Right, so i have an Acer Aspire 5315, and i am thinking of upgrading it soon.
The things i would upgrade are the RAM, which i know is easy, as i have done it before in laptops, but i would also want to upgrade the CPU. This is something i have never done before, and i have a few questions (yes i have read the sticky)

Will upgrading the cpu void the Warranty?

If i buy a cpu, will it come with a fan + heatink and the screws or what?

Where is the best place to buy a core 2 duo cpu in the UK? (NOT ebay please)

Also i have a few questions about cpus in general. I take it that a T5450 which is 1.66ghz will greatly out perform the 1.73 ghz celeron it has in here at the moment?

I have been finding the celeron VERY slow for video encoding, so what is the best cpu i can get for a reasonable price that will working the 5315 (i.e. MAX £100)

    Thanks

I don't know what is the warranty policy in UK but..
No, if you keep the original processor, and you don't left any traces when opening/closing the laptop. And if you have to return the laptop for repair, you have to put the old processor back. Otherwise yes.

No. Why you need other fan and heatsink anyway?

    Correct.

New CPUs are pretty expensive..I bought mine from ebay(yeah I know you said no ebay) no problem so far..

i've bought 3 CPUs off EBAY-us site... no problems out of any of them.... all are working different ACERS right now!!!

you just need to buy from a seller w/ a LONG HISTORY and a GREAT REPUTATION... i also suggest the BUY IT NOW option...

i have no clue about € prices... but T5450s can be bought in US on ebay for less than $80us,,, and a T7300 or T8100 or T8300 would be excellent upgrades... i want the T8300 myself....

upgrading should not void your warranty unless you do something to casue damage durring the install... BTW this is the easiest laptop i have ever seen to upgrade... 11 screws and the CPU is out....

you reuse the factory heatsink and screws... it would be wise to buy some ARTIC SILVER 5 heatsink compound to replace the factory stuff,, but not required.. i'm reusing the factory PASTE on all the laptops i've upgraded

upgrading to 2gig of ram will amaze you too.... hope that answers your ???'s
hoggie may stop in later and have advice on a UK cpu source

    good luck,

    bigO

SO i assume the old ones will work with a new cpu from what bigO,the reason i was asking is because i am a total newb at these things.

Anyway thanks for your help both of you, and all i really need to know now is a good place to buy them in the uk, though i suppose i could go with ebay if i really had to... Btw, ~£40 ($80) for the T5450 sounds really good, but i migh go for something a bit higher.

Oh yeah one more question, would i have to upgrade my bios or whatever cos its at 1.18?

i would do it even if not required....

    support.acer-euro.com

if version 1.42 is not on that site yet, i'd download ver 1.33,,, 1.34 and 1.40 have had a few little issues... 1.33 is a good version...

the NEW BIOS has better support for newer CPUs and better cooling routines than the old bios along with various other fixes....

    bigO

BTW just download and do the flash using the WINDOWS FLASH
no need to worry with the old DOS flash since the BIOS CHIP is a new style

there is a link in the STICKY about flashing BIOS,,, just see inside POST #1 of the ACER 5315 CPU UPGRADE thread at the top of the ACER forum

Yep you can use the old ones no problem.

Probably yes(99%), you have to upgrade the bios in my opinion..

this has been the main problem. the easiest answer it find a usa seller willing to ship to the uk.
most retailers in the UK don't stock mobile cpu's. even pc world will not help you :(

but there are a few German sellers/outlets but not all will ship to the uk and they ramp-up the price when they see a uk address. :(

Just take out the 4 screws. Then, very carefully pry off the cover. There are some tabs that keep it in place and it is a little dificult to get it off. Why the heck they made it that tight is beyond me.
