Hi ,
I bought Aspire 5738 in Nov 2009 and I m running Win 7 over it since then .
Till a few days back i had no issues with it and it was working well ,but recently it has started rebooting after 3-6 hours all of a sudden while working or even if nothing is being done (only downloading is going on).
I read in this forum that it may be due to overheating (which may be the reason after all as now summer has started), but in order to check that I kept my laptop on the floor which is relatively cool and gives a proper vent to the heat emanating from the laptop but still I can see that it rebooted (which leads me to believe that it may not be due to overheating ) .
I have run the AVG full comp scan and no virus is reported , and I did not install any new software except the usual AVG updates .
Even though this laptop is in warranty and I read that it may be a hardware issue ,I am wary of giving it to Acer guys as then I will have to stay without my laptop for many days (repairing time can be long here) .
Can anyone help me in this regard , I mean if I am sure that its a hardware issue I will have to turn to the Acer service centre for sure however long it may take but can there be any other reason (may be software ,which I can solve myself) .
Thanks in advance

recently I checked the event logs of my laptop
its rebooting every 2 hours , and the first event which occurs is "eventlog - unexpected shutdown "
I will check if it happens while being offline also .
but guys please help me out here ...

I would suggest that you check your temps. because my 5738G heats like insane and I mean CRAZY heat CPU gets pumped up to 65C (while undervolted) and GPU up to 90C ..... I can't say I faced your shut downs but you can check your stressed temps for safety sake
-
Have u tried the bios update version 1.25 ? It resolves the overheating problem. It can be found at Acer driver site.
Acer Aspire 5738G
C2D T6600, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD
ATI Mobility Radeon 4570
Windows 7 x64 Home Premium -
I have an acer aspire 5738 and I am experiencing overheat problems also.
When playing games that have good graphics, like need for speed shift or aion, after playing for a few hours laptop gets really hot and shuts down.
I have been monitoring temps and my Cpu temp is at 80º -85º when the laptop shutdowns, it never goes higher. Intel says this cpu max temp is 90º so i dont think is a problem. I even did some stress cpu stress tests and cpu temp reaches more then 90º and does not shuts down which leads me to believe the problem lies with the ATI 4570 graphics card.
My problem is i can not monitor gpu temps, no monitoring program seems to detect the gpu so i cant test temperatures.
Today i just flashed the bios and installed the latest one available, maybe this will fix the shutdown problems.
But can someone please tell me how i could monitor the gpu temp ? what program could i use ? If someone has the same laptop and can measure gpu temp pls reply.
Thank you. -

GPU-Z detects the HD4570 temps just fine ...
My Idle Temps are:
CPU: 40-45C on both cores
GPU: 45-50C
My Stressed Temps are:
CPU: 65-70C (with my CPU undervolted)
GPU: 80-86C (while the GPU OCed or stock the temps doesn't really change)
if you have any questions about the 5738G don't hesitate to ask and no need to use others threads feel free to create your own, also the 1.25 bios has nothing to do with laptop heat issues, in a matter of fact it fixes AC adapter heat issues for only some defective devices -
I just thought i would use this thread instead of making new one.
I have tried undervolting but it doesnt seem to affect the clock speed. Or is it not supposed to? My normal settings are at 8.5 multiplier and 1.250V. I have set it to 6 multiplier and 1.000Vand eventhough CPU-Z and RMClock show the cpu speed and 1.6 Ghz , Everest and the Orthos(program used to test the stress on cpu) show 2.2 GHZ always.
My concern is that Everest shows the Cpu FSB at 376 (which is 42% overclocked from 266 normal FSB). So eventhough the multiplier is at 6 the FSB just gets overclocked to reach 2.2 GHZ. And if the FSB goes down to 266, the multiplier goes to 8.5 so the CPU clock keeps staying at 2.2 GHz.
Should i be worried about this ? -
@MahmoudDewy
I had a couple of question ~
1. What utility do you use to OC the GPU? Please advice.
2. My notebook also used to shut down due to overheating while playing demanding games as Grid, Dirt 2. Then I undervolted the CPU @ 1.00 V. Now its working ok. But is there any other solution other than undervolting the CPU to prevent the shutdowns due to overheating, such as any bios update or something like that..... -

if your CPU is the T6600( & im sure it is because the HD4570 configuration comes only with this CPU) then your multipliers should be the following:
6x -> 0.925v
7x -> 0.975v
8x -> 1.0125v
9x -> 1.0625v
10x -> 1.1v
11x -> 1.15v
so at 2200 MHz u should have 200(FSB)*11 = 2200 MHz
one thing I need to mention 1.25v is just too extreme for this CPU & thats maybe causing the shut downs, the voltages may vary ofc. but the sure thing is that the multipliers don't vary
as for me im running all the multipliers on 0.9375v with only the 6x running 0.925 some people even managed to go way lower than that on the voltages but this is the stable value for me
Try to uninstall RMclock and get everything back to normal & check with CPU-Z again the multipliers.... I will try to do some searching around to see if the 8.5x multiplier thing is possible cuz I can't say I saw that before -

2. Unfortunely not enough people complaining to Acer about our laptop heating problem so there ain't any bios releases that actually fix that problem, anyway you can always buy a notebook cooler this will help a little bit or maybe underclocking the GPU if you don't need it running with max power
-
my notebook specs are : intel core 2 duo p 7550( 2.26 Ghz, 1066 Mhz FSB), 4 GB RAM, Ati mobility radeon 4570.i have been doing some more stress cpu tests and the temp those go above 100º which is very bad since the specs for this CPU point at 90º for max temperature...
I really need a program that can adjust FSB speed. I just installed sisoft sandra to check more detailed CPU specs, and after the tests it advises me to reduce the FSB because its being overclocked at 42% from factory, without me touching anything...

You're laptop is less than 12 months old; i.e. still under warranty. Your better off getting Acer to fix it or to replace it.
-
Than you all for advice, this monday i will take it to the shop where i bought it and hopefuly they will fix it in less then 1 month

Hello
I have read this post as i have the same problem with my Aspire 5738G (T6600) when playing games or using process consuming programs (Arhicad for example)
Now, i've read the "undervolting guide" and did all the steps over there
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=235824
Now i have some issues:
1) When running the stress test (ORTHOS), i've noticed that RightMarkCPU and CPUID Hardware Monitor shows different CPU temperatures !?!?.
I've even try to use 2 more different CPU monitoring tools and those are all showing me the same temperature (except RMC wich shows -15c)
I presume the RMC display the wrong temperature while the other shows the same.
Do you have an ideea why ?
2) Before undervolting, ORTHOS "BLEND - stress test" gave me a max 94c CPU temperature (in CPUID). After undervolting, i'v obtained a max 92c CPU temperature with ORTHOS "small FFT's - stress test" .
2c difference it's almost nothing !
I have to say that in RMC i've seted all the VID's to 0.925V (as you can see bellow):
My question is: Why did i obtain only 2c save with the minimum VID's in RMC ?
Thanks -
Come on guys !
Can't anybody help me ? -

Hi! I am writing this from 5748 after 12 hrs of continuous-on usage. But even i faced too too faced the same problem(rebooting after 1-4hrs) some days ago. I still havent fixed it but i found out a way to escape from it.
The reboot problem occured only when i installed the intel graphics drivers(latest).I have intel GMA4500MHD. If u dont install them then ur laptop wont reboot.But if you dont install them the ur screen picture will start breaking as native win7Ultimate(32bit) driver cant deliver good performance for longer than 1 to 2 hrs.
But recently I installed Win7Ultimate64bit version.Its native graphics driver is very stable (i never got picture break problem since then).And so I never installed Intels driver. The only problem I now face is while playing games like Prince of Persia etc. It cant run in full 1366x768 resolution and runs in 1024x768 res.But still have 32bitWin7 in other partition just in case thhat res frustrates me. But otherwise the native driver gives full1366x768 res when running any other prog.
So buy yourself a 64bit Windows7.It is highly stable and will run any 32 bit prog as well. Plus it also allows you to install theoretically more than 128GB of ram.You might consider upgrading to 8GB or 16GB in future.So you can run any number of apps without any slowdown! (32bit allows only 4GB max ram)
Only 64bit versions of apps can harness more than 4 GB ram.These days software makers are creating 64 bit apps too. eg 7-zip,firefox,etc.
But still, if you are curious to solve the problem for 32bit version then do talk with the Acer guys.If they give you a solution then please re-Post on this forum..
THANK YOU -
HEY pleazzzz will someone tell me how to overclock acer5738 cpu. I just dont now how to. Back on my desktop PC it can be done with Gigabyte's Easy Tune software bcoz it has gigabyte's motherboard.
PLEASE HELP!!!! -
When I build a new system I like to make HW monitor a start up program and see what temperature is first shown, expect the low/initial HDD temp and graphics temp to be close to room temp at startup and CPU not more than +5degrees C but climbing fast
If you see crazy initial values at room temp you should assume it (the monitoring program or sensor factor) is wrong at high temp too. For Desktop gaming machines I have an infra red thermometer as final check but it's hard to use this effectively on a laptop. Certainly true however that if the Laptop CPU internal temp really is 100c the fan should be going like a hairdrier and the fan-exhaust temp should be painfully warm. If not open it up and check the thermal compound and tightness of Thermal module mounting screws etc. check any Fan settings in the bios make sense too
Most CPU's and most BIOSES will take emergency action (e.g. 50% throttling, fans already at max) as temps exceed 80c so at 100c this has clearly failed to help and most MB CPU and bioses will perform HW shutdown at 100 -110c to avoid chip destruction. It is really hard for a speed limited CPU to exceed 100c if the heatsink and fan are fitted, cleaned and operating correctly -

2- System drivers provide the lowest possible graphics performance compared to the newer once with more optimizations & fixes
3- Some games can't run in 16:9 aspect ratio (dunno about PoP though)
4- 32 bit systems can only see 3Gs of ram only and not 4G & actually most of the everyday applications like the things u mentioned wouldn't dare to ask for more than 4G of ram
-
And system drivers do give lower performance, but then whats the use if they are responsible for laptop heatup and Frequent reboots.
But I never saw any perceivable performance loss till date.Performance loss with system drivers is true but insignificant.
I never encountered any game that doesnt run in 16:9 aspect ratio after installing intels graphics drivers. But without drivers they certainly do not run in 16:9 a.r.
And yes 32bit systems recognises only 3 gigs of ram not 4 gigs. (My mistake)
And hey i was talking about more than 4 gig ram because one day i sat decompressing World of warcraft which was 6Gigs of file in7zip format. It took 6 hrs to do that on my 3gig ram Acer. It would definately be faster on more ram.

I was thinking to buy this laptop, but when I a saw your posts, about the heating, I was like with one foot back.
Did you resolve the problem about the heating?
The laptop that I'm thinking to buy is with this specifications:
http://fnac.pt/pt/Catalog/Detail.as...pd_stockDisponivel&template=Template Portatil
It's like your's? When you got your laptop replacement, how was the new laptop?
Best regards -

Dragon Age origins: u get fps around 25-40 with the physx effects on, native res. 1366*768, 2x AA, High settings (a lot more when physx effects off but the game doesn't look as hot)
PES 2010: solid 60-70 fps with high settings and native resolution
L4D2: 40-60 fps, all high, 2x AA, native resolution
CODMW2: you can absolutely max that game with 4x AA and native res. and you wont drop below 40 fps (it is kindda weird actually)
I think the good performance actually comes from the not very demanding native resolution
coming to the heat .... well ..... it still heats up like an oven but I did some research and it turns out that both the HD 4570 & the T6600 are both heating beasts a dv5 with HD 4530,T6600 as well as a Dell studio with HD 4570 & T6600 usually get my same temps (84-86C GPU max, 65-72C CPU max) and sometime even way higher, also in some Dells to fix that problem they factory underclocked the GPU.
other than that it has quite nice looks, good craftsmanship, nice speakers when you turn on the 5.1 speaker arrangement emulation, very comfortable keyboard, a VERY nice screen brightness and it is quite light compared to my other 15 inchers (but these ones had a solid cooling system)
the last negative point is Acer, once you buy that baby u r on ur own so don't expect a first class support unless you have a nearby Acer service center because each time you will try to ask them for anything they will tell you to ship it to the nearby service center which costs quite a lot
If I hadn't buy it and knew what are the flaws in it, would I have bought it again ?
The answer is yes because in that price range this maybe the best machine you can get for such low price
I hope I helped you man and if you have anymore questions don't hesitate to ask -
Hello there again MahmoudDewy.
Well, regarding to the temperatures, those are at full load (I mean, playing, watching a 1080pi movie, etc) or idle?
When the fan is working at idle you can hear it? And when is working at Middle/full load you can hear it to? The differences between the both modes is very large? Is very loudy?
Just for curiosity, when you open several *.pdf files the CPU overheat too? This is because I've a Toshiba A30-303 (P4 3.2Ghz) and when I open several pdf, the fan start working like crazy.. lol.
EDIT: Can you tell me which temperatures you have?
Best regards -
MahmoudDewy Gaming Laptops Master Race!
My idle/movies/word/pdf in a nutshell the average usage temps are: 40-45 for CPU, 48-54 GPU, you wouldn't really have to worry about that pdf thing it is really quite lolish never seen that bug in my life
The fan is not super loud but u can tell that it is working when the laptop is fully loaded
The loaded temps are mentioned in my previous post and you can tell how loaded I get this baby by the games I play & the graphics settings I use -
The fan is always working? When you are doing everything with the laptop, working with office, programming, orcad, watching movies, etc (no playing) the fan is always working? You can hear it?
-
MahmoudDewy Gaming Laptops Master Race!
It runs at a very low RPM while there is no stress you can't hear it unless u carry the laptop and put the air vent next to ur ears
