    Hi guys,

Can you tell me is there a difference between Samsung 4GB DDR3-1333 M471B5273CH0-CH9 and
    M471B5273DH0-CH9?
    Will be compatible?

Hi guys im hoping i can get some assistance in getting this laptop back up and running..

It all started with heat issues so i cleaned it up and replaced the thermal paste, still generating too much heat and a little research suggests the bios update could help it.

So i proceeded to download and flash acer aspire 5740G bios version 1.28, using the dreaded winphlash ( i know stupid mistake, whats worse its not the first time ive made it).

after it flashed and rebooted "black screen" and spent the better half of 8 hours researching and trying to fix.

    Acer Aspire 5740G
    Intel i5 430m
    radeon 5470
    4gb RAM
    500GB HDD
    Windows 7 64bit
    SNID: 00111404720

    Tried:

    BIOS_Acer_1.10_A_A
    BIOS_Acer_1.16_A_A
    BIOS_Acer_1.22_A_A
    BIOS_Acer_1.28_A_A

Used mulltiple different version of Phlash
Used different version of Crisis disk
Used an 8GB pen drive, 450MB pen drive and a 64MB SDcard.. oh and burning to CD + DVD

    Tried under windows XP x86, Win7 x64

    Tried FN+ESC / FN+B / WINKEY+ B / FN+F / CTRL+ESC
Tried With battery in and without
Tried using .WPH + .ROM and tried renaming and copying to root

Couldnt figure the Phoenix tool to tell me what to name it properly

The Bios was originally on 1.09 (can't seem to locate that anywhere)

Wish i could give more information but i dont have a clue what MOBO it is and not even 100% sure it phoenix having said that i also tried Insyde.

NONE of the above have even hinted at the Pen drive light flashing and the cdrom spins for 5 seconds. I dont think its the bios or phlash version i going to hazard a guess its not recognizing the USB either because the bios name is incorrect or its not applying it as a boot device.

Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated

**Edit 1** Tried Multiple different versions of PHLASH and Crisis :(

    Thanks

    Alan

Did you try the ready to use recovery disks or did you make them yourself?
I can upload a recovery disk that is confirmed to have worked (but to be honest it did not help the last user that tried)

    cheers and just to confirm
i should put it on a 500mb flash drive formatted in FAT, into left side USB
leave battery and and power in, hold FN+ESC press power button and wait for flash drive to light up?

Before doing this, prepare a Crisis Disk (refer to the “Steps for Creating the Crisis Disk in Windows XP/Vista” section below) and keep it ready in hand. Follow these steps for BIOS recovery:
    1. Power off the system.
    2. Connect a removable USB storage device containing the Crisis Disk to a USB port connected to the BIOS flash failed system.
    3. Under power-off state, press and hold Fn+Esc and then press the power button. The system should be powered on with the Crisis BIOS Recovery process.
    4. BIOS Boot Block starts to restore the BIOS code from the Crisis Disk to BIOS ROM on the failed system.
    5. After the crisis flashing process is finished, the system will restart.

basically info above is from Acer aspire 5740 manual

I think it was supposed to be formatted in FAT32 and it was imperative that the crisis disk was created on a 32bit OS.

The flash drive has to be less than 2GB in size and definitely in FAT32 (I verified that since my last post)

Nope - it should be flashing and even if it wasn't for whatever reason it should be over in like 2 minutes and the system should reboot.
So it's probably not working after all. Try other USB ports and other USB drives - of the ones you have only one meets the requirements, maybe it just isn't recognized for some reason.

Hi. For the past few days, my laptop powers up but no display on screen. When I connect to external display using VGA or HDMI, I see strange screen artifacts like bars and little strange dots. It then BSODs after a few minutes or seconds saying atikmdag.sys error. The computer boots up fine in Safe Mode but the artifacts remain. Is the GPU dying? Is there anything I can do like clean up laptop to prevent over heating?

@akafreak It does seem like the GPU is on its last legs indeed. Nothing you can do about it.

@don1bong You should look at buying a BIOS chip and having it programmed with 5740G BIOS (usually the seller can do it) and then either de-soldiering an old one and soldiering a new one yourself or having a local service center do it for you.

ok i pressed buttons in a different combo now and have different results
FN+ESC+Power (held) then plug in AC power results in the Power light blinking constantly every second.
I read somewhere that if i press power after that it reads from USB but still no USB activity light :(

Hi there. Hope someone can help me because I'm getting desperate. Didn't know where to post this, as the 5740G Owners' Lounge has no separate sections and more than 567 pages containing different threads (with no specific search function).

I've had an Aspire 5740G for several years now and have always been very pleased with it. However I've lately been experiencing Blue Screens of Death that mention ATIKMPAG.SYS, so my video driver. On top of this, after installing the latest Windows (7) Updates, my screen resolution changes, and the only way to get things back to normal is to do a system restore. I've had to do this 5 or 6 times!!

What video drivers are the rest of you guys using? At the moment I have an AMD Mobility Radeon HD 5000 Series drive, version 14.501.1003.0 dated 20/11/2014. When I try to update this, or when I install an HD5650 graphics driver (which should be the default one), either the computer crashes, my screen resolution changes (the same as that used in a Safe Mode reboot), or else I cannot open any video files.

For the moment, I have blocked all Windows Updates, as if I allow them to install, then my screen resolution goes crazy. I'm sure that if I can just get the right video driver installed then all my problems will be solved.

    @don1bong

Maybe your cmos is corrupted in the process of updating.,
Remove power, laptopbattery and cmosbattery, short circuit cmosbatteryholder for a few seconds and power up again.

    @Florio

Used the same with HD 5470, no problems, don't use drivers for desktop GPU.

With one core under load you can get TurboBoost up to 3.6GHz, with two cores up to 2.8GHz and with three or four only to 2.0GHz.

No, with full load you still should be able to get 2.0GHz. Since your full CPU speed without TurboBoost is 1.73GHz, if you are looking at 1.2GHz you mat be looking at thermal throttling. Check the temperature under load.

    Hello everyone,
I have problem with my cooling fan. It is deaktivated most of the time and only starts working for short periods of time when temps are getting very high (~90°C). So I decided to change from auto fan-control to manual using the program RW-Everything as described in this forum. Temps are fine now but it is realy annoying I have to load the settings over and over again after every reboot. Is there a way to save the settings so they survive a reboot? If anyone knows of a more convenient method that would be great too.

My cpu is an I5- 430M and GPU HD5650. When i bought it temps were really good and it was quiet on top. But since mb 2 years it got so hot on left top and bottom side you could almost burn your hand. I even took it apart and remove all dust and put on new thermal paste. didnt help. Only thing that is helping is to run fan all the time.

Remove heatsink, remove fan. Clean heatsink using thinner based degreaser ( or something similar).
You can try "lapping" that's what I have done.
Apply new thermal paste but don't forget clean cpu and gpu.
I have change my cpu to i7-720qm which generate nearly 2times more heat. My highest ever temp was 97C. But I have make it that way. Block wents :)
What I see fan works more depending on cpu load than temp. I have seen that fan try to lift off while cpu was 62 gpu was 59 and been idle while cpu was 82.

I already did all that cleaning heatsink and cpu + gpu with cleaning alcohol and applying new thermal paste. Removed all the dust as well in the cooling fins and fan. Im still far off from the original coolingcapacity my 5740g once had but it is usable again if i enbale fan all the time at lowest speed. Just to me it is very weird that i cant get cooling system to work like it did before. I run win8.1 and let windows install all the drivers except gpu. There shouldnt be a connection to heat problems though. Was hoping cleaning the notebook would have a more positive effect on temps.

I have an idea about this problem.Go to your Power Options, click Change Plan Settings on the right next to your currently active power plan, then click Change Advanced Power Settings. In that window scroll down to Processor Power Management and expand it then expand System Cooling Policy and check if it is set to Passive or Active.
I never really tested it how it works, but in Passive mode the fan is supposed to start spinning faster only when temps get really high and the CPU throttles down.
Try changing it to Active mode.

Actually I have always active mode. Colling policy inside bios regulate fan speed depending on cpu load. Maybe not easiest way. During winter go outside ( @Low ambient temp) or close to air con. Try to load cpu Prime95 for example and monitor temp. Before cpu temp will rise fan will be at full blast. On higher ambient temp block wents and see how temp rise while fan off @ no load.

Already tried that and on active fan still only spins on very high tempes. Auto mode just doesnt seem to work very well for me so I have no choice but to use manual. Laptop reaches 80-90°C already in idle (Office/browsing) if fan is deactivated.

I just ran a few benchmarks:

    3DMark06 (Fan on High): CPU 68°C / GPU 63°C
    Prime95 (Fan on High): CPU 73°C / GPU 55°C
    Prime95 (Fan on Low): CPU 83°C / GPU 63°C
    Browsing/Office (Fan on Low): CPU 43°C / GPU 45°C

Temps messured with HWinfo64 with roomtemp around 25-26°C

fan didnt give me any reason to think it is malfuntioning. It is blowing out heat in the back just fine I think but mb it's worth a try.

I also talked to friend of mine who is still using the 5738G which has the same body. He said cpu and gpu on his machine are around 35-40 in low usage too but his hdd is 55-60°C. Guess those are just problems that are coming from old age and are not easy to be fixed.

If you feel like an experiment you might want to check what the fan voltage pin is giving and try to hardwire the fan (probably buy a second one for that) to something else - USB port or something else in the vicinity so the fan would spin up at set rpm every time the power is on.
This might require some fiddling about to get the right voltage since I assume that is how rpm is being changed on the fan. So it's not enough to get it spinning, you might need to figure out roughly what voltage gives you enough rpm to cool the notebook in all situations but at the same time won't be too loud.

I believe that on this machine MB control fan in pre set power modes ( different voltage on fan ) but dont read fans speed that's why none of programs is able to read it.
If fan will be not functioning correctly guessing 6 volts 800rpm instead of 1200rpm ( worn bearing causing more friction ) my cause it.

So I decided to give a new fan a try. There are a lot of different ones all claiming to be originals for 5740g.

    http://www.ebay.de/itm/Acer-Aspire-...47?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item27fbfca613

    http://www.ebay.de/itm/Acer-Aspire-...11?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item27f4bccab7

    http://www.ebay.de/itm/Acer-Aspire-...83?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_77&hash=item27fbfe7647

They all have little different specs (Voltage/Output/Ampere) and also some come with 3Pin and other with 4Pin. Anyone got by any chance some experience with changing fan on our laptop and can give me some advice which one to get?

Or consult a service manual. There are only two fans for this notebook and part numbers and models are in the service manuals.

The the original one I have is the SUNON MagLev with 0.7W. Is there any point in getting the 1.08W Version of that fan or best get same as original?

Also might damaged Heat sink/pipes be likely? Is there a way to test if they still work as they are supposed to?

I believe that with damaged heat pipe it will over heat like hell and you will get nearly constant thermal throttling.

fan didnt give me any reason to think it is malfuntioning.

Looking at the schematics the fan has a tacho that's being reading by U15 (NPCE781BA0DX)
so its possible that your fan is blowing oke but tacho is broken,
buying a new one could do the trick.
abzjji temps are fine but fan kicks in too late.
Buy 4pins original, fan is 5 Volt PWM reg. , buying heavier one take's more current from U15.
Other possibilities are Q15 (dual channel mosfet 2N7002KDW) or diode D18 is bad
so U15 have no correct temps or tachospeed to read.

    Hi!

Yesterday I got my new internet connection installed, it's optical fiber at 300Mbps. I'm not getting more than 100Mbps and according to some tutorials, I'm supposed to set "1Gb" in the Properties table of the ethernet card, on "Speed and duplex". On the dropdown menu there is no such option. I'm running on Microsoft drivers for Win 8.1, maybe a dedicated driver could fix this?

I will dig out my one later on. Other thing is how you connect to your router?

    @SSM

You can never choose 1Gbps from the menu - this speed should be negotiated automatically and other two are available in case you need to force lower speed for some reason.
To what is your device connected exactly? Switch? Router? What model?

Have you tested a different cable - you need at least Cat 5E.

Cat5e ethernet cable. Less than 1 meter long.

Hi. I don't now if you say "never" referring to this laptop or in general. I didn't know about any of this until I found this generic tutorial (it's in spanish but spot the 1,0 Gbps in the dropdown menu):

I don't have that and the cable I'm using is Cat5e. I'm going to check the specification of the ethernet card, just in case.

Well I meant "never" in general - this option should not be available and I have never seen it available. Anyway - don't look for it on 5740(G) - it's not supposed to be there. The cable type is OK but test a different cable to be sure.

May I ask once again what is on the other side? A router, switch - what type and model?
