So guys i just bought myself a brand new Acer Aspire 5630 from Futureshop for 1199.99. For those who dont kow the specs here they are.

    Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005; Intel® Core™ Duo Processor T5500 (2MB L2 cache, 1.66GHz, 667MHz FSB); 1GB (512/512) DDR2 533 SDRAM; 160GB SATA hard drive, 5400RPM; integrated Super-Multi drive (DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD-RAM); 5-in-1 card reader; 15.4" WXGA (1280 x 800) TFT display, Acer® CrystalBrite Technology; NVIDIA® GeForce® Go 7300 graphics; six-cell lithium ion battery; 802.11a/b/g WLAN, Bluetooth®, 10/100 LAN, V.92 modem; Acer® OrbiCam camera.

Its great best laptop i've ever had coming from a Compaq V2000, may post some pics if you guys want. But I have a question its has the Nvidia Gefore Go 7300 now i noticed that the drivers were an old version. So i tried to update them, i downloaded like every driver on Nvidia's site and every time its said that you have no compatible hardware. So I was wondering if you guys could point me to some drivers that are compatible. Now i dont knowif maybe its because the computer is running Media Center 2005 so... Oh by the way the current driver version is 8.4.8.5 and is dated 6/12/2006. so if you guys could help that be great.

Also the specs say bluetooth well no bluetooth in the laptop. Don't know why?

Thanks for the quick response i already tried those ones from the Nvidia Site not gonna try the Acer sites ones because i did some more digging and found custom ones based on the newest drivers at NGOHQ.com that work great. And in repsponse to the others i try to get on the benchmarks as soon as possible.

If you want any picture i took some, and any other benchmarks i have Counter Strike: Source and Battlefield 2141 among numerous other games, hope those results make you happy. Just ask if you want any other benchmarks done. So far its the best $1200 i've ever spent (being 15).

    Hi,
I just have some questions about this laptop as I'm thinking of buying it too. How loud is the fan when the laptop is running and does the laptop heat up fast when it is on for long periods of time?
    Thanks

I have the 5633 and whilst I was getting rid of some of the bloat yesterday and installing the software that I wanted on the laptop (I had the highest settings for cpu etc... whilst doing this) it stayed fairly cool throughout. This was over a period of about 1hour 30mins. :)

I just bought the 5630 myself and am quite pleased with the purchase. It doesn't recognize a dual layer blank DVD that I bought for backups though...any resources out there that you guys can point me to?

Couple things i have to say since i've had it,
Microsoft Windows Vista RC2 X64 is a no no, there are no Gfx drivers thats work and eventually caused hardware failure (that was resovled by installing Xp again).
Games run well enough World of Warcraft, everything on high steady 40fps (1280x800)

Counter Strike: Source, everything high but shadows 30-55fps (1280x800)

Battlefield 2142 seemed to run smooth on med (except when under and exploding car lol) lagged sometimes on high (too frequently) (1024x768)

Keep in mind i got rid of all the acer bloatware, but so far im very please. Although i find the exterior paint isn't very durable. I can take some pics of the laptop if anyone would like just ask.

Purchased the 5630-6803 this morning and have been playing/installing all day.

For those of you (like me) who like to re-partition the hard drive your own way and re-install Windows (in my case XP Pro) from clean, note that you need to have an XP Pro install disc that already includes SP2, otherwise the setup will crash before it has a chance to start copying files.

So far my major complaint about the laptop is that the keyboard is much worse than I thought from playing with it in the store. If you are a touch typer, this keyboard will take some getting used to, as even if the key is pressed, it doesn't always register. Very annoying. Maybe I'll get used to it. (I've owned and used heavily about 10 laptops in my life - I'm talking in comparison to these other ones).

Does anyone know where I can download the driver from the little webcam thing? What about the driver for the volume (and other) buttons on the right?

    Thanks!

Not cool. Approx 2 hours, 4000mAh. I may look into purchasing a higher capacity battery and that means, the battery that came with it may collect dust.

One of the reason I picked this laptop was because of the low energy consumption of Centrino and hoping that I can use the laptop longer on battery. But with the 2 hours battery life, its defeating the purpose.

I picked up one of these machines at the weekend, an Aspire 5633. Spec's include 1 gb ram, 120 gb hard drive, duo core intel centrino 1.66g.hz, etc.
It ran google earth just fine but when it came to playing DVD's there was a problem. The DVD's are jerky despite changing the settings to DMA and as for the DVD speech, its crackly and poor.
Any ideas as to the problem, the machine is a decent spec and it will be hard to find an equivalent at the price I paid. Comet vouuchers have a 13% discount at Virgin and I also managed to get the price knocked down to £570 to match the web price.

Fixed the jerky DVD problem out, probably caused by a scratched DVD and a smart windows reset. It is now on proper DMA ( www.winhlp.com/wxdma.htm) good site click on it and it auto resets your machine.
Goodness, am i one happy bunny now this machine is fantastic. Can watch all my ballet DVD's now - wonderful.

Has anyone managed to resolve the bluetooth issue? I recently brought an Aspire 5634WLMi (similar specs to the 5630, except that the processor is a Core2 Duo T5600, 1.83GHz), and it has the same problem. There doesn't seem to be any bluetooth hardware in the unit.

I got my Acer Aspire 5634 WLMi just after the christmas, two weeks in the use i am very pleases :) with it. this is my third laptop and is a huge step up to me from PIII in my old Toshiba Satellite to Core2Duo T5600. Problem
I have the same problem with the bluetooth device in my machine, i have tried to connect with my bluetooth capable cellphone, and found no device. There is no bluetooth in this model what so ever, despite all the dedicated bluetooth button and software installed in the system. No sure does it have it in the 5635 model with the T7200 chip?

The Aspire 5635 does have integrated bluetooth, and a Core2Duo T7200 processor, but those are the only differences, unless you actually need the faster machine, it's better to get a USB bluetooth adaptor, despite the inconvenience.

hey guys im new here but having some problems with my new acer 5633wlmi, so deserately hoping somone else with one can help...

as far as i can see the its got a dvd writingdrive, but im not hugely computer literate so i could have been wrong when i looked at the specs...but it wont write to blank dvds, it registers ive put a blank disk in and offers to burn with nero (i have nero 6), but gets to the end and tells me the disk brn process failed.

i also noticed that if i put a blank dvd in, and then g to my computer and right click the dvd drive (e) and check prperties, it tells me theres no free space on the disk. It doesnt do the same thing with blank cds, with them it says theyre empty and theres free space.

having looked in the properties of the e drive it tells me its cd-r... does anyone know which this is? and if it s a dvd drive have you managed to successfully write any dvds?

    thanks so much

The 5634 at Comet seems a good laptop but it was slighty over my budget and the spec is a bit over kill for my needs. I have found at www.shopacer.co.uk a 5633AWLMi LX.AG50J.169 which is a excellent spec for the cash (£569.00).

I have an acer 5630-6895. I got some questions. I tried burning that recovery disc. I burned it on 2 dvd's. I also tried burning this dvd for a game. It turns out that disc 2 of the recovery works, and the game and the 1st disc of the recovery. All I get is, 0 free space on the disc, it doesn't read anything. Is it just the disc or is there something wrong with my drive? I've tried watching a dvd movie on it, it works fine, like that.

Also my notebook has a little circle and in the manual it says that's a infared reciever which is only on certain models. Does that mean it works for mine? I mean, could I update the bios for the 5630? Then get some infared support and use something like an xbox controller for controlling media center?

used the supplied NT CD maker without any problems but im used to nero so installed that. NT CD maker is a good program for ripping audio from a music cd, as with nero you have to download extra plug-ins which will cost you if u don't know where to look. lol

I would say stay away from unbranded cheap discs from past experiences as they can tend to jump or make anoying ticking noise especially if u burn cds at a high speed. I have been using Verbaram and sony discs and have had no trouble.

p.s. im very pleased with Acer 5630 laptop and comend www.shopacer.co.uk for there efficient service! :)

    Hi all,
I have just bought an Acer 5630-6018 from Future Shop last week. Ever since I started using it, I have noticed that the DVD drive is really loud during the spin. You can easily hear the spinning sound, like a helicopter, especially when it was reading the disc like playing a DVD movie. In fact, the noise is almost as loud as the audio, so it is almost not enjoyable watching the movie at all. Have tried different kind of discs, so I am sure it is the drive. Anyway, the drive is a Pioneer. Does anyone have the same problem? Is this normal for this drive? Pls advise. Thanks all for any comments.

    Regards,
    TLO

Has anybody else tried what Pericolo1 said about upgrading the BIOS and solved the Bluetooth problem?

I bough an Aspire 5634 some weeks ago. At the first power on the bluetooth light (the blue one) was on. Then it started with the automatic installation of the Windows, drivers, patches, etc... and at the end the bluetooth light was off and it didn't turned on again :-(

I suspect that during all these things the Acer does in the first power on it patched the BIOS to disable the Bluetooth device (maybe Acer don't want this model to have bluetooth for a commercial reason, who knows...).

Has anybody else tried upgrading the BIOS? I still don't want to do it myself :-(

debbie, what's the exact model of your laptop? Mine is 5634WLMi.

And this morning I have seen a 5634WLMi in a shop. I have touched the bluetooth button and the blue light has turned on!

did you notice if the bluetooth front light was on the first time you power on the laptop?

Yea, Counterstrike on High Settings (maybe highest, but you will notice a large dip in FPS). Battlefield 2142 can run medium-low settings, but Auto Detect is best for FPS/Best setting quality performance.

What do you mean with the problem is solved? Have you bought a bluetooth adaptor? Otherwise, what have you done?

I have an Acer Aspire 5630-6992 which I got for my birthday two weeks ago. I can't get Bluetooth to work either. It says 'no devices' when I push the button. I desperately want to get it to work! I don't want to have to shell out $50 for one of those USB Bluetooth receiver things.
    Has anyone figured it out?

I just got an Aspire 5630 6966 with Windows Vista Home Premium and I got a few questions:

1.) I can not figure out how to get Acer to turn off the wire and wireless adapters when I set it to go Sleep or Close the lid. The screen goes off, but the activity lights for both adapters and the Power Indicator remain on. I try using the Acer ePower Management and setting the adapters under device manager to allow the computer to turn them off, but no dice. My other two laptops (IBM ThinkPad and Area 51) turn off their adapters when they go into sleep mode or when I close the lid. All I have to do is either hit the Fn key or move the mouse to wake them up.

EDIT: Fix it. The problem was related to the Advanced Power Settings for Multimedia. When Sharing Media -> Allow Computer to Sleep - After reading other threads around the net, some folks are reporting that one sources of this problem might be the drivers of some communication adapters not getting along with Vista and Power Management. Some folks have even solve the problem by regressing to earlier drivers.

2.) This laptop came "supposedly" equipped with a Core 2 Duo Processor T5300 1.73GHz. (It says so on the box, the sticker on the palmrest and on the specs I found online and in the store I bought it) BUT, the BIOS, the Device Manager and the Performance Information tool report the laptop as having a Core 2 Duo T5500 1.66GHz. I'm afraid that I might not be able to fix this without a BIOS upgrade. The laptop came with BIOS 3.50 installed. Is this the latest and greatest for the 5630 series?

4.) My laptop keeps connecting to the Neighbor's access point instead of my own after I reboot. I created a profile in the Acer eNet Manage Management to connect to my semi-secured (web enabled) access point, but it keeps jumping back to the Auto profile that came as default. I unchecked the option to allow eNet to connect automatically to other wireless networks and under "Other Options" I also disabled the connect to a more preferred network in my profile. (Btw, how do users rate this Acer Empowering Technology utilities that come the Aspire laptops?)

EDIT: Fixed -> Updated the 3945ABG driver to version 11.1.1.11 dated 04/30/07

5.) I have a laptop with an Intel 2915ABG wireless adapter connected to my access point and reporting 100% signal strength while the 5630 on the same desk with its 3945ABG is reporting 60% signal strength. Any suggestions as to why this is happening?... Hmmm, the Intel driver for the 3945ABG is 10.6.0.29 dated 10/30/06 while the one for the 2915ABG is 9.1.1.15, but is dated 03/06/06.... Time to check the intel site.

EDIT: Fixed -> Updated the driver to version 11.1.1.11 dated 04/30/07 and now the adapter reports 100% signal strength.

6.) Besides the Acer Web site, this forum and NotebookFourms are there any other forum/blogs dedicated to the Acer Aspire.

    Thanks...

How is the 5630 in regard to heat? I have an HP now and it gets really warm (95+ F) on either side of the fingerpad. Heat radiates up through the keyboard and it just isn't too pleasant because you palms sweat and the heat rises into your face. I am just wondering what the 5630 is like in real-world use since it is on sale at CC. It seemed to not have any heat rising through the keyboard and just a little warmth to the left of the keypad when I tested it out at CC. I have not used laptops regularly for a while and I am just looking for some user feedback. If the 5630 stays nice and cool, I need to consider it.

    Thanks.

Could someone let me know if they have the Aspire 5630 that came installed with VISTA and have you successfully wiped the drive and installed XP. Could you tell me if you had any problems, what version you installed, etc.
    Thanks
