I have had my 5100 for a few weeks, and yesterday it started a bizarre display problem. For no apparant reason, the LCD screen automatically dims. Whenever I try to increase the brightness, it resets to dim within a second or two. Throughout this problem, the laptop has been plugged in. The only way to fix it is to do a hard boot. Then it works normally for a while, but at random will decide to start dimming again.

I don't know if this is related, but I brought up the "Acer ePower Management" widget that comes with the computer. It comes up with the "Maximum Performance" Profile. It shows the LCD brightness at 0% which hardly sounds like maximum performance to me. When I try to increase this (either with the keys or dragging the slider) it resets to 0% and the screen dims again. Also, the CPU Speed is set to "medium" - again, hardly maximum performance. Whenever I try to increase this, it also resets to "medium" within a second or two.

Is this a defective laptop, or just some bizarre software conflict?

    Maybe uninstall/reinstall it.

The Acer eManagment is forcing the slider to 0 because you selected that profile. Just install the eManagment, its not needed.

I have the same dim screen problem with my two-month-old Acer Aspire 5100, however my screen is always dim and has always been dim. It also reflects light much more than my ex-Dell. I'm using an external monitor now - a Viewsonic VA703m which is clear, bright, colourful and non-reflective. The comparison is incredible! I was getting tired and strained peering at the dim laptop screen.

I'm interested to hear further suggestions on how to improve the quality of my display screen.

I've been modifying the Catalyst Control Centre - decreasing gamma, increasing brightness and contrast to little effect. Should I be dealing with this through the ePower management System?

I never have probles with my Acer profiles... but just in case, I'd like to know what causes it.

I have had my 5100 for several weeks now. Love it, but noticed the same thing happening after installing a scanner/printer. Disconnected the device and the problem went away. I haven't seen the problem reoccur for several days now.
    I hope this helps.

Try this folks. Open Acer ePower Management. Click on "advanced settings"(top right). Click "load defaults". Click "load".

This should reset everything in ePower Management to factory settings.

The same thing used to happen to my 5102. Changing the setting in Acer ePower Management made no difference, it would still dim the screen of its own accord.

This was one of the factors which contributed to me doing a full reinstall of Windows (a full proper version, not the Acer recovery disk). I didn't bother reinstalling Acer ePower Management and now cope perfectly well with the built-in Windows power management features.
