Yes it is a good upgrade (I myself have Samsung's SSD 830 256GB) but remember that on 5740G you will be limited by SATA II and chipset issues with 4K read/writes.
You can't do anything about SATA II but you can use tweaks to improve write/read speeds (there are at least two methods in the SSD section of the forum)

Never had anything like this happen to me.Maybe some other driver that has some relation to the CPU is faulty?

But it is very strange, because it happens with Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, and I haven't installed any drivers for that. By the way, everything works fine, but I would like to know what the hell is happening!

    Hi!

I've been giving it some thought about upgrading the laptop lately. I love this model and a SSD is my first option, but the one thing that always annoyed me aside from the slow HDD was the screen, with its heavy gamma shifting and not-so-good view angle... Has anybody tried/considered/succesfully done a screen upgrade? Is it possible? Maybe to IPS?

Of course you can attach a monitor but it doesn't help when you're not at home... Any comment about this?

    Cheers :)

Thanks for your answer, but the problem was that I have changed two REG values in order to increase the performance of my SSD, following the link that somebody has written here. I have used again the default registry values and everithing seems to be in order with the processors, but the SSD performance decreases.

    Hi there,

I'm going to upgrade my laptop a little, because my old hdd 640gb goes with 34 bad sectors and about 100 delayed sectors..
I'm going to put a SSHD 750 GB 7200rpm with 8 gb ssd cached and already installed 8 gigs of ram
Still wondering if the cooler can support quad core 740qm core i7 and is it worth to try..

Also I have noticed that some of you have changed the wifi, but none information about the parts
I think that is for now...

I don't want to change my laptop because I have used to it for that time...

    Sorry for my bad English!

OK, I see now that with 740qm I'll get some extra temperature high above 80*C and the fan is going to work 90% of the time. Is there any laptop from acer capable to get that 45W in average temps and the architecture to be similiar as much as I can put that cooler in my 5740g

I have an idea to buy some low profile fans and put them inside somehow...

Can I put this in my laptop?

I have the same problem. I have looked for a solution, but the only one is to install the Catalyst 13.1 drivers and deactivate the automatic update of drivers in Windows Update.

Only to inform that I have used this guide and everything works perfect, but I have found something that maybe is usefull. If I change only the values of the memory frequency of CLOCK info 00, I have too much flicker. I have read in another forum (sorry I don't remember which one) that you should put the same value for the memory frequency in each CLOCK info where you have 1.0V. This happens because the system uses three states for low, medium or high performance and it changes between them whenever it needs, and if the memory clock is different when the system changes the state, the flickering occurs. In fact, you can see that these three states have the same memory clock values by default.
I have now a GPU clock of 680MHz and a memory GPU clock of 1000MHz. It is stable at the moment and without any flickering.
I hope this could help someone.

    Hi!

I just updated the laptop with a Samsung 840 Evo 500GB. I did the migration and everything is working as expected, just would like to check with you if my numbers are ok because this is my firts SSD.

At this moment I haven't activated over provisioning yet (almost 50gb!!):

Guys, does anyone remember if mini-PCI Express in 5740 is a "real" mini PCI-Express or is it bridged to USB?

I'm asking because I "upgraded" the notebook to Intel 7260 and if mini-PCI Express is indeed bridged to USB, it's USB 2 that might be a limiting factor for me.

BTW Intel 7260 is atrocious - don't buy it...

EDIT: I know the second mini-PCI Express (the Robson one) is real PCI-Express since the USB 3 mod was using it at full speed.
I'm not entirely sure about the Wi-Fi one though. It makes sense that it should be a "real" one too but I'd like to be sure before I start looking for possible solutions.

It does have BT 4 and is supposed to work on 2.4GHz band @300mbps and at 5GHz band @866mbps (with 802.11ac router).

While it does the latter rather well, it doesn't work at all at 2.4GHz band. When I mean "at all" I don't mean that it doesn't connect or anything like that - it does so and after while the speed drops to 802.11b speeds (11mbps) and stays there. This happens with any driver you want with max signal strength 6 feet from a router. Also this 11mbps is only theoretical - in reality you don't even get that - even websites refuse to load.

Changing drivers doesn't help, changing channel width to 20MHz doesn't help, changing power management doesn't help, switching router's doesn't help.
My old Atheros card outperforms it in terms of performance (even at the point when Intel still works at 300mbps) and obviously in terms of stability.

Considering the fact that most routers are 2.4GHz and notebooks are meant so be carries around, one cannot hope that 5GHz AP will be accessible. Most likely it won't and dropping connections after 13 minutes (I tested it) is not enough. Just imagine yourself in a coffee shop or in an airport trying to use 2.4GHz wifi that drops down to 11mbps and for all intents and purposes stops working after 13 minutes...

Also it's not specific to my card or myself - there are so many people complaining about it and Intel has done exactly the same thing when 6230 had the same problems - nothing!

It can't possibly be antenna's fault considering Atheros is working fine using the same antennas and that both cards get the same RSSI (signal strength) and both connect at max speed (at first in Intel's case).

I have some usefull information about the brightness control in windows 8.1.
I have found by myself a "fix" for the brightness problem of the ATI Mobility 5650 HD (maybe it works for every GPUs with the same brightness problem). If you change the brightness level (of course the brightness of your monitor doesn't change, only the brightness bar moves) and after that you switch off the monitor backlight by pressing Fn+F6, then, when you switch on again the backlight, you will have the last selected brightness level. I have got installed the last catalyst 14.2 beta version, but I think it works also with every previous versions.

3 years later, I am in love of this laptop yet... I can do whatever I want with it, with an SSD everything run incredible fast, I can play every games I want with enough graphic quality (I don't play games too much but, for example, I am playing Assetto Corsa and I can play at 50fps)

    Hello everyone!

As of today my precious 5740g just turned 4 years in my possession so i decided to make an upgrade.

    I installed an Intel core i7 840QM 1,87-3.2GHz :D
and 2x4GB PC12800/1600MHz RAM Hynix (Hyundai electronics)

It actually flies even though i haven't installed SSD yet but hope soon I will.

thanks to @boazzz I made that upgrade who did the same except for the 16GB of RAM which I don't need for my work for now.

The only thing that bothers me is that the Intel turbo boost driver in device manager says it doesn't work but it actually overclock to 3,2Ghz and works flawlessly. Do you thins this is win 8.1 issue?

The temps are quite good idling at middle 50's.

My previous processor was i5 430m and 4gb/1066mhz of RAM.

It has Windows 8.1 pro 64bit installed on.

Now my RAM run at 1333Mhz and the memory benchmarks singnificantly changed

Hello, I am thinking about doing the same, where did you get the cpu and the memory?, how much did it cost?.

Is this the cpu you got?

Yes, this is the CPU :))

I'm totally amazed. Today I applied new thermal paste and the things went really COOL

I did some benchmarks on 100% loaded system - CPU, RAM, HDD and VIDEO. The cores idle at 45 degrees and max out at 80 degrees after 20 minutes stress tests - this is amazing performance!

When running all tests at the same time cores idle at 2Ghz, when only CPU stresses it idles at 3200Mhz. - 71% overclock!

I uninstalled Intel boost driver coz 4 cores CPUs don't need it, it is designed to work with 2 core CPUs with integrated graphics, i7 840QM boosts on default without a driver :D

    PrtScr capture_8.jpg

and here's the RAM memory test :D

    PrtScr capture_3.jpg

    Totally worthy!

Just bought i7 820QM used for 80€ and i've just installed to replace my old i3 330m and its a excelent improvement.
Now i can play BF3 without problems!
@blacksapphire your RAM voltage shows 1.35v and a maximum clock of 800mhz but it never goes higher than 666mhz (1333mhz) right ?

Exactly! 1333Mhz is the limit of the motherboard and the i7 Itself, but you can add two dimms and 16Gb max RAM as well.

    I bought mine 840QM (ES) for 70€ and 8gigs of 1600Mhz ram for only 35€ :D

    Hi kvalitet.
1- Yes. You can buy one from ebay far better than the original, 12 cell for example, which last longer.
    Battery for Acer Aspire 5740G 334G32MN Aspire 5740G 334G50MN 10400mah 12 Cell | eBay
2- Try to open and see the keyboard connector. Remove it and install again. If it works you are good... if not buy another :/
    Genuine for Acer Aspire 5740 5740D 5740G 5741 G 5738DG Keyboard | eBay
3- Its normal for a laptop but you can improve your lower temp by cleaning your vent like i did.
4- Nop. Just update directly to 1.28

    Hey guys,

First, this thread is awesome and such a huge help. I appreciate it very much since I friggin' love my 5740G. Unmatched bang for the buck.

I have tried searching through the thread for a unified CPU/RAM/SSD upgrade guide but haven't found one. I have taken the comp apart multiple times to clean fan and apply thermal paste, but have never upgraded and don't know much about it.

    I currently have1 x 4mb 1066mhz stick, i5 430M processor, 500MB HDD, Windows 7 64-bit.

I'd like to significantly increase my comp's speed without breaking $400, but I know very little about the potential upgrades. Could you guys point me to an upgrade guide and make some recommendations on what you would do with $400 to best improve the 5740G-6979?

    Thanks so much!

    Hi!
I recommend buying a new CPU for start. Like i7-820QM for 100$ give or take.
Then 2 RAM modules 4GB each at 1333MHz (Some users say 16GB its possible) which will cost you less than 100$ (kind of). It doesnt matter the RAM brand.
About the SSD... well i don't know. Depends on how much GB you want. Probably more than 100$

If you want to spend a little more i would say to go after i7-840QM ;)

Ok after reading 250+ posts, I want to thank everyone for the ideas.

However I can not find a solution to my issue.

I am getting the 'dreaded' --- Display Driver AMD has stopped working.....

I have tried so many solutions and believe it is a driver issue. I have tried numerous video updates and nothing seems to work. It is not a heat issue because it happens on cold boot up too.

I have the Acer Aspire Model of the 5470G with the ATI 5650. No over-clocking or changing of any major settings.

Anyone know a fix for this and what is the best/most stable version of drivers for this computer.

    Thanks
    Khando

I sometimes get that when i play some games with my GPU overclocked.I usually downclock it a bit and it get less frequent.
It doesn't happen on all games tho and haven't had such issue with no overclock and no gaming so it may be different issue for you.

Thanks Andy. I'm having a hard time figuring out why my Wi-Fi transfers are not as fast as they should be. It's definitely 802.11ac alright and signal strength is great, not to mention I'm the only person on 5GHz band. Still for some reason I can't get above 25MB/s and that's the most optimistic figure.

I was considering USB bridge being the issue but if that's not the case than I might have to look into NAS as a potential culprit. I'll run some throughput tests with a different computer connected to WAN port of the router and see what is the speed. Anyway - 5740G is apparently not to blame.

EDIT: BTW, mine turned 4 years old few days ago

I can't say for sure. I've given up on 2.4GHz range on my notebook- it's working exclusively on 5GHz band these days (at least at home).
I've been on holidays (without the computer) so I haven't had a chance to use the notebook on 2.4GHz away from home for longer.

I'm using the most recent drivers v17 (not available through Intel website yet but released by Gigabyte). All I can say for sure is that 2.4GHz is still slower than my Atheros that came with 5740G. As for stability of the connection - I haven't had the chance to test it yet - when it dies I lose connection to TrueCrypt containers on a network share and these don't like being treated this way. You can't simply mount them again because as far as the container is concerned it's still mounted.

I'm going to test it on 2.4GHz band too but I;m not having high hopes for this.

    @downloads

I read somewhere that it works best with new intel chipsets, so keep your chipsetdrivers up to date.
I read also good results with Dell betadriver Driver Details | Dell Australia

    Good luck.

Chipset drivers are up to date. As for the driver from Dell - I used this version (although coming straight from Intel) and it worked fine on 5GHz band and was fantastically bad at 2.4GHz.
Intel was never very good at Wi-Fi cards but they are struggling to get them even working properly nowadays

Anyway - I've had no choice. Broadcom-based 802.11ac cards are not easily available and to make matter worse don't work properly with some Quallcom-Atheros hardware and so it happens that my router (TP-Link Archer C7) is QCA-based so it had to be Intel anyway.

My Intel 7260-AC is coming in a few weeks but I'm afraid because all the networks I use are in 2.4GHz band...
But I will give the feedback
