My brother was on his Acer Aspire 5004 and all of a sudden it said it was going into hibernation and powered off. This was about a month ago, and it hasn't powered on since. The power supply is good because we tried another know good one. The CMOS battery has juice, so I think that is ok. Does he possibly have a failed mainboard? Any suggestions? It is running Windows XP home.

maybe the battery on the unit is completely dead; i know a lot of acer units wont let you power on the unit if there isn't enough charge in the battery (even if running from mains).

I know it sounds silly but try running from ac only i.e. without the battery inserted.

Don't really remember where or when but I heard from a few people that Aspire 5000 series tends to overheat and has some designing flaw with the motherboard that can't be repaired in any way.

I used to use one (Aspire 5002)- it did run quite hot but no overheating for me. Still after I gave it away I heard it had some issues- sudden power offs.

I'm afraid it's gonna be mobo replacement. :(

If its out of warranty then don't bother with a mainboard replacement. Better to get a new laptop. There are so much better laptops out there than the Aspire 3000/5000.
