I just got an Acer Aspire 5050 and the fan is extremely loud. It goes off maybe once every one or two minutes .... is there a way to reduce the noise level or is the noise pretty standard? I was hoping to take this laptop to class, but I'm not sure if I should since it's so loud!
Thanks in advance!

does it make a rattling sound or does it just kick into super duper high gear instantly?
If it just kicks into extra high gear off the bat it sounds like you are not giving it the proper venting to cool it down properly / constantly and as a result it is heating up VERY quickly and is going into extreme measures to cool it down to the point it thinks it is safe again.
Go read up on the guides for installing NHC (notebook hardware control) and or using throttling software to have your pc be under clocked or using less cycles overall. This will save you the trouble of wasting battery life on cooling it down further, etc.

I have the same issue. Aspire 5050-5401 is mine and the fan always comes on/off on 30-40 second intervals! This is my first laptop so I'm not familiar if this is normal or not. Aren't they supposed to come on at slow speed and only go to high if they are really hot? Mine comes at full speed and is quite loud. This happens even if I leave it on a table with ventilation holes unblocked and CPU speed lowered to lowest setting!
I just bought the laptop a week ago.
-Any other people with this problem?
-Also, are Acer cooling fans variable in speed or do they just work in OFF/FULL SPEED ON method? -
Same problem here aspire5050-3371. Also checked processor s suggested and running around 10 to 20% average.
Any more suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks
