I have an Aspire that shows a power light without the battery and a power light and charging light with battery in. On power up the light next to the power light (disc?) comes on for 5 secs and then goes out and the DVD light comes on the goes off. There is NO bios splash screen. When I do a Fn Esc with a USB stick (256Mb) in place the USB stick light comes on. I suspect the screen is OK but the bios may be corrupted. Is this brick recoverable experts? Desperate as my dad is furious because I hassled him for a laptop only to break it - Please help.

Why do you suspect a faulty bios, have you had a bios flash fail on you? If this is the case and you can create a bootable device (CD or USB) then you might be able to blindly fix the bios using a batch file. Google for "reflash dead bios" or similar to find guides. Though this is not advisable except as a last resort and if you are very sure it is the problem - it is not something I would want to do on a new laptop.
I assume as you have not mentioned it that you hear no "beeps" during the boot failure? Most BIOS will attempt to display an error code on failure but also back this up with an audible code in case the display has failed for some reason.
Have you tried an external monitor to be sure it is not an LCD failure (from your description it sounds more fundamental, but you never know).
