hey everyone, I have an Acer Aspire 5720Z laptop and am looking to upgrade the RAM. I want to buy Kingston KVR (cause im cheap and its available) rather than the Kingston Acer specific RAM.

I just want to know if anyone has had any problems with Acer and KVR at all? specifically on this model, but if there are any problems with compatability, i guess i could just bite the extra cost for the specialty RAM.

    thanks in advance

You can upgrade to 4GB DDR2-667 PC2-5300 ram, and you would need a 64-bit OS for that....
32-bit OSs read anywhere from 2.5-3.5GB of ram from the 4GB installed..!!
Your BIOS version looks pretty old, try flashing it to the latest, and if you come across any hardware problems after the ram upgrade....
You can try out Crucial....Corsair, OCZ and G SKill may have lifetime warranty as well....!!

don't think ANY current BIOS supports over 3 gigs of RAM on that MOTHERBOARD.. (maybe if you run VISTA 64)

but the BIOS UPGRADE is a good idea...

1.43 can be found at support.acer-euro.com

i was thinking about buying a 2G and a 1G.. i dont know if that would work though...
the question is just will the Kingston Value RAM work or should I bite the cost and get the Acer Specialty RAM?

EDIT: i have the 32 bit vista, and i am sick of running with the 1 gig of ram as is.
i know a bit about these sort of things, but have never upgraded RAM before.
the guy at the store i went to (BCOM in Edmonton, AB, Canada) said that Kingston reccomends using the KAC (kingston Acer memory) instead of the KVR (kingston value ram). he said using the KVR was potentially a bad idea because one of 3 things could happen:
    1. it could work just fine (which is what i want)
    2. it could work for a bit and then mess up my system (bad)
    3. it could fail and either mess up my system, or just not work (either way, bad)

i figure its a safe bet if no one has posted previous problems about it (which i have done plenty of searches for and found none).. but i just want to make sure

hopefully this clarified the problem a little.

as for the BIOS, where is the link to dl? i couldnt find it on the site you mentioned.

you want a real BOOST downgrade to XP..

PM atthegates he can tell ya what it did for his!

BIOS LINK @FTP link to acer-euro this is ver 1.42

i have 1.43... but they don't.... try thier version first

    AS FOR RAM

there are posts... maybe not about kingston... but general rule is 3GIGs works... 4gigs recognized but XP & VISTA32 bit toss up BSOD errors from hell.... and order RAM PER SLOT IS IMPORTANT... i'll try to dig up slot info for you..

the only time i have seen ram do any damage to a SYSTEM is when the RAM WAS FAULTY.... and i've been a tech for over 20 yrs... (in a small town)... it could possibily corrupt HDD DATA if booted with 3 gigs of ram and the RAM was in the wrong slot... that would require an entire reload of the OS and drivers most likely,,,
but that hasn't happened to anyone here yet,, and i know 2 or 3 people who did the 3gig thing.. using trial and error to figure out the right slot... and they didn't have any negative effects after swaping slots and rebooting

    what CPU are you running?
