Hy!
I have an Acer Aspire 5715Z notebook and I would like to change my motherboard to a more powerful one which has a normal graphics card, not an integrated one.
The motherboard of the 5720G is compatible with this model? If not, which one?
Another question:
Can this series of Acer notebooks use 800MHz DDR2 rams? Or up to just 667MHz?
Thanks for the questions in advance!

5720,5520 and 5715 are all have the same case. But the motherboard's are different. 5720 (intel) and 5520 (amd) have both mxm graphics board and a DVI port with S-video at the left. 5715 doesn't have it. So if you use one of these boards you have to make hole for them or you must buy the bottom part of the case. I'm not sure but 5715 uses T2xxx intel cpu's and most of them are socket M. 5720G uses socket P cpu's. So you check it whether your cpu is socket P or M. Since 5720g-5520g have a mxm graphics board needs a heat pipe for the graphics card. 5520g and 5720g uses completely different shapes of heat pipes both cpu and graphics.I'm not sure about the heat pipe shape of the 5715, it can be the same shape with 5720g, so you can use it. 5720g uses 667Mhz rams but 5520g can use 800Mhz ram but 5520g seems to have north bridge problems.
I was thinking the same question a week ago. Because one of my friends 5520g was broken. I was thkinking that it's because of the motherboard. So I search the Ebay and 5720g motherboard is cheaper and I decided to use 5720g motherboard. But the problem was graphics card so I changed the card and it worked. -
Thanks for this massive amount of information...
It will help me a lot.
So, I'm planning to buy a 5720G motherboard with a GeForce 8400M GS GPU and put all this into my 5715Z housing.
Of, my CPU is already upgraded, its not the random T2390, I changed it to a T3200.
As I read the general specifications, it seems to fit the 5720G motherboard, too, but I'm not sure.
In Everest, CPU stepping is M0, so this means its socket M?
Would it be better to use a 5720G or a 5520G motherboard?
5520G uses an AMD CPU as far as I know.
May I ask you to reply for me in email via this address?

It would be much easier to communicate for me and for you too, I think. -

Intel Pentium Dual-Core Mobile T3200 LF80537GF0411M
T3200 seems to be socket P. So you can use the cpu on 5720g motherboard. In my opinion 5720g motherboard is better. 5520g motherbords seems to have north bridge problem and you have to find a heat sink for the amd cpu however it has a different shape. I guess 5720g and 5715z have the same shape cpu heatsink. Both 5520g and 5720g motherboards have mxm port so you have to buy the graphics card separately. You can use graphics which have Acer vbios 8400m GS 256mb, 8600m GT 512mb,3650 512mb,4650m 1GB (all cards have DDR2 ram and approved to be working on 5720g).
But opening the notebook, changing the motherboard is a little bit hardwork to do. You must be very careful. Inside the case there are some very thin cables. If you tear of the cables or brake the cards it is very hard to find and expensive at the Acer service.
So to change your 5715z to 5720g first of all you have to find those parts.
1. 5720g motherboard (965pm chipset one)
2. Mxm graphics card
3. Heatsink mounting bracket
4. 5720g lowercase or you have to open DVI and S-Video holes
These parts seems to be you need. But when you start to work some other parts may be needed.
In my opinion it is better to use forum. So everybody can read.
(Sorry about my english. I'm not using it for years because of it I can't remember some of the words or using them wrong)

Thanks for the description and pictures included. I think this I'll be able to upgrade my notebook on my own.
I wish there were more so helpful people like you...
Thanks again, bro!
(I found no mistakes in your english, even thought I'm neither a foreign speaker...) -

Hi Burk. I am interested in the GPU heatsink mounting bracket pictured in your post. It looks like a image from a catalogue, if so can you let me know where you got this from as I need to order one. I have a replacement card (upgraded from 8400m gs to 8600m gt), but new card did not come with bracket and I feel that the forcing off the bracket on the 8400 will damage the card (like to keep as a spare just in case...)
BTW have just spent the last 10 hours searching web - but no luck.
Thanks Gmak
