Help! I had a party on Friday and one of my g/f's mates stacked a bottle glass of wine over my Acer 5630 laptop!
I got to the lappy about 5 minutes after it happened (yes they decided not to tell me!!) so i unplugged it and shook it to release water. I then placed into the airing cupboard to air it out over night. Took it apart Saturday and let the parts dry out, put it back together yesterday.

Tried it late last night and still not powering on so I’ve scabbed a can of AF spray from work and going to give it a good going over tonight with special cleaning buds.

Anyone else stacked some kind of fluid over their lappy? If so did they sort it? I’m preying to god I can claim it under accidental home insurance providing I can’t fix it myself!

    Cheers

i spilt a quarter pint of water over my laptop but lucky for me it still worked after i dried it out

but i took the battery out and unplugged it straight away, leaving it for 5 mins still plugged in is asking for trouble though

You said you got to the notebook 5mins later was it running at the time or just plugged in. Usually when water or any other fluid is spilled on a notebook you should immediately unplug it and remove the battery that way it cannot get any power. I really hope for your sake that you got to it in time and that it eventually comes back on, if it doesn't then the wine may have shorted out something in the notebook.

After that, it wouldn't be under warranty, anyway, mate. Keep in mind that even water can cause corrosion on the motherboard, and wine is just a bit more acidic than water. Here's hoping you're able to recover the system.

OK.... You have had (lots of) wine spilled on your lappie and people only told you 5 Mins after it happened. And the lappie was plugged into mains at the time too (probably).

Lappies and parties do not mix very well. IMHO. Desktops are fine for that kind of thing though.

    1. Anyway, if the lappie is covered by insurance (accidental damage etc.) take it and let your insurance take care of it. Don't open it or try fixing it yourself.

    2. If you are not covered than do the following:

. Power the lappie off and take the battery out
. Then open the lappie (take its covers off). Google for more info on how to dissasemble your lappie).
. Follow all instructions given and then wash the entire MB with methylated spirits. Properly. Than take the MB and let it lie in the sun for at least one sunny day.
. Re-assemble and then hope for the best.

If the lappie boots than sell it ASAP. Don't wait.
If it does not boot than your MB has fried.

    Hope this helps

I have read in some posts where poeple have done similiar things and they have had to let the lappy dry in a well ventilated spot ie. in front of a small fan for at least a couple of days to get it completely dry. But five minutes, that's a long time in computer minutes. Hope all works out in the end.

Well still no joy im afraid. I opened it up and there was lots of strange foamy residue over the motherboard. Im guessing where it has probably fried! Wll go down the insurance route, nice new lappy i guess.

Good luck and remember Lappies and parties don't mix. It's just too easy to stuff a Lappie up. If you want to impress people with a new Lappie....do it in working hours when all are sober and "compos mentis".

Otherwise have a party and use a Desktop with only a cheap keyboard and mouse available for partygoers. Spillage of any kind is then not a problem. Done it before and everyone had a whole heap of fun watching videos or just stuffing around with Kareoke etc. whilst the "box"( MotherBoard, etc.) are not accessable for pissed people to unknowingly destroy.

    Damage at worst:

    1. Another 2nd hand keyboard and mouse
    2. System Restore to put all back the way it was before the party.

Nothing like a CD jukebox running from a PC through a decent amp and speakers and a tv/monitor showing all the action to get a party going flat out...

    Have fun

if you still have limited warranty, as a last resort you can wipe off the stains on the keyboard plate. Spilled milk on my laptop a few months back, immediately turn it off and set it in upside down v on my table to let all of it drain out. then opened up the keyboard and wiped off stains on the metal beneath the keyboard. I got it to turn on after putting it all together but after a few days the lcd stopped working. Sent it to dell and they replaced 5-6 parts. Thats just with a limited warranty.

    @zbenjii:

Then Dell didn't do a very good job of checking the notebook and you got REALLY lucky. The factories we work with can tell if there has been a liquid spill even if it happened months before the notebook was sent in for service.

Ok sorted! Insurance company agreed to give me the value of laptop when i purchased it - £769. Looked at current price of Acer 5633 and its £469. So bit of a dilemna, do i get the same laptop and pocket £300 for a bit of xmas shopping or do i put a bit extra in and get a better laptop? Anything decent out there which is a better spec'd but not a whole lot more epxensive??
    Thanks in advance
