Good afternoon,
After using desktop computers all my life I am shopping for a laptop. I came across an Acer 5100-5022 w/ a dual core, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, DVD RW, 15.4 in. display for $789. If anyone is currently using this system are you happy with it? Any feedback would be appreciated.
Regards
JW

this computer sucks right out of the box, but with some research and tweaking with the laptop then it performs much better then $800 laptop

What items are in need of "tweaking" in your opinion??

I picked a 5102 up last week and have had no problems with it. Depsite all of the old posts, my notebook came with all the latest drivers (except BIOS). I didn't have to do much of anything except remove some things that I don't use.
I would recommend that you spend the extra bucks and get the model above that one. I.e. get the one with 2GB of Ram (5102WLMi has 2GB of Ram and a wide screen). -
Hi jw44,
I have absolutely the same laptop like yours and so far everything is fine. I just have one complaint that it's kinda slow and those 1GB of RAM doesn't satisfy me anymore. I am planning very soon to get something (also ACER) new but more powerful.
I have a question and I posted in Yahoo!Answers... Will you try to help me somehow with an answer, please!
Thank you!

If the Vista "upgrade" DVD's are the same as the ones I was sent for my 5102, they will either upgrade the MCE or do a straight, fresh Vista install. It would be wise to download and burn to CD all the drivers etc from the Acer support site first, though.
I've done about 4 different re-installs here, and also bought a second hard drive so that I can test with XP and Fedora for the audio issues (not confined to Acer) that I'm experiencing. With the original back-ups I burnt with MCE, plus the upgrade DVD's I seem to be able to re-install any way I like. If you keep the partitions the same, you don't lose the data on the second partition.
Once again, if anyone wants to try the simple tests to see if audio has this particular quirk, they are welcome to send me a private message through this forum, and I'll forward details. The tests just involve playing a file you can download and reporting what you hear. -
