    Hi,
I'm new here, glad to join.
I've been reading the forums, but can't find this issue anywhere. Here's what is happening.
I have an Acer Aspire 5315 laptop, which is just over a year old. A few weeks ago, it powered off suddenly. I tried to power it back on, but it wouldn't. I tried booting it with/without the battery and AC adapter, but no luck. The power light does not come on, and fans do not turn on. However, the battery charging light was unaffected, and still turned from amber to green when the battery finished charging.
Then, a few days later, I pulled the battery out and left it out of the laptop overnight, and when i put it back in in the morning, the laptop powered on again.
But - after a couple hours of running fine again, the laptop shut off suddenly again, and wouldn't turn back on. I got it running again after 10 minutes of fiddling around.
Since it was on again, I shut it down using windows and it turned off normally, and powered back on first try. I tried this several times and it always powered back on first try when it was properly shut down using windows. At this point, I assumed everything was good to go, but the laptop shut down again suddenly and I haven't been able to get it turned on again for 2 days now.
Even when the laptop won't start, the battery still charges using the AC adapter; I can tell from the LED on the front of the laptop.
Does anyone know what would be causing this to happen?

There is no easy cure , send it to ACER for inspection .

Thanks for the reply, but I'm currently too broke to send it into Acer, so that's not an option.
I know that if I keep trying, I can get it to start up again, since I've done it several times already. I'm really just curious what it could possibly be. I know it's not a fried motherboard, since I've gotten it to start up again so many times since the first time it died.
    What could it possibly be?
    Any ideas are welcomed.

Maybe it's overheating. My ex-5315 had the very same issues when it overheats. You should clean the vents and I think that this would be enough to fix it. It worked for mine.

OK an interesting update. I left the battery out for three days, and when I replaced it an hour ago the laptop started working! Windows started right up.
But- it died again 45 minutes later. I watched what happened closely: First the monitor shut off. 1 second later the fans and hard drive shut down. Kind of made a clicking sound.
What would be the best way to clean the vents? Should I use an air compressor at a gas station to clean them out? Or do the cans of air work better?
I've noticed that there have been a couple other 5315's with similar problems recently, so maybe we can put our heads together and solve this thing.

The best way to clean your fan and the cooling fins is to remove the cover from the back of the laptop. Then remove the fan from the motherboard and use can of air to gently blow out the dust from the cooling fins and gently blow out the fan as well. If you use too high of air pressure you can cause fan damage by spinning it too fast increasing chance of possible damage to the bearing of the fan. I know from experience that my 5315 requires the fan and cooling fins cleaned monthly due to the fact that my laptop runs 24/7. It might be a over heat problem, or it could be a battery issue as the battey is fairly old and depending on the number of charging cycles it may have developed a shorted cell in the battery. Just something else to consider. When you get it running again try removing the battery with the ac power attached and see if it will recreate the same issues. That will rule out a battery issue and show if it is a overheating issue. Also install speed fan and use it to monitor the CPU temps to see where they sit at idle. That will show if it is overheating. Good luck and hope this helps.

    ummm...

Hope all is well. You could also try taking devices out and the memory (keeping static to 0) and seeing if power will work. Replace each and retry.

Try running from a live CD as drivers may be an issue but then not working for days is an issue.

If stable try BIOS update but ensure stable.
If laptop is prevented from booting to OS on harddrive (using say LiveCD) and issue remains then probable hardware and unsafe to upgrade BIOS as could fail.

    Thanks for the helpful replies.
    UPDATE Time.
I got the 5315 running and pulled out the battery, and it still shut itself off 30 seconds later, so it being a battery issue has officially been ruled out.
    It's got to be overheating.
In fact, when the laptop is turned on, I don't think that the fan is turning on at all! I don't feel it moving any air, at least. So I will take apart the computer and try cleaning out the fan.
I have heard of issues with the fan not turning on after waking the computer on standby(after turning off emanagement software), but this is happening to me from a cold boot.. very interesting.
I shall try running it in the freezer and see if I can keep it from heating up long enough to install SpeedFan.
    Any other thoughts are welcomed!

can you get your hands on a cooling pad ?

ive just been running a temp test on my 5735z. at idle 45c,using flight sim top temp both cores 68c, then i switch on my cooling pad temps went from 68c to 35c in just under 2mins.
    so cooling pads work :D

    i used this http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

I have the same issue thats happend with 2 laptops in the past. the 5315 aspire. Its not an over heating problem as i can get a working 5310 to charge the battery and put it into a non working one with a CHARGER IN PUT PROBLEM and it works fine. The laptop looks like its charging but heres whats happening

With a full battery the laptop works fine untill the battery is run dry. The charger in the laptop even though u get the charger light isn't doing anything.

I'm waiting on some parts to see if i can resolve this problem. When i find out I will be back

signed up to let you know i think i know the freaking problem, the issue we are facing with our acer 5315 are due to facts involving the following issues

    1. you need to clean your internal fan, open acer and clean it
    2. thermal paste ! needs to be changed ! open and clean old paste, replace with new
    3. charger is half broken, needs to be replaced, this is the hardest for me to explain, im really not sure how to explain, it has something to do with the screwed battery not being constantly charged if the charger cable is broken somewhere, for example for 2 hours your laptop could be running fine using the charger and battery together working fine, but it just suddenly shuts down, this can be related to the acer battery going dead in over 5 minutes if you just use the battery without the charging, the reason acer 5315 shuts down like this is really the thermal paste issue and the faulty charger and battery,

so the main things to change are the following, thermal paste, charger cable, and if you can battery, i'm still using my screwed up battery, it still works so i really assume the problem is related with the y broken cable from the charger and thermal paste being to old something like that, i have now changed the thermal paste added enough thermal paste to keep it cold, cleaned the fan, and restarted it.

now as i write this, my laptop is around 56'c tmp, the keyboard area feels normal, not to cold not to hot, im running a timer on how long laptop stays online, its already been 01:10:50sec so you can assume it would run like normal,

    thats about it.
my laptop runs just like normal now its already going over 1 hour and heavy duty games, and videos, etc are running normal

just remember, the problem is the stupid charger, the screwed battery, and the thermal paste ! replace and it will work again :)

    and yes ACER really blows

forgot to mention, DONT PUT THE LAPTOP ON YOUR BED YOU NOOB IT WILL OVER HEAT LIKE THAT

good air flow ! i noticed after years of having this laptop the rubber molds will come out underneath the acer those rubber molds need to be replaced to provide good airflow on tables etc,
