This was the best part for me when I upgraded my laptop. I bought myself a 10400mAh battery and when I'm studing with wifi on it can last for 5/6 hours

    I think i7-640M is a good value-price between i5 and i7 quadcore.

    Hello all,

Well after 5 good years my laptop was so dodgy I went for a factory reinstall which hangs at 12% and looks like I have a corrupted hard drive.

I have no windows 7 disk, it's on a partition. I have the cert to the rear of the laptop. Just wanted to check what my options are, which I am thinking involves a new hard drive.

If you can still read the product key on the sticker than use it with a borrowed Win 7 DVD and install (on a new HDD of course -assuming it's even needed).

What exactly led you to believe the drive is failing? Did you run any tests, check SMART status?

Yes I was a bit hasty in my panic and managed to do a reinstall and all went fine.
I got a STOP blue screen a day after the reinstall though so ordered some new memory!
Going to do a 4 to 8 RAM upgrade one stick at a time. Can I run 6gb in the interim ? I think I have identified the bad stick.

Many thanks for your help. I was wanting to just ask a couple of further questions regarding upgrades.

My current battery is awful. Can you suggest a decent replacement?

Any hard drive recommends? Have been looking at the Seagate 1Tb hybrid.

    Many thanks.

    Hi there.

I can't suggest a particular battery since ordering from abroad might cost you too much but I'd like to point out to two facts - one that it can't be too cheap and two that if the battery advertises increased capacity over the standard one it also has to have increased dimensions. If you see a battery that is supposed to be 8800mAh and it's not twice the size of the standard one - it's a fraud.

I bought such an extended battery and I'm very pleased with it- over 6 hours of battery time easily.

As for the HDD - I made a switch to SSD. These days 256GB SSDs are far more affordable than when I bought mine so you might want to consider it. It does give your machine a new lease of life.

    Hi,
I upgraded my laptop with 120GB Intel SSD and put 4GB ram instead my old 2GB piece of Ram. Now I have 6GB Ram and works perfect - my almost 5 years old machine is like brand new.
Also ordered from China 12 Cells Laptop Battery with 10400mAh capacity. Will see soon is fake or not

First off - hi to all the lovely people here!

I've had this laptop for quite some time and it's been running great. Recently I opened it up to clean all the dust, while at it I decided I might as well get some additional repairs done(replace audio and DC socket - both had iffy connections). Since at this point it's all disassembled I was wondering if I could do anything more to improve the performance and saw that some people have upgraded their CPUs.

Currently I have i5-430M and heard that i7-740QM could be used(not sure if it's 100% correct; Also are there any better options out there?). How complicated is the process of upgrading it? Is it just a simple swap with a new thermal paste or are there some more complex things required to be done? Also is it even worth it? As I said previously - it's been running great, I'm just looking to improve the experience a bit on the few occasions I run some games.

Upgrading CPU us as simple as updating BIOS to the most recent (before the upgrade of CPU) and swapping the CPU. Nothing more.

Yes indeed 1.28 is the most recent one (download here) and it's the one that adds new CPU microcodes.

Don't think CPU-upgrade improve your games, GPU is bottleneck.
Think SSD give you better experience, maybe with some extra RAM.
If you go to Quadcore, remove black plastic from heatsink to fit your CPU-die.

Well the new memory made no difference. The two new windows installations I have done so far have both deteriorated after about a day, becoming quite unusable. Every application gives a spinning circle and I get blue screens on reboots and even attempts to do repairs.

Have ordered ssd drive so hopefully tomorrow all will be well again.

Тhis memory is not compatible with your laptop. I had the same problem with one piece 4GB SP and I found my after 2-3 attempts - Samsung 4GB PC3-10600 SODIMM 1333, M471B5273DH0-CH9. Now I'm searching for another one of the same type, but if difficult.

The memory is actually fine. I installed the ssd drive this morning and my god. Installed everything, Windows, all updates, drivers, Steam, etc in about half an hour.

I thought it was the RAM because I have not previously had a hard drive fail on me but have had RAM problems.

Now for the battery. I'm going for the Acer Aspire 5740G-334G50MN 8800mAh,11.1V from acerlaptopbattery.co.uk , unless anyone can recommend anything better/cheaper ;-)

For me Hynix HMT351S6CFR8C-H9 SODIMM 4GB PC3-10600 (1333Mhz) works fine.

Can't prove it, but I think buying RAM today for our laptop, say PC3-12800 (1600Mhz)
is primery tested on that speed, I think for lower speeds they put "save results from the past" in there SPD, which works good with the RAM-chips those days.

    Any thoughts on that ?

im thinking of buying new rams to my laptop, is there any noticeable improvement between 1066 and 1333 mhz ram modules?

There is not noticeable improvement or there is none - depending on whether you have quad core CPU (Core i7 720/740QM) or you have any other Core i5 or Core i7 620/640 - the latter are two core CPUs and support 1066MHz RAM anyway.
That said you will probably end up with 1333MHz anyway as these are easier to buy.

    Hi guys
I'm in need of urgent help.

I recently decided to install win 8.1 on my Azer 5740 and when I was finally just doing that now on the "where do you want to install windows" page. It's not allowing me to pick the hard drive I want and gives me the error "we couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one" I have 2 hdds on my PC (one standard hdd that came with the notebook and one sdd I installed by removing the CD-ROM drive)

I have not really been able to understand the problem but it seems like the second hdd might be causing the problem. I want to install windows on the sdd. And the actual problem is that I previously had windows installed on the sdd and to install windows 8.1 I formatted the sdd so I don't have access to windows again. I tried searching the problem but couldn't find an answer. Have any of you encountered this problem before? Sorry that the pic is in German. image.jpg

Don't really understand your problem but you have to set the drive in the BIOS-setup (F2 when booting) where you want to boot from. (SSD first)
Your maybe have to partitioned and formatted the HDD becourse you don't want it to be the primary partition, not shure if two primary drive's are allowed, if you want to swap between 2
    Windows versions

Not shure if you must have the newest V1.28 BIOS for it, to have two drive's in it.

U have to be on the latest bios as said before me. I suggest u to take the ssd to the laptop and the hdd go to caddy instead of cdrom. If u cant install win8, try a different version of win8. Worked for me. Hope u will success :)

Hi all -- I got hit with a virus and had to restore to Factory Settings.
The computer is now fast once again...except for internet. No matter what browser I use, I seem to have problems.
In trying to diagnose this, I learned that my BIOS is at v.1.09 from 2009 and I see that the most recent BIOS is 1.28. Should I update? And do any of you have a guide for how to do so since I don't want to brick my computer?
What else should I check to try to figure out why browsers are so slow?

Make sure that network device you are using has the most recent driver - it probably doesn't if it's the one from the recovery image.

As for the BIOS - at least 1.16 is recommended because of battery but after so many years you might leave it as it is with 1.09.

    Hey guys
Thanks for the info. I think I solved my problem. Not exactly sure how I did it but I read on some forum that if you remove the usb on that screen hit refresh and plug it back in it helps and I did that which somehow worked :) so if anyone comes across this problem they should try that :)

Well, I just bought a 8800mAh,11.1V battery and am very pleased.

How often is it wise to let the power run out and to what minimum percentage?

@blitz123 It makes sense, most of it at least - I see no reason why you wouldn't remove the battery while it's charging. It's not like it can damage it.
Also there is no way you discharge battery to 2% level - there is a limit introduced by Acer in BIOS 1.16 to prevent battery being discharged past certain level since it can damage Li-ion cells.
All in all it's in line with what I would recommend (apart from unfortunate use of word "recycling" but it's easy enough to understand what they meant)

Well I have discharged it once to about 8% when it was giving warnings about going into hibernation whether I like it or not.

Interestingly, now I have fully charged again it says 99% is available when before it was 100% !

    Thanks for your help.

I like to say something about upgrading this laptop, according to the last several post's about it.
Im agree that the best noticeable upgrade's in normal day use are SSD and double battery capacity.

But if your goal is to get the last bit of performance out of it, then you have to look closely
to all the aspect's of it, cpu and ram speeds, if you going to quadcore, then also take at least
ramspeed of 1333Mhz or even greater, if you maybe want to do some o.c. in the future.
Maybe you have to look for the best SSD, even if we are limited to sata2.
Of cource you have to keep an eye at the best price/performance, but sometimes
even faster is not always more expensive.

    Hello,

    I own a 5740G 5340 / Model MS2286.

I'm trying to research what ram is compatible so I can upgrade.

I tried the crucial website that showed compatible ram and the specs. I bought Kingston with the same specs that crucial recommended and kept getting the blue screen / restart.

    Checking my ram inside the laptop it has: 2x 2GB Hynix 2Rx8 PC3 - 8500S - 7 - 10 - FS. HMT125S6BFR8C - G7 NO AA - C.

If anyone can help be much appreciated.

I'm got a Kingston SSD inside and can't believe how quick the system loads now. Just need some more ram!

    Cheers

Typically any DDR3 1066MHz RAM should work. 1333MHz DDR3 will work too. More recent and faster DDR3 sticks might not work though as we've seen some problems with those. What was the RAM you bought that did not work?

I had troubles with 4GB RAM Kingston too, despite my laptop is originally with Kingston.
But I found one piece 4GB PC3-10600 SODIMM 1333 SAMSUNG 4GB M471B5273DH0-CH9 and perfectly working. Looking for another one...

Have you tried any Mac memory from Corsair? Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 SO-DIMM Notebook RAM For Mac- CMSA8GX3M2A1066C7. Just curious is this might work.

Thanks for sharing the samsung memory. I'm going to have a look too.

Hi guys. I was wondering what model wifi card can install on my 5740G. I want it to be a dual band (2.4 Ghz and 5 Ghz). Can install wifi card on the free slot between HDD and the Optical drive ? What interface is this ? Thanks

Antenna cables won't reach that far so you'd have to replace them too. The port in question is mini PCI Express too so it would work although the Wi-Fi on/off button would not.

As for the card, the cheap & good solution is an Intel 6200 or if you are looking to upgrade to 802.11ac standard in near future - go straight for an Intel 7260.

    Compatible ram sticks.

    Samsung M471B1G73QH0-YK0 marked as Dell 8Gb SO-DIMM (SNPN2M64C/8G) 8GB PC3L-12800
couple of them works fine with i7-720qm.

    In regards of temps.
Atm 58C, highest ever recorded by MSI Afterburner was 96C after couple hours of Prime95 in loop with over clocked R5470 @920/1050.
Heatsink was "lapped" and I use Coolermaster E1 thermal compound.
