This is the one you need Slimline SATA op SATA-kabel in de Conrad online shop , maybe you
    can buy it cheaper.

I was looking for it because I want to put an SATA3 minicard in it instead of the wlan so I need the extra space for the SSD
and don't want to loose the slimline conn., so I buy this one. Slimline SATA-combi-verlengkabel rood 30 cm in de Conrad online shop

Now I must hope that I can boot from SATA3.

    @Zebandido

There are 6 SATA2 lanes in our chipset.

Hello, anyone got a link for the lastes bios version?, I have been searching but can't find a download link from a source I would consider safe.

I have successfully updated my laptop CPU from i5 430M to i7 640m, but now i get "CPU ID: 55 No Microcode Update Loaded for Alternate Processor" at bios loading screen. Is it safe to update the bios?

    Regards.

Yes its save. I had the same when I go from i3-330m to i7-640m, nice upgrade.
Strange, at the time these laptops were sold the were also go with i7-620m, its only a case of multiplier, why new Microcode ?
For Shure is to go with Dosflash.

    Hello again, I bought two second hand memory modules (1x Samsung 4GB 1Rx8 PC3 12800S-11-11-B2 M471B5173QH0-YK0 1344 and 1x Samsung 4GB 1Rx8 PC3L 12800S-11-12-B4 M471B5173BH0-CK0 1230).

After installation, I can see the correct memory amount detected (BIOS), but when I try to start Windows7 or Debian the system restarts automatically while loading.

I tested each module separately, and together, same result (blue screen and/or restart),

Is there known compatibility issues with Samsung 1600Mhz memory modules and this laptop?

As always, any help is really appreciated.

    Regards.

I did search the forums but, what I found was someone post about buying 1600Mhz memory as it is cheaper, and so I did thinking it would work..., next time I will do more research :(

So, where do you guys buy brand new memory?, Ebay/Amazon?

Unfortunately Intel HM55 supports only SATA-II speeds but I think this is close to the max possible.

I m not saying that 1600Mhz memory wont work, on most other brands there also samsung memory chips.
    I think its faulty SPD.
I bought 2x4GB Hyundai PC3-10700 second hands for €20 on marktplaats. (Dutch EBAY daughter )

Looks very good SATA2 speed to me!

    Testing minipci-e SATA3card in WLANslot

    It's a test from a SATA3 card with Asmedia ASM1061 chip.

    IMG_0584.JPG

To my surprise it will detect by BIOS, but not able to boot from it.

    IMG_0586.JPG

So I test it under Windows, first with default driver,

    w7default.png

    Then with asmedia driver,

    asmedia.png

    19-maart-2014_17-18.png

Results ? SATA2 have better speeds, see #5415, so I have to send it back.

It's nice to see that V1.28 BIOS is capable to boot from pci-e and to prove that WLANslot have also PCI-e speeds. :) ( downloads)

Hi guys i have a problem and i think you can help me! I Bought a second ssd for my laptop (kingston hyperX 120gb ssd3) I know our laptop recognize only ssd2 but thats not my problem. I remove the dvd and buy a candy and install the older hard drive there. And in the main slot i installed the 120gb ssd. I remove temporarily the older hdd to install windows 8. i installed windows 8 on the ssd with an external dvd driver. All gone perfect, the pc boot normally into windows.
I reconnect the second driver, and format it so won't afflict with the other ssd. When i restart the computer the pc wont boot until i remove the second hdd. Stacks in the acer logo screen. I press the F2 or F12 to go into bios in order to change the priority but no response. When i remove the driver the pc log into windows 8 normally again. I think the problem is bios update but i am not so sure. (because windows recognise the second driver when i attach it after the laptop log into windows). I am waiting for your opinions , thanks for reading :)

Hello to all Acer 5740G owners. Several months ago my laptop started lowering it's CPU (Intel Core i5-430M) frequency to 50% while playing games on Windows 8 x64 / Windows 8.1 x64. I've never seen this before.

    zjA1gHp.png

Does anybody know what cause such behavior? Heat? Also I have overclocked ATI 5650 (670 / 900 mhz)

    Hello guys

It's been a long time since my last (and only) post in this thread. I just want to thank all they guys & girls who helped me back those days.
Opening and cleaning the notebook and putting thermal paste on CPU and GPU were finally the solution. Thank you!

Since some time, I've been using Linux as my main operation system and I'm still delighted.
I've been using Linux Mint. No problems at all, besides the fan control. The fan is noisy. It's annoying and without wearing a headphone, it's hardly bearable. Even in the Desktop environment - using Office, Eclipse or Matlab - the fan is under full load.
So, I've been looking for a possibility to control the fan the past weeks. Haven't found a solution yet. Neither the officials guides on the linux mint/ubuntu homepage nor any other internet sources are helpful to me...

Is there anyone using a linux distribution based on ubuntu on this notebook, while also handling the fan?

Best wishes. Have a good weekend!

    Barliuscha

Check your temperatures. If they reach ~100°C, open your notebook and clean the fan, put some thermal paste on CPU and GPU.

Hello guys. I am upgrading my laptop for the first time and I am quite an amateur. So pls help me.
    1) I have 4gb of RAM and confused between upgrading it to 6gb or 8gb. Would upgrading to 8gb would make a lot of difference instead of 6?
2)Also thinking of putting a ssd as second drive which is this
Mushkin Enhanced MKNSSDCR60GB-DX7 2.5" 60GB SATA III 7mm Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com
how should i go about this? should i put this in place of hdd and put the hdd in the hdd caddy?
3)As i would be installing win 7 on ssd how should I install it without optical drive? I dont have an external optical drive.

    thanks.

    Hi cooldave_1990

    1. It depends on your needs - if you install 8GB and your usage never even exceeds 5GB, than there's gonna be no difference at all. I still have 4GB myself and I'm more inslined to upgrade to 6GB which would allow me to replace only one bank. I'd rather not spend too much on a 4 year old laptop.

    2. You can place them either way although...

    3. ...if you placed SSD in the place of HDD you should still install Windows from DVD and only then replace DVD drive with a caddy. Another option is to create a bootable USB stick beforehand and install Wind 7 from it. I'm lazy so I'd rather place SSD where HDD currently is and use DVD drive to install/recover Windows.

The above is true but there are two issues - first one is that there is very little difference between single channel and dual channel operation (some 5%).
Secondly there is a flex mode which works like so- 2GB module and 4GB module work like 2GB+2GB modules in dual channel and the remainder of the larger module (2GB) as single channel (this works on Intel's chipsets although I don't know if on all of them).

All in all I wouldn't consider this to be of any importance.

I installed my Intel 7260-AC yesterday with the 16.10.0 drivers from Intel and the connection was poor. I didn't crash but the speed was laggy so I found out the newer drivers 17.0.0.34 and this was the result at my home, where my Nexus 4 can get a 15Mbps up and downstream.
    Captura de tela 2014-03-25 03.58.49.png
It was stable at home but not good enough. So I tested today at my college and this was the real result:
    Captura de tela 2014-03-25 17.21.18.png
Im happy with it... It's very stable but i have to test it more at my place because with Atheros Qualcomm I used to have this:
    Captura de tela 2014-03-12 18.20.28.png

Note: My PC is running Win 8.1 x32 and it's only on 2.4GHz.

Driver v17 is better indeed - mainly on 2.4Ghz band as there's not much difference on 5GHz.

Still you won't see nearly as many problems I did because you are testing only Internet speed which is always relatively slow. I also use a NAS via Wi-Fi and this is where 2.4GHz performance of 7260 really lags behind Atheros.

Unsurprisingly it's a driver issue - I tested 7260 on 2.4GHz under Linux and it exceeded 12MB/s (roughly 100mbps) transfers with ease, something that is still impossible with Windows driver.

I think I've maxed out the possible upgrades for this laptop.

Installed i7 840QM, Intel 240Gb SSD, HDD in caddy and 16Gb of RAM Kingston The workflow is absolutely amazing and most of the benchmark programs gave me twice as good results as before the upgrades, so hopefully this machine's gonna work for me few more years. :D

I'm not quite sure the cooling and the charger are going to cope with it's power draw and temperature.

I've measured power usage under max load of all system and it is 115w now.

And so I've finally managed to overclock the machine using setfsb or RW-Everything :D

Unfortunately, the FSB is unstable over 150Mhz, CPU is forced up to 3555Mhz .
The ram clock is pushed too up to 750Mhz/1500Mhz, so it gives better benchmarks and reads at 19 700mb/s

Stay in touch, I'm still doing the optimal tests.

Hello guys. I have to share with you with my sadness. Two days ago GPU in my acer 5740g died. Firstly some artifacts appeared on the screen then after few hours screen is completely black. Is there any way to replace damaged GPU, or I have to look for new Motherboard for replacement. Of course the question is if its worth to replace the whole Mobo.

You can't replace the GPU. As for mobo - try looking for used ones from a dismantled notebook or for a whole notebook with physical damage to the screen (people often sell those cheap).

A new mobo would be to expensive to be worth it for a 4 year old notebook.

OK guys, this is the moment of truth.

I've got my Aspire 5740g-6979 in basically original condition as far as specs. i5 2.27hgz, mobility radeon HD 5650, 4gb ram, 500gb hdd. The only thing I've done is change out the battery pack for a 12-cell and put on new thermal paste.

I'm about to graduate law school and my parents have offered to buy me a new computer since I've had this one for 4 years.

However, they don't really have, like, $1,250 to drop on me. And I still really like the 5740g. I especially like all the inputs -- 4 USB, HDMI, input, output, audio, ether, inter, VGA lock...it has it all!

So the question is: at this stage of the game, do you guys recommend upgrading it with like $5-600 worth of upgrades that I could ask them for, or try and find another gaming machine for $800 (that's what I got this puppy for -- still can't believe it!).

I'm not too afraid of DIY projects as I've taken the comp apart a few times now...I just don't really want to buy great stuff and then the comp not be able to handle the heat or the mobo quitting.

    What do you guys think?

    @ deathbymonty

I wouldn't go for upgrades at this point/ Whatever you do you won't make 5650 any good with new games - you need something like nvidia 750M or faster to enjoy recent games.
Everything else about this notebook is holding up pretty well but if you plan on gaming (and you used that word in your post) I would rather spend money on a new notebook or at least save the money you have/can get towards a new machine.

Thanks, downloads. Do you have a cheap system that you recommend? I tried to go to Acer to build a system like I did with 5740 but they don't seem to allow for that anymore...

I have to say I like Aspire v5-573G. It nicely built, has separate fans to cool CPU and GPU and there are ones with Full HD matte screen. I'm not sure if it's within budget where you live and if you like the idea of an ultra book.
Currently Acer switches GPUs to new generation of nVidias (8 series) and AMDs (R7 so far) so you might want to give them a while and then make a decision.
I'd also look at Lenovo if I were you.
    What had happened exactly?
If you had not to attempted to flash BIOS and failed than there is no point reflashing BIOS. It's not an operating system that can be reinstalled.

    Hi all,

I want to upgrade my 5470G. I'm now using the stock Atheros AR5B93 wireless adapter with Windows 8.1.1 Pro, but I'm having connections problems on my Netgear R7000 Nighthawk on 2,4ghz. After being on the internet for 5 minutes, my is connection is lost. I tried to reinstall the drives, but it didn't help. What are my options next? Is Intel's Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 a good solution for my problems (I have 5ghz at home)?

    Thanks in advance!

Intel 7260 is a piece of cheese, it works fine on 5GHz but barely on 2.4GHz (has both stability and throughput issues making it pretty much unusable at this band).
I do use 7260 on 5GHz band and mostly use my notebook at home so it's not a great pain for me but if you carry yours around and are forced to use 2.4GHz access points, 7260 will not be an upgrade.

Well I have to disagree on this. Intel 7260-AC with 17v drivers works just fine (for normal users). I don't have any issues on 2.4GHz band and I get pretty good speeds.
But if you ask me if it's a good upgrade for 2.4GHz use I would say no for that. Stay with Atheros. Maybe it's not Atheros fault @nielless
