Hi, when I switch the power button on, I get the acer screen with 'Press <F2> to set up' at the bottom left of the screen and a message 'preparing to boot to OS' also at the bottom left of the screen. Then I receive a screen with the following message: 'Broadcom UNDI PXE-2.1 v10.0.9

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and
press any key'
What does it mean with boot disk and what to do?
By pressing F2 ,but i didn't found any information about the HDD there is "Not Installed" in this place. Do you know what i need to do. Also when i switch on my computer i hear sound coming like tak-tak.
How do I know if there are any loose or bad cable/connector going from the HD to the motherboard? Please help me. I got a lot of important data on the hard drive. I need some procedure on doing this. I'm open for help. ^o^
-
sounds to me like your HDD has failed.... hence the tak-tak sound and NOT INSTALLED showing up in the BIOS
try booting off of a CD or DVD that is BOOTABLE (disk 1 of the recovery disks you made)
the machine is trying to find data to load into the laptop's main memory..
when no hard drive is found.. and no CD/DVD is found... by default the notebook searches for a network connection to boot from...
there are no CABLES going to the HDD.. it has physical connections that should not come loose without removing a couple of screws that secure the HDD mounting bracket to the LAPTOP..
remove the BATTERY.. unplug the AC
open the HDD cover (small cover w/ 2 screw holes) remove cover...
check that the HDD is plugged in....
you should probably remove the 2 screws and totally remove the HDD
then re instert the HDD and replace the screws
try to boot up again -
The HDD is dead, it happened with me about 2 years ago....!!
I presume it might not show up in the BIOS as well..!!
Loose connectors - chances are slim to none, since the caddy is there to hold the drive in place..!!
Did you bang your laptop lately..?? -
if it shows up in bios, then change the setting to i think it said ide, i had the same error. when i changed it, it worked.
-
The hard drive doesn't show up in bios either.
I remove the two screws to the cover and open it up, BUT there is a caddy on top of it. I can't take the hard drive out. Do I have to open up the entire laptop? How do I do that?
A picture of how it look like when I open it up is below.
-
slide the caddy away from the connector
it just slides into place -
I am afraid that HDD is dead....the klik-klik sound means that the Drive is dying..!!
U would have to remove any screws the caddy is held with, and then lift the caddy and remove the hdd.... -
I think you should pull it out with the caddy, then unscrew the four screws to remove the caddy from the hdd..
-
Okay, I did it. I pull it out and put it back in. It still didn't work. ToT
There were just some rumors, have anyone tried freezing their laptop hard drive and putting it back in to see if it boot up. I think this may be my last resort. Although the rumors stated that it probably won't boot for long.
I'm just hoping that it'll boot long enough for me to saved all my important data first. If anyone tried this method and it work, please give me on directions.
Also, thank guys for answering my post. -
I'd recommend to buy a cheap usb enclosure and try it on a different computer..
-
You may try to connect the HDD with a USB enclosure or a USB to SATA/IDE cable....but there are 99.9% chances it wont work, since it has crashed..!! Search on google for guys who can retrieve data from broken HDDs, although they charge a lot..!! The more you use the HDD, the more difficult it will be to retrieve the data from it..!!
So would advise you to try out the external hdd thing once, and if it doesnt work, dont go about trying weird things as it will just increase the damage that has already been inflicted to it..!! -
i'm assuming it's under warranty... and the data is more important than the cost of a new drive....
if so you might consider professional data recovery before screwing things up
if the data isn't that valuable... you can try unconvetional means in attempt to save the data yourself...
but the whole idea behind using a freezer comes from the idea that different metals contract and expand depending on it's temps.... so by chaning the temp of the HDD you are hoping to free a stuck bearing or get the reaad/write arm moving.... it sounds like the drive is spinning.. and that tck sound could be the read/write head banging into the platter damaging more data w/ each sound.....
if you do try cooling the device
you should also wait until the device has returned to room temps and all condensation has evaporated.... or else you are taking a chance of shorting out the HDD which could easily result in damage to the MOTHERBOARD...
that would be a $200 mistake at the minium...
how much do you want to spend... -
I just wanted to ask. What kind of usb enclosure would I need for the Acer Aspire 5315-2153 laptop hard drive? Since it's different from my other laptop hard drive.
By usb enclosure, how do I put the hard drive inside it? Do I have to take the hard drive apart?
Oh, another problem. What kind of hard drives would work with my laptop model?
I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but please bear with me for a bit. -
just buy the cheapest USB SATA HDD enclosure... 2.5" size
just hook the HDD up to the connectors inside the enclouser
then plug it up to a working PC via the USB cable
pray it works...
if you take the HDD apart... it will never work again and you will likely loose data by exposing the DISK surface to the elements
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=2020&cpc=RECOM
you don't even need an enclouser... this cable works with IDE and SATA drives allowing data to be transfered thru USB -
I wanted to ask. What hard drive is compatible with my Acer Aspire 5315-2153? I'm planning on buying a new one. How do I know if it is compatible?
-
any SATA 2.5" HDD..
as long as it's a 2.5" drive with the SATA interface... you may wish to stick with SATA 1 or SATA150
the motherboard doesn't support SATA300 -
May I ask what is a SATA 1 and SATA150?
How do I know whether the hard drive is SATA1 or SATA150? -
Your laptop has a SATA-150 port....which is unofficially also known as SATA1
Even if you buy a SATA2 or SATA-300 HDD, it will be backward compatible with SATA1....!! -
What I mean is, how do I know that the hard drive I'm buying have SATA 150?
-
answer is... either read it's specifications from the manufacturer...
or don't worry about it.... because even newer drives should be backwards compatible,... in my experience anyway... -
Here a hard drive that I wanted to buy, can someone look at it and tell me that is it alright with my Acer Aspire 5315-2153.

Nope........that is an EIDE drive....!!
Look for SATA in the specs..!! -
So the hard drive on this page
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Western%20Digital/WD1200BEVS/
is okay with my laptop?
Will it fit into my laptop? I don't know much about specs. -
yeah, the 5315 comes up with a SATA port on google, so it must be having a SATA port....!! If so go for that one..
Maybe BigO can clarify.. -
Thanks "angad1608"for the help. If there are anymore problems with my Acer, I know a reliable person to ask from. Thanks again ^-^
I'll post more questions if I have them. -
that drive should work fine...
i think i'd go with this one myself

$7 more for hitachi.... i'm just not big on WD notebook drives -
I'd go for hitachi too, I hate my WD..
