Ok, Acer Aspire 5050, Windows XP, with Realtek 5.1.5172 audio.

Problem I'm getting is that stupid built in microphone, how the hell do I disable it? I use a mic/headphone set instead, much better quality.

If I use a plug-in headset/microphone, these work fine, but as soon as the microphone is unplugged, the built-in microphone becomes active, and unless the microphone volume or speaker volume is turned down, there will be bad feedback through the speakers and lock up on Windows.

I've uninstalled the Acer VOIP (which I didn't install in the first place!), but it keeps coming back, grrrr. I'm half tempted to open the case and cut out the wiring to that built in microphone. Major annoyance.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Nice one Acer, you have a major design fault with these built-in microphones. Just been doing a search on forum (and googling as well), and it seems other people have had the same problem, but there is no solution. Sucks.
