i have an acer aspire 5672 that is about 1.5 years old
the warranty expired and i've had very few problems with it.
yesterday while i was playing css my game froze and my computer restarted randomly.
now when i turn on my comp it gives me the error
"windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
please re-install a copy of the file above

i have no idea what to do seeing how my acer came with no recovery discs.
    advice appreciated

Your Acer should have a disc to disc recovery feature, usually its Alt+F10, more than likely you would have to just wipe the drive, as you have no XP discs. If it doesn't work make sure D2D recovery is enabled in the BIOS.

i had this problem, and i just needed to do a windows repair with a proper windows CD. another reason it's crap that companies like acer don't give you a windows CD. i had reinstalled with XP Pro a while back.

In recovery console type chkdsk -r to check for problems.

After that yes repair that missed file.

install CDs are way better than those stupid recovery partitions.
altho, for most people out there that have never installed windows before, the recovery partitions are made with them in mind.
