Hey... I've been considering buying a new laptop lately... been going back and forth on it for the past couple of weeks and I think the free upgrade for Vista has made my decision to buy one.

    Specs on it are:

AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50 Processor, 1GB RAM, 120GB Hard Drive, 14.1-inch WXGA TFT Display, 8X DVD+/-RW Drive, Windows XP Media Center 2005 - Max memory allowed is 4GB

Is this computer worth buying? How much better is an Intel Core 2 Duo processor than "AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-50 Processor"?

Should I consider buying something else because it's equipped w/ the AMD processor? I'm really looking to spend under $900... I've considered the Averatec 2300 which has similar specs to this computer... but also comes w/ the AMD processor.

I really need a fast computer to handle my audio production software... soundcard doesn't matter... I have an external professional audio-interface for that.

for $900 amd will kill an intel... it is very hard to get something with those specs and an intel chip.

from what i have read the intel does beat the amd, but bang for the buck amd wins.

I have seen the model you are looking at for $799 CDN at Future Shop.

Acer makes a model with similar specs and Core Duo for $200 more.

The integrated video on Intel chipsets is poor, the ATI chipset in the 5050 is one of the best integrated video chips. Also, the Atheros wifi solution in the 5050 is really good - I have grown to like Atheros more than Intel when it comes to WiFi. I have been experiencing problems with the Intel-based WiFi chips in the review units I have been getting lately. Atheros chips seem less picky about the router.

In terms of performance, if you care about SuperPi then sure the Intel system wins. Otherwise the two chips are close enough.
