Hi all,
Great site first off. A couple weeks back my Acer stopped playing CD's/DVD's - didn't think anything of it. Now it is annoying. Computer is only 4 1/2 months old. CD goes in, green light comes on, starts to read, then nothing.
Tried opening the CDRW software (NTI) and it gives me a "no supported drive" error message so this is obviously hardware related - on the phone now with Acer (****!). I have used the e-recovery software to restore the computer back to the defaults and no luck.
Only 2 drives showing up are C, and D (ACERDATA)
Thoughts?

Sending it out to them tomorrow morning - guess they're going to put a new one in. Doesn't even "show" under device manager.
Must've BIT IT sometime in December. Pretty god **** pathetic for a near-new laptop if you ask me. And there was no way I was paying $109 on a hold just to wait longer for them to send me a new one. -
I had similar problem.
Try to refresh devices list in device manager - should help. -

My ACER 5044 lost contact with its CD/DVD drive after I only tried to run Ubuntu Linux off a CD (not even installing it). This was some months ago, but I think I managed to get it back by using system restore to the last restore point before I fooled around with the Linux CD. No problems since, but I've given up on installing Linux on this laptop.
Acer Aspire 5040 - Where is my CD/DVD ROM?!
