, system restore, this one realtek driver that I found online that I don't remember (it gave me a code 10 error after i installed it), taking out the HDD and Ram and putting them back in. Then i tried reformatting and reinstalled windows the the drivers that came with my Acer 5000 (Factory default image back up disks) and still nothing.
I'm getting nervous now and please ask that anyone help me fix this issue. I hope you can, and am sorry for this long message, i've been trying to figure it out since yesterday, and no luck. Please help, this is starting to get me worried.
