    Acer Aspire 5315 big trouble

    My sons Acer just kinda quit. No empowering technology,start-up programs disabled, cannot get to system restore, will not go on internet. Although we can get on windows vista without a problem. Any help would be appreciated. Would like to avoid going back to factory setting if at all possible. Thanks

    More info please. Any programs installed recently, including those downloaded from the internet? Have you tried a virus scan, online or otherwise. Have you tried turning startup programs back on using msconfig?

    It has norton 360 but will not let me open up the program. Nothing new was downloaded from internet but I did install a printer a couple days before this. Seemed to act funny then. Have not tried msconfig. I'm not a computer wizard but I'm trying all possible things I can before paying a professional. If someone can tell me what needs to be done I usually can figure it out. Thanks

    If you can, try and download and install malwarebytes on the laptop. This is a very good free program which can get rid of infections on your computer. Also, spybot search and destroy.

    Also, try and run the computer in safe mode, (F8 on start), and see if you can do a system restore from there.

    Judging by the symptoms,it sounds like a virus or spyware, so a spybot scan, a malwarebytes scan (as stated above), and then posting a hijackthis log would help us out. Also, if you could try enabling your startup items in msconfig, that would let us know if you can turn on Norton or not. Norton 360 could also be causing your problem because of a bad update. I've seen Norton block internet access before, though I'm not sure about startup items.
