    Hey Guys,

I want to do a clean install of my Acer 5670WLMi which came with Windows XP Home Preinstalled. (My CoA is stuck on the back of the laptop)

Unfortunately, I've deleted the Acer Recovery Partition. (but I wanted a clean install anyway!) I've managed to get hold of a copy of Windows XP Home OEM edition and the CD keys on my CoA doesn't work!!!

Does anyone know whether the CD keys are OEM or VLK? (I was reading somewhere online and someone suggested changing the disc into VLK and using the CD key would work!)

    Thanks

i did the same as you :(
and the key does not work... so far i tried:
    1. Windows XP Home OEM
    2. Dell version of XP Home

I even tried to contact Acer and they told me you need a special version of XP that is not sold :(
Doesn anybody be able to make an ISO out of the recovery partition and let me download it somehow (i can give a ftp space). I need standard english windows xp home for the aspire 5670.

    Thank you,

    Alex

First and foremost please check the disk that you "acquired" because apparently the disk is NOT an oem copy of windows xp home oem.

I decided to prove to you, as well as everyone else that the key on the bottom of the laptop is indeed a OEM key and will install xp with the correct media.

#1. First step is to PLEASE look at the media you "acquired". The first step is to navigate to the I386 directory on the windows cd. Then open the setupp.ini file and see what type of disk you actually have. If you have OEM on the last three letters of the PID you have OEM. Please look at the listing below to see the various types of keys etc.

    Retail = 51882335
    Volume License = 51883 270
    OEM = 82503 OEM

Here is a screenshot of my CD I made, showing the OEM nature of the disk.

See the red arrow pointing to the OEM in the PID? That shows that it's an oem copy.

For more info on this, or how to modify this look here @ this link - http://www.freepctech.com/pc/xp/xp00066.shtml

Acer told you wrong, and it's not that "special" at all. It's an oem copy, the same thing all OEM hardware manufactures such as dell, hp, compaq, gateway, etc. use. You don't need a partition you need the origional media. The "dell" version includes a few extra oem.dll files which when installed on an dell pc with a dell bios flags it so it does NOT need to be registered. On a non standard pc this will not work @ all.

As mentioned previously in the link there is NO WAY to turn a VLK copy of windows into an oem or retail. Only a retail and an oem disk can be interchanged by the modifying of the setupp.ini file in the I386 directory. A "VLK" copy of windows is a modified version of pro and uses a different key... not to mention an all new installation method.

Now, onto where I was previously.

Now, as I said I was going to prove to you that you can indeed install xp with the correct media using the key on the bottom of your laptop.

#1. I decided to update my windows cd, so I decided to use ryanvm's intergrator + nlite to recreate the .iso and install windows using VMWare.

After I extracted the cd files to my hdd, intergrated the latest service packs, mods, options, etc. I used Nlite to re-create the disk.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

After I re-created the .iso I loaded up vmware and did a demo install of xp home oem to PROVE to you guys that indeed you can use the key on the bottom of your pc. Your inability to reinstall XP home oem is either due to having the wrong pc media or you are not doing something correctly.

Please look below for some screen shots of me loading up XP in vmware and installing it using the correct key.

    [IMG] [IMG]

Here we see me setting up the correct version of windows (xp home) and allocating the correct hard drive space.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
here I deleted several keys so yo can't re-use my key, but you can CLEARLY see that it did install and take it correctly. It's all in the media you use people, please make sure you use the RIGHT copy of windows! If you don't have the disks you are SOL unless you talk to me on legally acquiring the right versions (contact me via PM).

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

As you can clearly see it is entirely possible to install xp home or pro on your Acer (or any pc for that matter) with an oem copy of windows. All you need to do is acquire the right media to do this.

I happen to have copies of ALL windows avalible from microsoft because I'm an MSDN subscriber.

This means I have the following

    Windows XP Home OEM
    Windows XP Home Retail
    Windows XP Home Upgrade

    Windows XP PRo OEM
    Windows XP Pro Retail
    Windows XP Pro VLK
    Windows XP Pro Upgrade

Windows XP Media Center Ed. 2005
    Windows XP Tablet
    etc. etc. etc.

If you need help reinstalling windows let me know, but the process is completely possible, you just need the techincal expertise to do this or you need the correct media to accomplish your task.

If you need help with this PLEASE pm me and don't ask here. But yea guys it's completely possible, don't rule it out b/c you didn't do it right or didn't have the right media. Remember apples with apples when it comes to software and licensing.
