    Hello.

I have just bought an Acer Aspire 5101, the cheapest version from the 5100 series. It comes with a Turion 64 mk-36 processor (@2GHz), 512MB of DDR2, ati x1100 video card, 60GB Seagate P-ATA hdd and Pioneer DVD-WR.

I'm quite pleased with my new toy, but there are a few things that worrie me:

First of all, there's the hdd. I don't know why, but it gets quite warm during operation. SpeedFan reads out a temperature in the range of 110*F(44C)...117*F(47C). I guess this isn't such a devastating temperature...i've heard of worse but still...it's annoying because the left side of the touchpad and the area next to it gets warm while i type.

Another issue is the optical drive. This is the first notebook that i own and my experience with these kind of machines isn't so great but i can tell when a noise is too loud. And my DVD-WR makes some noise while operating.

So...what do you think? Do i really have some problems with my notebook, or is it all in my head? Is my hdd running too hot, or is it ok (a "standard" feature of Acer Aspire 5100 series :p)? Should the dvd be completly silent?

Thanks for any advices and sorry for my not_so_good english.

Your hard disk is well within its themal envelope. Hard disks are designed to run at high temperatures, because that is what is required of them in a notebook. If the heat really is bugging you, then I recommend you get a cooling pad. They work great to reduce the temperature of the notebook, and also prolong the life of components, as they don't get as hot.

Generally, optical drives do make a lot of noise when running. It's is nothing to worry about, as long as it reads and writes DVD'/CD's okay.
