Hi everyone
I'm new to the forum and this is my first post.
I have an 2 year old Acer Aspire 5315. I upgraded the ram a couple of months ago to 2 mb. The laptop worked fine afterward and continued to do so until yesterday. When I tried to start up it got as far as loading Win Vista then just shut down, a total power off. I checked all the power connections, I was plugged into the mains at the time, and all seemed fine. When I tried to restart the power came on for a few seconds then shut down again and only showed a black screen.
Since then I have tried taking out the battery, pressing the off button for 60 seconds, reconnected the power cord then replaced the battery. If you press the start button it runs for 3 seconds then powers off. The fan runs during this period but stops when it powers off. On the odd occcasion it boots and loads Vista. In the couple of minutes it is on the battery life shows as 1 hour and no other problems are flagged up. Everything looks normal but then it just powers off. Then we are back to the 3 second runs with just a black screen.
Has anyone come across this before?
Regards
John
Hi
An update to the problem. After leaving it charging for a couple of hours I tried to start it again. This time I pressed F2 on startup and got into bios. However bios appeared frozen because none of the controls worked. After a period of time similar to booting into Vista it just shut down and would not reboot at all. I know if I leave it for an hour I will be able to go through the process again.
Does this mean anything to the experts out there?
Regards

Last time I saw symptoms like that it was the mobo dying- BGA chipset was separating from the mobo itself when the notebook got hotter and PCB expanded.
It doesnt have to be that but looks suspiciously similar... -
Thanks downloads
I've had that suggested in another forum. I tried swapping Ram but it made no difference. Then it was suggested that I removed the hard drive and then switch on. When I did this the same happened it powered up but went no further stayed like that for 10 seconds then switched off. The conclusion was a dead motherboard. The only Mobos available cost £150 so a repair doesn't seem economic.
I found a repairer who offers to test and advise for free so I've taken it to him. I will let the forum know the outcome.
