My wife's laptop has gone postal. It now takes forever to start Windows Vista Basic. Noticed some desktop icons are missing and it is extremely slow. Gives a black screen for a while, then a red one. Also gave an error message DCOM Windows Host error along with the one on the heading. Any ideas guys?

Not sure what that has to do with logging in but I would venture to guess either a virus or spyware.

Yeah I think ghaldos might be right here, you should definitely check for virus/malware. Though IMO, your best shot is to recover the laptop to the factory default settings using ether the recovery partition or recovery CDs.
