I bought my Acer Aspire 5672 the day it came out. I've been using it for University and would like to get as much life out of it until I'm finished.![]()
Currently it has all the stock specs:
* Intel Core Duo T2300 (1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB, 2MB L2 cache)
* 15.4" WXGA CrystalBrite LCD with 16ms refresh rate.
* ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 128MB
* 120GB 5400 RPM SATA hard drive
* Slot-Load DVD super multi drive
* 1GB DDR2 dual channel memory
* 802.11 a/b/g wireless with singalup high efficiency antenna
* Bluetooth 2.0+EDR
* ExpressCard slot
I will be upgrading to 4GB of Memory, I got the info from:
http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Aspire%205670
I'll also be buying a replacement battery since mine only lasts 45mins unplugged on lowest settings. I'll probably buy a generic one fit for the 5672 from ebay for $70 unless someone can suggest something better.
I'd like to also upgrade the CPU. I've read a lot of people upgraded to the intel T2500 (2.0Ghz) but that chip is discontinued. Can someone please suggest the an inexpensive compatible intel chip that I could use, preferably from newegg.com or tigerdirect.com?
Thanks a lot, and any help is much appreciated.

I had the exact same model. I upgraded my cpu to a C2D T5600 1.83ghz ( SL9SP), saw a little boost in speed. I took quick look around and you can find them for about $120 USD on ebay. Also you could go with a T7200 C2D ( SL9SL) for around $130 USD.
Personally, I'd spend the money on a faster HDD and upgrade your memory to 3gb (only a 64bit OS can use all 4gb of memory). Save your money for when you want a new computer -
I've still got my 5672... it's not THAT old and still will run anything I throw at it.
As far as upgrades go Skibums did list quite a few and I agree with him on the HDD and memory 1st.
I've got a Western Digital Scorpio hdd in here currently (7200rpm) and 4GB of memory with XP (although I only see 3 and some change).
I've been eyeballing a new netbook recently for work, but who knows really. This system will run Windows 7 like the rest of them, I'm not worried about upgrading any time soon.
--ssx-- -
Go with 3GiG, if you can get that cheaper, because your notebook has a 32-bit memory controller, and will not address more than ~3GB RAM.
A fast HDD is probably the first thing to do, as it will improve app loading times and make the system more responsive. RAM and CPU upgrades depend upon what tasks you run. If you don't run tasks that have a high memory and CPU usage, then the extra bit of RAM and CPU will just be wasted. -
The laptop supports 64bit, it's not just a 32bit controller. The OS controls the 32bit not the chipset
-
Erm....No
First memory controller, second OS -.-
The chipset is a part of the Napa platform, and 64-bit and >4GB RAM weren't really that popular then in the consumer market. So, they left it for the next platform release. And the chipset is embedded in the memory controller, so nothing can be done about it.
The T2300 isn't 64-bit anyways, so to go the 64-bit route, the OP will have to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo :/ (which still won't help him to get the full 4GiG or more addressed)
You can read the datasheet if you (and the OP) want to. It'll explain things much better. No matter what OS you install, Linux, Windows, OSeX (whatever..) 64-bit....you'll never get more than ~3.5GiG depending upon the H/W config. -

Thanks for all the replies, everyone's been really helpful.
With upgrading to these new cpu's would I need to do anything additional to my laptop once I've put the new chip in? Update bios, install some software, etc? And is it really that easy to install it (just take out the old cpu and put the new in it's place)?
I also found the T2500 and T2700 on ebay for pretty cheap. Would either the T2500 or the T2700 be comparable to the T7200(SL9SL), is there a significant difference in speed? -
You need to remove the rear thermal module cover, and then unscrew the CPU's heatsink.
You can update to the latest BIOS if you want to, but try avoiding at first as this is risky stuff, esp if BIOS flashing is done in windows. Make sure its newer than v1.3224 though.
The Intel Core series is basically 2 Pentium Ms combined, whereas the Intel Core 2 Series was a revision over its predecessor. A T7200/T7400 will be a good upgrade. -
Heres a link to the " How to's" of the Acer 5672. Lots of great info there. Take a look at the Artic Silver 5 section. It's a link to SSX4Life's step by step guide for for AS5 appliation to the heatsink. Lots of pics, it should help you with the cpu upgrade. If I remember correctly, you need to upgrade to the lastest bios to use the C2D cpus.

alright, thanks a lot for all the help guys.
oh, and for some reason the link you made Skibums just opens a window to this exact thread. -
Get the hard drive first. The T2300e is still a very good CPU. They all downclock to 1GHz anyway. As someone who's upgraded to a T7400, there's not really much of a difference in day to day stuff like Office and Internet. Now if you have a specific need like running Handbrake or crunching Access databases all day, then perhaps the expense of a better CPU may justify the cost. I don't know that more memory is going to do much for you either, unless again you've got a specific need.

Alright, I'll be upgrading to the following. I believe this is the same hard drive that was suggested? I'll probably also pic up a slightly used CPU off ebay considering they're a lot cheaper as well as a new battery. That should last me another 1.5yrs which is all I'll need with this lappy.
Western Digital Scorpio 160GB 7200

If you guys have any further suggestions please let me know. Thank again for all the help! -

I know this is an older post of mine, but I had a related question.
I haven't purchased a Hard Drive yet and was planning on doing so very soon. I'm still looking at the following:
Seagate Momentus 7200.4 160GB
OR
Western Digital Scorpio 160GB 7200
I was wondering which one you guys would suggest. As well as will either one make a dramatic drain on my current battery life? -
It probably won't make a big difference one way or the other.

Thanks for the reply ZaZ.
Also, I'll be upgrading to the Intel T7200. That said is the T7200 SL9S F compatable or do I need to get the SL9S L as SKIBUMS suggested? I was thinking of this one from ebay, or one similar. When purchasing a T7200 is there any other spec info I need to know to complete this upgrade?
Thanks. -

bump for reply please (only being impatient due to ebay bid) thanks!
-
I'm not sure on this one >_< Sorry. The best suggestion I have is compare it to the motherboard chipset and see what the max that is supported.

Thanks SSX4life.
I think that I found a page that tells me I'm okay with either SL9SL or SL9SF, here's the link: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=27255 -

Well, in case anyone with an Aspire 5672 reads this post looking to upgrade their laptop, here's the info on the actual upgrade itself:
(my post is right under Evaders99)

Thanks for linking it and letting us know about it. I really wish Acer made an updated model of this.

For many 5672 models you can get a free battery from Acer ( https://www.acerbatteryrecall.com/AcerWeb/). There was a voluntary replacement for the batteries for many models. I received a new battery for free from Acer, but I haven't gotten to use it because my computer failed during Alt F10 recovery. Can anyone help me out and make a Recovery Disc for me. [email protected]. May notebook is dead until I have one. Also, make a backup for yourself if you haven't bc the Alt F10 doesn't always work!!!
