well the only thing i did was upgrade the bios, windows recognized the processor automatically but i reinstalled windows on the first processor swap just in case if there was any issue from going from a single core to a dual, and the last time i only swapped it

so try to upgrade the bios, perhaps that fixes the problem

well just go into the web page of the manufacturer (acer, emachines you name it) and go to the drivers page of you model and look for the bios update, note that you have to use the laptop that you are going to upgrade so you are going to swap the old processor back for it to work again

by the way just of curiosity what laptop are you going to upgrade just to be sure that you are using the right kind of processor

and to reinstall windows just use the dvd that you got when you bought the computer or create some recovery disks

I have a aspire 5532 and ive been trying everything to get these processors to work. :(

first i tried the TL-60 TMDTL60HAX5DM (65nm i think) and that hanged at the windows screen.

then i bought the TL-56 TMDTL56HAX5DC 65nm and the bios didnt even boot up

now im buying the TL-56 90nm to see if it will work because this is my last time buying a processor for this computer hopefully it works this time

Ok I got this done the next morning but forgot to reply. I hadn't locked in the processor haha, stupid mistake.

Anyways I saw somewhere that the TL-60 is easily overclocked to 2.3GHz, how can I overclock it? And how can I check my CPU temps?

well i overclocked my processor up to 2.8 ghz (a tl 66 2.3 by the way) but windows gave me a BSD when i started the windows experience, so i experimented and i got to 2.6 ghz with very rare errors or crashes (some apps not windows) but the temp was ok with no or little load, but doing the windows experience it went as high as 90 c on hw monitor, but it didn't feel too hot to the touch, i ran Bad Company 2 and it gave a little more fps but not so many to be really usable and after 2 hours the game crashed

but if you want to experiment i used the program called Setfsb and used the clock slg8lp625t and i just dragged the bar to the desired speed (click the get clock button first)

the thing i actually want to overclock to see if it's worth it is the igp (radeon 3200), i think that overclocking it and using the copper mod to cool it (the mod basically is to remove the thermal pad and use a sheet of copper and thermal compound to cool it more efficiently) it could give far better results in games so it can be a little closer to a gaming laptop (not too close but better than nothing)

i tried some apps to overclock it but i have not yet had any luck but one program i think it was able to overclock the memory but the core it had weird readings and it made windows lag and give the BSD after a while

oh by the way im glad to hear that Silver112 finally got his laptop up and running and too bad that you had to use 2 bad cpu's before you got a working one

I'm having trouble overclocking my eme627 laptop. I have upgraded it with a tl-58 and 4gb of ram.

I was already messing around in RMclock lowering the voltage. I haven't run any long term stability test but I was able to get down from the 1.1v to .95v no problems. Temperatures only dropped 5-6C under load tho.

My problem: In setfsb I'm using the SLG8LP625T clock generator. <--- That's the right one? I tried moving the bar with no luck?!? No matter what I do I can't overclock it. I turned off RMclock, but that wasn't the problem. I've seen other people say they have overclocked this computer. Would a bios update possibly help?

    Thanks.

well i have the latest bios and i had no problem overclocking the processor i used that same clock generator, i clicked get fsb, then set the desired one and then just click set fsb, perhaps you need to update the bios and then give it a try

    Hi.

I recently purchased a TL-60 processor for my Acer 5532-5146 which came with an Athlon TF-20.

Once the processor'll get to replace him and I'll post details here.

    Hugs.

I sucessfully upgraded my 5516 to a Tl-60 and 4 gigs of ram, but the gaming graphics score still suck (3). Is there any way I can get more out of the x1200

No , there is no way to upgrade the graphics on that computer. You can't turn it into a gaming machine only improve it by what you have done.
I'm thinking of upgrading to the tl 60 from a tl 56 that i put in a month ago. I wonder if it is worth it or noticable.
Anybody got any thoughts on this.
    thanks in advance.

    Hi Folks,

I have a 5517 with 2gb RAM, 250gb hdd. I got the gonads to disassemble the laptop from a Newegg post, and from Seer on here. Honestly, I appreciate the breakdown of the disassembly that was earlier in this thread, but it's not hard to google the factory disassembly instructions that is very specific on how to do this.

I used some copper from Home Depot in the plumbing aisle to shim the GPU, and used some aluminum (it was thinner) to shim the other component that was on the heatsink bar (I think the voltage regulators?) and now my temps are as follows...

    TL-60

    Idle=50c

    Prime95'd CPU = 61c
    GPU= +5c from above.

I will be upgrading the RAM next to 4gb.

What a steal! You guys rock for showing us that all this is possible.

PS I am using RMclock and an earlier version of SetFSB to get the laptop to undervolt to .85v (I had some unexpected shutdowns with .8) and top out with 1.1v with the fsb to 2.3 ghz max.

    I Replaced TF-20 processor by TL-60.
In 3DMark2001 increased from 5300 to 5600 3DMarks, little improvement.
    In SuperPi with 1M, doing 44s (TL-60) before doing 58s (TF-20).
I expected a greater improvement in video.

any suggestions on how to get the LCD off? I removed the two screws on the base for each side and it will not budge at all.. I am at wits end and don't want to break anything.

UPDATE: well now. the eMachines E625 you have to remove the two case screws on each corner..

so what do we think is compatible overall? i tried a tl-60 and couldn't boot. got a tl-50 and that booted fine. 1.09 bios. could be a bad cpu i guess but i'm thinking there is more to it than that since way too many of us have reports of them not booting. i would really like to upgrade to a tl-60 as my processor just doesn't keep up. i think it may be the nuked cache, but it could also be the clock speed.

is only taylor (tl-50) and tyler (tl-* 65nm) compatible with the 5517? has anyone with 1.09 bios and a 5517 successfully gotten a tl-60 to work and if so which model. the 90 nm or 65 nm?

i need to get some extra performance out of this as source games (while they run well at times) some times hiccup and when they do it's pretty bad. like 5 seconds of freezing before the game catches up with itself. this is not overclocked either, so it's not just instability. i'm thinking it's mostly the cache, but if i have to upgrade i might as well get it as far as possible. so what's your biggest upgrade on the 5517?

I tried this SetFSB and it did work quite well,as foretold.

There is only one issue I'm not quite comfortable with:When I OC the FSB,the freq. of my RAM is pushed beyond the rated max specification.Only by a little, but should I be concerned about this?

If I add another 2GB stick, will that keep the frequency below max rated?

My specs until I get into the UCP:

MS Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    ACER Aspire 5517-5427
    AMD Athlon TF-20
    2GB DDR2 Max Bandwidth PC2-5300 (333 MHz)
    ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics
    WDC WD2500BEVT-22A23T0 ATA Device

It needed to be done. . . so I did it :D I just wasted the last hour and fifteen minutes of my life disassembling and reassembling an aspire 5517 to see if it would boot an s1g2 processor. No luck  I attempted to replace my stock TF-20 (s1g1) with an RM-72 (s1g2). It wouldn't post. I registered just to clear this up for anybody wanting to swap CPU's from craptops lying around. I'd spent a ridiculously long time looking this up online only to find a bunch of conflicting answers and a lot of "I don't know" and "SHOULD work" B.S. :( I ultimately had to bite the bullet and try it for myself. I hope this helps the next person who looks into it. I'm waiting for a buddy to bring me a TL-60 and a TL-66. I'll try them both and let you guys know how it went. :GEEK:

    Bump!
I just want to know if a TMDTL60HAX5DC is compatible with my Acer 5517 and if anyone has a working instance of it running.
Also for the heat sink and putting on the thermal paste. Should when i remove the heat sink clean both the contact on the heat sink and the cpu top with rubbing alcohol and apply the thermal paste. I just saw it on another site and wanted to clarify. One more thing so before I install the new cpu I should upgrade my bios from the manufacture website? Thanks a bunch!!!!!

Well I answered my own questions this time. The model: TMDTL60HAX5DC is compatible with my acer 5517. I am currently running it right now at 42 & 43 degrees C. The improvement from that dinky 1.6ghz processor is so amazing. Right now its alot smoother and snappier. Best $9 I ever spent on my life for a used processor from ebay.

I also wanted to thank the people of this thread/forums without your guy's comments, guides, and general just useful information when it comes to disassembly of my laptop. Without your guys help I would of been a goner.

    Thanks again!

Hey forum, I'm wanting to do the same thing, I'm tired of a measly 1.20 GHz! I would like to buy the AMD Turion TL-64 but I noticed that the Thermal Design Power watts is 22 watts higher than the supposedly outgoing Athlon L310. So does a bigger TDP cause harm to my beautiful, ized Hackintosh or will I have to buy a new computer and start all over again?

The only 64bit hardware is CPU or to be more precise the fact that it does or does not support 64bit instructions.
As far as I remember these use Athlon 64 CPUs- in which case you can install 64bit Windows.

Technically yes but only technically because motherboard does not support 64bit instructions as such- it only supports a CPU that does support 64bit instructions.
So if a CPU is 64bit- the whole thing is.

A different thing to keep in mind- 64bit Win XP is crap and 64bit Win 7 might not have all the drivers available for your machine considering its age.
So make sure that all the drivers are available.

This machine will most likely go the open source os route. A cpu upgrade is possible, except for knowing which one to get. I've read older comments that the TL-60 chip worked fine. There are now newer chips that might be compatible. Are there any updated cpu compatibility guides. Also there is the question of how much heat and/or wattage will the new chip create and use.

    Need some help here...

Upgraded the processor per the OP's step by step photos. Maxed out the RAM to 4GB, put it all back together and booted it up. Machine starts, I hear the Windows start sound and nothing on the screen. I can hook up an external monitor and everything seems to be working fine, except the screen.

Any ideas? I've reseated all the connections, the white and black wires, etc, and still nothing. When I had it hooked up to the external and did a reboot, I could see the Acer logo on the laptop screen but it was very very faint - like the contrast was all the way down, but adjusting that does nothing.

    running out of ideas...

    Thanks

If the screen is actually showing a picture, as you say it is, but is dim, this means you've possibly forgotten to reconnect your display cable to the motherboard correctly. It connects both the inverter and carries the display signal to the screen. The inverter is a little step up transformer board that provides the 300 - 1,200V needed to light the backlight. 1,200V is needed for the split second the lamp needs to light and stay lit, then around 300V to 500V thereafter.

The cable you need to check is the one nearest the left hinge. Remove your power panel, then the keyboard, and you'll see it. If it is seated correctly, the cable may have been pinched and been damaged. See my below picture which I obtained from the OFFICIAL Acer factory service manual.

    Acer-5516-display-connector.jpeg

Can you conform that you *didn't* take the actual screen assembly apart? I service a lot of laptops in my company so can get you the official factory manual if you'd like to rebuild it to factory standard? I don't like amateur guides, they are often inexperienced people that mislead.

BTW, just got one of these and was exploring possible upgrades. Reading this thread it looks like I should be okay with a cheap TL-66 (Thanks all, for your experiments!) from eBay.

I happened to have two sticks of 4GB DDR2 (8GB total) in another laptop (HP Dragon), so I tested it in the Acer 5517 and it booted just fine. BIOS reports all 8GB.

So, another little upgrade possiblity for you. Thought I'd share, since I learned so much from this thread.

    Aloha.

I just wanted to post and support rogue_ronin's post in that my Acer 5517 also took 8GB via 2 sticks of DDR2 (4GB each) with the standard BIOS without any issue. So the 8GB memory along with the Turion CPU upgrade does a lot to make this old budget laptop much better.
