So an update from my end.
Acer offered me an Acer Ethos AS5951 with an i7 2630M and Nvidia GT555M and I accepted. It looks like a fairly solid laptop and a nice upgrade over the 5740G and doesn't seem to suffer from any major issues.
Want to thank people who've helped me out before especially downloads for his helpful links and general guide and resources. This Owners Lounge has been amazing and it's been great. Cheers guys. -
That's a very nice replacement indeed. In fact it's a very good upgrade rather than a replacement- no wonder you took their offer.
We've passed 5K posts in the thread- congratulations everybody. -
I repaired my laptop Aspire 5740G the recovery with crisis disk USB fat pen was a success. The recent new BIOS update was installed 1.28 all ok.
Thanks very much to all users ! -
Hello guys
I might have a problem with CPU temperatures. Some time ago i have observed fps drops in games and was curious what was causing this drops. To check this issue i have installed hwmonitor and opened task manager in windows 8. I relized when fps drops occurs the CPU speed going down from ~2.5GHz to 1.2-1.4 GHZ and temp is over 90 degrees. First thing what I did was clean the fan, and whole cooling system from the dust and reapplied new thermal paste and I had hope it helps. I was wrong and temps still go that high, specially when playing WoW CPU temp reaches around 95 degrees, IDLE temps are about 55degrees to 60. Next thing I am worried about is that fan speed won't speed up even when temp reaches 80+, its running faster but not on the highest possible speed. To force fan on the highest speed i must use RW program and set manualy it at highest possible speed.
I have read many post on this forum and I think the temp shouldnt be so that high. GPU temps are fine, most of the time they are about 75 degrees. Laptop is no longer under warranty. -
ok guys (and you Dex, master of master, bos of bosses
how can i connect my 5740g with old TV set? TV has only 2 chinch (audio -video), i use this TV witch my old PC (connect by cable s-video -> chinch) but how with Acer?
Acer have d-sub and hdmi, mayby some adapter? (plis , get me picture how it look)
ps. almost 3 years i have this machine and... 60%wear level in battery :O -
@newuser3
You would need something like this (I think).
@volvo132
If the CPU is overheating but GPU isn't the heatpipe most likely is OK (although technically there are two separate heatpipes so one might be broken and the vapor would be gone so it wouldn't work at all). Still that would probably be noticeable every day- not only while gaming.
Make sure that CPU makes good contact with the radiator.
What CPU is it? -
-
I searched the thread but didn't find a definitive answer to the question of whether or not we can overclock the CPU on our Acer. I wrote to SetFSB developer and he asked me to send him a screenshot of the SetFSB's diagnosis tab and he replied, upon seeing the screenshot, that he's unable to support the overclocking of my 5740g. Does anyone now any other app that could that?
-
-
Thanks for the link but I must be having a different PLL because SetFSB doeasn't work when I set their PLL. That's too bad... Are there any different apps to OC CPU in our laptop?
-
daerragh, everything works with IS9LRS3197AKLF! We're just proceed with step 2mhz (133.3, 135.3, 137.3, etc.)
-
Yep, I tried this one and SetFSB gives me "PLL ID Error", meaning I've got a different PLL probably. I wrote to SetFSB developer anf he said "unfortunately, I cannot support it [meaning my laptop]", so I'm looking for other options. If anyone knows another app to OC CPU, please let me know. Thanks
btw. Which version of SetFSB do you guys use, because I used the latest Version 2.3.173.133 and it gives my the above error. Maybe you've got an older version? If so, please upload it somewhere for me. It doesn't weight much and I'd really appreciate it if you did. I've got i5-540m (replaced it from i3-330m by myself) and it must have huge overclocking potential. It really annoys me that I cannot OC it. -
Hi,
For a long time I've been using this thread as a source of info, ut now I tink I have a problem which was not described before (or that I coul dnot find using my search skills...)
My HDD just died after SMART alerting me for some weeks. It was an WD Scorpio Blue 650Gb. I found a WD Scorpio Blue 500Gb for replacement and replaced it (warranty is long gone).
While rebooting the system using the 3 DVD's from acer e-recovery, everything goes smooth until the computer ejects the 3rd DVD and tells me to reboot. When it comes to "installing services" in Windows 7 installation, at a given point everything halts and the message "impossible to install windows on this hardware" shows up. I can reboot the computer but the same message reappears.
Re-installing everything using recovery DVD's yields the same results.
I checked the new driver for jumpers and there was none (as in the previous one)
WD has an "advanced formatting" scheme for this HDD but says it poses no problem for Windows 7.
Can you help me "ressucitate" my 5740G?
Thanks! -
Guys, did anyone of you make a thorough test of 720qm/740qm/820qm/840qm with this lappy? I'm curious how Intel Turbo Core would work with these processors when: 1 core, 2 cores and 4 cores are used. I'm curious because even with i5-540m I encouter slight throttling when both cores are used. They should work at 2,8 GHz but instead after a few minutes of stress they switch to 2,66 GHz. Well, it's not actually throttling but the CPU is capable of running 2,8 GHz on both cores but it works at 2,66 GHz most of the time. So I'm worried that a quad core would heavily throttle in this lappy and if so, it would make it nonsensical to reaplace a dual core with a quad in this lappy because of heavy throttling - the performance difference would be minimal then.
eg. Would 820qm stay at 1,73 or 2 GHz when 4 cores are used? OR the other case: would it stay at 2,66 Ghz or throttle down when 2 cores are used? Does anyone have any experiences with 4 cores CPUs with this lappy?
Are the temperatures that bad as we can read in this thread? Like 90 degrees C while stressed for 820qm? I'd like to replace my i5-540m with a quad core without modificating the heat sink but I'm worried about the temperatures. I'd only apply a good thermal compound, like Coolaboratory Liquid PRO or ULTRA and I don't know if it would suffice.
Please share your experiences with quads in this lappy. -
Core i5 540M has a default clock of 2.53GHz and TurboBoost that works at roughly 3GHz.
If both cores are under load it wouldn't go above 2.80GHz although if temperature is higher than a certain threshold CPU would go down one step (133MHz) until the thermal threshold is reached.
For 4 core CPUs it's even worse than that since Turbo Boost is much lower for 4 core load than it's for 1 core load. For example for Core i 7 720QM the default frequency is 1.6GHz, max TubroBoost when 1 core is under load is 2.8GHz but when 3 or 4 cores are under load max TurboBoost frequency is 1.73GHz (and that is assuming the thermal threshold isn't met).
I would assume that with 45W 4 core CPU chances of achieving maximum TurboBoost would be lower than with 35W 2 core CPU (assuming the same cooling system). Then again 4 core CPU would be faster even without it in certain applications.
Personally I wouldn't go for a 4 core unit even though 5740G has a good cooling system. -
Thanks for the reply. And I agree, the chances of achieving satisfactory Turbo freqs are much lower but we never gonna know for sure until someone tests it.
Do you know anything about proven about the temps of a quad in this lappy? Would it really hit 90 C under stress?
On Wikipedia I noticed that Clarksfield Core i7 quads use DDR3 1333 MHz memory. If I have currently got i5-540m with 1066 MHz modules would I have to replace my modules with 1333 modules if I replaced Core i5-540m for Core i7-820qm? -
No- 1066MHz modules would still work fine.
As for the CPU- one person that updated his 5740G to 720QM gave up on it as it was too hot and another (I think) sticked to it.
I'm pretty sure it would hit 90*C with Core i7 since it does that with Core i5.
With over 5K posts it would be hard to find those posts so hopefully they would come back and share their experiences with you. -
Thanks for the reply again. I'm really beginning to think a quad is just too much for 5740g. I had hopes but know I'm facing proven high temperatures and unknown Turbo capabilities (when put in our lappy). Too bad I can't find any reasonably priced i7-640m.
I guess I'll just give up on upgrading this lappy and wait for some time to buy sth with Geforce GT640M and Ivy Bridge or better if the prices drop.
Thanks, downloads. -
Hello,
I bought my 5740G new back in 2010 and have upgraded it to keep it the beast that it is. Upgraded last year to 8GB RAM and 2x 120GB SSDs by replacing the DVD drive. The next item is I want to upgrade to USB 3.0. I bought a mini pci-express USB 3.0 card and plugged it into the spare full size slot but I only get USB 2.0 transfer speed and a notification from Windows 7 saying 'this device could perform better if plugged into a USB superspeed port'.
Doing some reading on the mini pci-express specifications it appears a motherboard could be wired electrically either be pci-express v1 or USB2.0 for that slot. Has anyone here confirmed that the spare mini pci-express slot is actually running through a USB 2.0 host controller? What of the half-height slot occupied by the wifi card?
Thanks guys! -
On a block diagram in a Service manual it says "PCIE + USB 2.0" for both mini-PCI Express ports so it's entirely possible that both are in fact wired as USB ports.

Hi,
Does anybody know what GPU overclocking tool is working on Windows 8? I want to overclock my HD 5650 on this laptop and AMD GPU Clock is not working on it even in compatibility mode.
Thanks. -
Hey, anybody try Crysis 3 beta on 5650 ?
-
-
Hi All- I have had a 5740 for a long time now, and recently a problem has cropped up. Audio crackles on high notes/volumes whatever you want to call it. I just started to notice it, and its very annoying.
For reference, my 5740g has been upgraded several times, the current stats are 8gb RAM, Blu-Ray drive, Core i5 -430, ATI HD 5650., Windows 8. Any ideas would be appreciated. -
Hello,
I have problem with my acer aspire 5740g version with core i7 620m and ati hd 5650.
Yesterday, my computer freezed for second and restarted while browsing(no heavy load). And the display does not come live. not from Hdmi not even laptop LCD. after power on , HDD works like it is bootong, but I am not sure if it is really booting.
Any ideas what's going on ? -
-
@bishopx
Yes, look like yahyoh may be right. -
So whole motherboard is useless now ? I found somewhere, that this notebook doesn't have MXM slot, so I guess I can throw motherboard to trash.
-
If the GPU died- yes although you could have it diagnosed at a professional repair center (not necessarily Acer's).
Replacing a mobo might be too expensive to make sense so it could mean it would be better to buy a new notebook.
Considering the cost of such a purchase- it probably makes sense to pay a professional to check it out before retiring it. -
drivers - 13.1
now i download 13.2 beta 7 and test it -
Hello,
is there any way to have the Bluetooth module in the Aspire 5740G automatically turn on on boot? Every time I turn on the PC, the BT module is off regardless of whether it was on prior to shutdown, forcing me to use the hardware switch. This is inconvenient since I use a BT keyboard and thus need BT on at all times. -
There is a setting in the registry:
HKLM\Software\WoW6432node\Wistron\LManager\Settings\Bluetooth
There's an entry "Bluetooth always on" which is set to "0" by default. changing the value to "1" should do the trick. -
Guys, just to let you know. I swapped i5-540m (2,53-3,06 GHz) with a quad i7-740qm (1,73-2,93 GHz). I applied the best thermal paste there is in the world - Coollaboratory Liquid Pro - and I did it very thoroughly (40 mins of application alone - this paste is the WORST spreader, but best achiever). The CPU idles at 47-53 C so basically just like my previous i5 (first supprise). I carried out the stress tests with Intel Burn Test 2.54. From my experience this app gives from 5 to 8 C higher temp than anything else (wPrime, 4xSuperPi), so the stress test is rather comprehensive here. The stress temp was roughly 82 C max with the app, so VERY well here. I think if I stressed it for a longer while it would go to 85-87 MAX. Before buying it, I was worried it would go up to early 90-ties, so a huge supprise here.
I did some benchmarking too, on Win 8. Cinebench x64 11.5 from 2,34 to 3,14 points. 3DMark 2013 Cloud Gate from 5150 to 5850 points. WinRar 4.20 x64 internal multithreaded benchmark from around 2800 kB/s (I don't remember the accurate score of i5-540m here but it was sth like that) to amazing 5300 kB/s.
Another interesting part is when all four cores are stressed with a normal app (i.e. not Intel Burn Test) the CPU runs at 1860 MHz, so with Turbo Core frequency. With Intel Burn test it first ran @ 1860 MHz but after a minute throttled down to 1730 MHz. With Cinebench, which is not as much stressing as Intel Burn Test, it was 1860 MHz all the time, so I'm really happy it doesn't throttle. When only one core is stressed (superpi) it operates @ 2,53 GHz. Thought it would go higher but not that bad either.
So if you want to increase CPU processing power without buying a whole new laptop, a quad core is a way to go. I think that our 5740g would handle even i7-840qm equally well. I regret I didn't buy that CPU (it isn't much pricier than 740qm). I was worried about the temps but now I'm sure our lappy would handle it well, provided you applied a good thermal paste. Heck, now I woudl even give i7-940xm a go if I found one at a good price (but that's rather not possible)
PS. The only drawback of Clarkdale i7s is that they lack AES-NI instructions and I encrypt my hdd with truecrypt, so I would use them.
Happy upgrading!
EDIT - Idle temps
Stress temps (while finishing one round of stress testing with IntelBurnTest):

And the fan is always on, isn't it ?

Any ideas about a Launch Manager version that would work on the Aspire 5740G and achieve the goal? Or, perhaps, is there some other way? -
Launch Manager version 4 (and probably up) doesn't work on 5740G so you're pretty much stuck with version 3.
Unfortunately I'm out of ideas at this point- the trick I suggested works on other notebooks and should in theory work on ours.
I can't do any testing on it since my unit doesn't have a Bluetooth module. -
-
Yeah, I've been through it...
-
Hello,
I have posted here once before. I am very appreciative of the help and advice given.
I have Acer Aspire 5740G-334G50mn
-I3 core
-ATI Radeon HD 5650 1GB
-750GB HDD 7200/min WD Black
-Ram (Default)
I have taken apart and reassembled my computer many times. I have upgraded the HDD and now wish to upgrade the RAM and CPU. My question is: What are my limitations on the RAM and CPU i can get? & Is the following possible? I hope to get the I7 CPU and 16gb of RAM greater then or equal to 1333mhz. I do prefer greater then 1333mhz. Such as:
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 SODIMM (Kit of 2) HyperX Plug n Play (Kingston) $66.60
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 SODIMM (Kit of 2) XMP (Kingston) $73.80
8GB 1866MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM (Kit of 2) HyperX Plug n Play (Kingston) $82.80
16GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 SODIMM (Kit of 2) HyperX Plug n Play (Kingston) $140.00
Sincerely Jungfaha. -
You can use 1333MHz RAM (working at this frequency) only with 4 core Core i7 CPUs.
With Core i3, Core i5 and 2 core Core i7 (i.e. Core i7 620M or 640M) RAM would work at 1066MHz.
No Arrandale CPU will allow you to use faster than 1333MHz RAM -
-
As far as I know- yes. RAM controller is part of the CPU these days so even with Core i7 72QM you won't go above 1333MHz.
As for the amount of RAM- I don't remember any issued with RAM upgrades but if anyone with 8 or 16GB is reading this- please confirm that it runs fine (I may not remember something- the thread is over 5K posts now) -
I have been doing some research on the I7 CPU on the market.
Compare Intel Processors
Yes it is true with the i7-720QM the max mhz ram is 1333, on the other hand if i were to get a i7-3940XM , or i7-3840QM I could use 1600mhz RAM and 32GB (2x16).
Now my new querstion is: Will these new generation 2013 CPUs be compatible to the 2009/2010 acer aspire 5740G-334g50mn?? -
No- these wouldn't work. You are limited to Arrandale CPUs. Neither Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge would work so no Core i7-2XXX nor Core i7-3XXX for us.
-
Right, "Arrandale". From my understanding Arrandale i7 CPUs only range from i7-6xxLM, i7-6xxLE , i7-6xxUM, i7-6xxUE
Products (Formerly Arrandale)
I am not aware of the "i7-720QM" being compatible and or "Arrandale". Is it? I hope soI would rather put the i7-720QM then any of the others.
"" so no Core i7-2XXX nor Core i7-3XXX for us. "" Is it possible for me to use the "Extreame Cores i7" i7-940XM , i7-920XM and or the "i7 Processor" i7-840QM?? -
You are right- I forgot that i7 720QM is Clarksfield not Arrandale. Anyway- this one and 740QM work fine too.
As for the rest- I don't know if these would work but I wouldn't want to use i7-940XM or i7-920XM as both have TDP of 55W (compared to 45W of 720QM and 35W of a Core i3/i5).
Only i7-840QM is 45W so that one would possibly make sense bit I haven't seen anyone test it. -
Another question. Where can i get info of the/my mother board Acer aspire 575740G-334g50mn
Awsome Great, Thanx so much for the help !I'll be sure to poste when i upgrade the PC.
-
Service manual is here (might be useful)
There's also a mobo block diagram. Look for "jv50_cp_sc_0903a.pdf" on the net. If you can't fin it, I'll upload it somewhere. -
@Jungfaha: You might also read about my i7-740QM experiences on the previous page of this topic (page 504). In a nutshell - I think you can upgrade to i7-840QM max, but only provided you're gonna use a VERY good thermal paste. My recommendations: Coollaboratory Liquid Pro or Ultra.
