I have the specs for the above. I cannot burn CDs. It appears that the higher speed of modern CDs is not compatible. Does anyone know of a brand of CD that can be burned?

Check Verbatims. If those don't work it's most likely a hardware issue.

Thanks, I'll give that a try, although not optimistic. It reads a variety of CDs fine, and can burn DVDs without issue. Have tried Sony CD-R (noted as 1-48x) and Memorex CD-R (noted as 40x).

It looks like you have a hardware issue. A friend of mine has the 5740G version and his DVD drive gave problems after 1 week. Acer replaced it and now its fully working.
