I was using my Laptop when all of a sudden the screen went off. I can use it with an external TV, but if you shine a light on the screen you can see the picture very feint.

Has anyone had this problem and if so what is it and can it be fixed?

    Hi,

your backlight went bad. I am not sure if you can get a replacement backlight separately, of you need to replace the entire display.

I think it will be cheaper to buy a new laptop rather than replace the screen.

It won't be cheaper but it may make more sense- it's up to you.
You can buy an LCD for your notebook for like $90 on ebay.
